Steak burrito

Got the steak burrito there definitely plenty in this thing next time I'll skip the rice

Pastor on the left, and Asada on right. Order arrachera not Asada.
Jose C.

I was actually very unimpressed the first time I came. Although the price per taco is very cheap compared to everyone else in the city, I still felt cheated. @ $1.50 a taco, I ordered 2 tacos de al pastor and 2 de Asada. The al pastor tasted somewhat decent. Not the greatest in the world. But probably wouldn't order them again. However the tacos de Asada were the biggest disappointment. After watching the episode on Chicago's Best, the "Carne Asada" tacos were made from arrachera (skirt steak). They definitely weren't. They were made out of just cheap taco meat. Nonetheless, I was let down by this place. Huge disappointment! I returned a few days later, and I asked if they had arrachera tacos. They did! And they came with some very tasty hand made tortillas. There meat was perfectly grilled, with delicious flavors. This will probably be the only place I check out whenever I'm in Waukegan, but I'm glad I decided to give this place a second chance.

Red tamales! A little salty for me but delicious! 12 for $9

I stopped by early Saturday morning and got a pack of their freshly made tamales. I wasn't disappointed at all. Not sure how bad they used to be (according to the two reviews on here) but the ones I got was pretty good! they usually sell out towards noon. These were not as spicy as the others that I have had before from diff places. It's just a tad bit on the salty side for me, other than that, it was fresh, hot and well cooked. A LOT better than the ones they sell at Lewis fresh.

the miniscule tamales. My hand on the left, my 7-year old's hand on the right.

Gonzalez is a clean business. Always picked up and orderly. No gross stuff behind the deli counter. However, their cashiers could limit themselves to ringing up customers' orders instead of sharing their personal stories across the aisle. Please. But let me get to why I felt inclined to Yelp my review for this establishment: Prepared food complaint/review: My mom was there today and picked up some of their tamales and flautas to bring to my house today. Boy was I disappointed! Let me start with the flautas: They were dry, overcooked and bland. Enough said. But the tamales were just a joke: Flavor was "ok", but it's the size of the tamal that took the prize. In my mom's words: "They're the size of stuffed ravioli!" Seriously, the people they have making the tamales should at least make the effort to make them appear a little bigger. They're not cheap. $14 a dozen! So, if you're gonna charge more than a $1 for a tamal, make it worth the price. Just saying. So, my mom is not buying flautas or tamales again. There's no shortage of places selling tamales in Waukegan, so we'll be fine, but man, how disappointing. I didn't expect this from Gonzalez.

Not to mention their in-house eatery located at the back of the store has mouthwatering Mexican-style chicken tacos for $2.00 each. I do not live close to Lewis Fresh Market but whenever I am visiting my family, I'll stop by for the chicken tacos and to pick up great deals on meat to freeze and fresh veggies for my home. It's well worth it. I also can attest that the staff are all wearing masks and those behind the counter are wearing gloves. Those at the registers are not wearing gloves, but I also appreciated that at the eatery bottles of disinfectant and paper towels were placed on each table for unlimited use. If you are in the Lake County area, it's a truly great place to shop and eat!

Lewis Fresh Market certainly isn't one of those cramped little stores. Has a lot of produce and other items. The prices aren't the best but they're pretty comparable to other places. Best thing is the produce because it's all fresh. It's comparable to the Cermak Fresh Markets. There's a lot of Mexican and other Latino stuff in here along with some other countries too. Has quite a lot to go through so you can find many good items. There's a grill to order tacos and tortas. Also there's a hot bar and salad bar. Other popular areas include the bakery where they cut fresh loaves. Has even more produce outside, especially when they have pumpkins in autumn. The prices are okay for being fresh. For sure we could go here again if in the area. It's got a couple locations, including this one on Grand. The produce is considered to be the best stuff.

I just wish it would!!!! Originally written on 11/30/2012 but just noticed it was posted on the wrong Jewel site (Lewis) when it should have been posted on the Green Bay Jewel's site. I have been shopping here for years and agree that corporate must be ignoring this store because they never have enough staff. They are usually running on self-checkout lanes only that get frequent errors and take forever to get through the check-out process. The only employee who seems to be helpful besides the one with a hearing impairment is a tall black guy. And he can barely be helpful because he is usually playing the role of overseeing all of the self check-out lanes, customer service and supervisor. The store is pretty crowded at night so I am not sure why anyone in their right mind would ever think one staff person is enough. A few months ago, my boyfriend was waiting at the customer service desk for quite some time to get a rain check and when he finally saw an employee walking by and ignoring him, he asked he if she could help him. She said in a rude tone, "What do you want? I'm on break!" After he told her he wanted nothing from her but her manager, she stormed out of the store. Two nights ago, I was there with my daughter and she was laughing uncontrollably at the fact that every aisle had items out of place. On top of that, we couldn't even buy any fruit because it all looked horrible. The bread aisle had a banana peel of an eaten banana that was black (meaning it had been there for a while). The other aisles had perishable goods in them that were not even cold anymore. The perishable aisles had not perishable items tossed everywhere. And when I went to checkout (at self check-out, of course) there was a basket of food sitting there with a floppy frozen pizza that was no longer frozen. At this point, I sent my daughter to tell the employee there were items left at the checkout. She retrieved them and put them in the restock-perishable basket, not the basket they use when things are damaged or need to be discarded. At this point, I was livid. I saw an employee in a white shirt walk up to the customer service desk and asked if he was the manager. He said yes and I told him that I have been coming to the store for years and it is disgusting. There are items everywhere in the aisles and then I picked the pizza up and asked if if he would eat it and told him they are going to make someone sick. He told me he can't control what the customers do. I told him he can control what his employees do. He then looked around and asked if I saw anyone just standing around to which I responded that they have had a staffing problem for years. He then snatched the pizza out of my hand and threw the it back in the pershable bin telling me they aren't putting it back on the shelf. I told him that if that was true, he would have placed it in the other bin and not to lie to me and walked away. I did happen to ask the cashier on the way out for his name. It's Mike. I will be sending this same review to corporate, but doubt it will matter. It's a shame to see that the Jewel in Waukegan is run so poorly and in such disrepair, but the one in Gurnee is fully staffed and remodeled and is never half as full as the Waukegan location. I guess they don't care about the Waukegan area as much as the Gurnee one and I guess I will be a new customer of the Gurnee location but will more likely drive the extra distance to Dominick's to avoid them all together. EDIT: So I googled Jewel so I could file the compaint and an aticle about their stock dropping and them trying to sell because of the underperformed their competitors like Dominicks. DUHHHHH!!!! In 2008 their stock was worth over $40, not it's down to $2. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-jewel-parent-company-in-sales-talks-20121129,0,2407609.story

It may be most notable for the popular butcher section but there's also produce. Has cheap prices on many items. They prefer cash so bring some of that. A small store but it has a lot. It's not as much to choose from as the big chain groceries but there's quite a few finds. The most popular part is the butcher to get fresh meats. Basically that's the area at the entrance. If you prefer things not from animals there's plenty more in the store. Has alcohol. Last time I found a can of Crazy Cowboy for $1.99, and there's other cheap beers too. As for the produce it's not great but it's cheap. It's about $2 to get a few oranges. A few other good things in here. They only have a couple checkout aisles, and they prefer cash but that's not required. For sure it's an important local business. It's a lot better than going to some corporate chain. They're closed Sundays.

Basically no Asian grocery store can possibly be 5 stars, but for the fact that it is located in Mundelein and has most of your basic Asian grocery needs, it deserves 4. They pretty much carry everything that you can find in Chinatown or Little Vietnam in Argyle, without you actually having to go into Chicago and have to deal with parking and rude drivers. Basically the only reason why this place is here is convenience. I am actually very surprised to discover this place, this place has genuine Chinese grocery. Whereas places in Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights predominantly caters to Japanese or Korean preferences. You will hear Mandarin music playing in this store. Most items here are a tad more expensive than you would find in Chicago, because they added the few extra 50 cent or so in there to transport the food up to you from downtown. Certain items the price remains consistent with downtown. Didn't find anything expired, but did find some stuff close to being expired. I was surprised they even sell Chinese bakery goods and roast duck and chicken here. Also has live fish. Which, I am not purchasing because I feel terrible for the fish.
