As far as Asian themed stores, this place doesn't necessarily stand out above the others. It's pretty undersized, really has no aesthetic draw in its storefront, and is located in a plaza that looks like the setting of a post-apocalyptic flick. BUT what it does have going for it that no other Asian mart has is . . . well . . . there aren't really any other Asian marts around . . . The main draw this mart has for me is the convenience (location-wise). It has all your main Asian staples, snacks, sides, and condiments. Due to the relatively small space, your options are a tad bit limited but for the aforementioned groups, there is a significant and satisfying selection whether you need some hoisin sauce, some pocky sticks, or some canned eel. However, the produce section is obviously lacking. Aside from some main players like bok choy and Chinese spinach, you're not going to find a whole lot of variation. There is also a meat section that even has live fish that they'll filet for you, which caught me by surprise; who would've thought such a small operation would have the financial capital to keep live fish around? Which begs the question . . . how old are those fish? Aside from some food, they do have a small section dedicated to Chinese kung fu and dramas. This really isn't my alley but if you're in the mood for some Chinese entertainment, I guess you could check it out? It seems like they got a nice sampling although a lot of the DVDs are in those plastic folders which are all heavily stuffed into this shelf. I suppose the Chinese entertainment portion of their business is seeing some hard times... I guess the bottom line is that there's nothing special but nothing bad. It's a fairly solid place to find and fulfill your Asian needs in an area where that kind of fulfillment can be a hard acquisition. Like I said, it doesn't really stand out in terms of its storefront presentation so it may be hard to find but if you're turning into a small little plaza area and your first thought it, "Jeez . . . I hope a zombie doesn't pop out all of a sudden", you're probably in the right place.

Asian focused grocery. Small but well stocked, friendly service, and convenient for everyone.

I'm not sure if there's other international markets in this area that are really anywhere near as large (super huge stores like H-Mart, Assi, Seafood City, etc. are quite far from Mundelein). This store is truly impressive in the amount of options offered from hot food to produce to dried foods to foods from other local shops. Due to the size of the store, there is considerably more room to walk around and check out products here even where they're busy -- similar to the experience you'd get a Woodman's. The amount of decorations and displays is definitely much better here than most other grocery stores, rivaling Mariano's in terms of presentation. Prices are fair here, particularly for the international items which are competitively priced here compared to non-specialty stores. The produce is fresh and plentiful, with options for more unusual fruits and vegetables as well. At the end of the store, there's also a spot for dining and a few small shops. Overall worth a trip if you're looking for a one-stop-shop for all your grocery needs. This provides a comprehensive and enjoyable shopping expereince.

Surprise place for great counter dine-in or to-go food! I…read morewas browsing in the grocery store and found the taqueria in the back, along with a nice separated dining area. The food smelled so good I ordered a taco al pastor "con todo" (bbq pork with sauce, onions and cilantro) to go. When I got home and opened it I was amazed to find the best bbq pork taco I think I've ever had. It came with a free good sized add-on of delicious roasted green onions and little red peppers. The taco was quite large and had the promised finely chopped onions and cilantro and I believe some cooked chopped mango as well. It was pretty greasy, but it was incredibly good. I went back with a friend and got a repeat of the taco as well as their basic cheese quesadilla, adding sour cream to it. Again, delicious, filling, and extremely reasonable pricing. Service was quick and very friendly to this aging gringa. I'll be back to try other dishes but it'll be hard to not select the el pastor over and over. There is also a mini-Mexican bread/sweet roll bakery right next to the dining area. Good results from the selection I took home from there also.
