Mariakirken, or St. Mary's Church, was on the way to our next activity in Bergen and I could not help myself but to stop by. I'm a church addict and love the architecture and historical significance of them. I can't resist visiting them, especially if they are old and ornate. It didn't hurt that this church also has a very interesting cemetery on it's grounds. To be quite honest, the cemetery is what drew me in first.
There is a small fee you have to pay to be able to see inside of the church. To be perfectly honest, this put me off a little bit at first, but it was less than $10 and I told myself that it's to keep this beautiful place alive and well.
If you don't want to go inside to see the lovely stained glass or the ornate altarpiece in the chancel or some of the interesting icons, that's ok. The beautiful outside, with the ornate iron work on the wooden doors and the super shiny blue, almost black, shingles will quench your church thirst. Or at least it did mine. read more
