A very large…read morechurch The St John's Church in Bergen was constructed between1891 and 1894 and is a massive structure that towers over 200 feet high and holds over 1,200 people. It's the largest church in Bergen and like many churches in Norway is Evangelical Lutheran. St John's was built in the Gothic Revival style and was designed by the architects Adolf Fischer and Hans Heinrich Jess. It is renowned for it's huge and powerful organ and recitals are held throughout the year. Although we couldn't get inside just walking around this impressive edifice was indeed awe inspiring. Although not as old as many of the other historic churches and buildings in Norway the St John's Church is well worth the effort to find and explore while in Bergen.

It is a stunning building inside and out with lovely stained glass windows and a pair of winding staircases. There are pamphlets near the door with a bit more information regarding the history of this beautiful church through the ages, what to see in side, and what to check out in the churchyard (I'll give you a hint: you mostly look at graves).

The original church was located elsewhere and built about 1200, it was moved in 1883 and suffered a fire in 1992, thus what you see in newly reconstructed in the same form as the original. Check out the small door to the left of the alter where persons with leprosy could receive blessings. Also the dragon carvings are meant to ward off evil spirits.
