The worst dental practice I have ever encountered. I would give a 0/5 if I could…read more My son saw Dr. Haleh Azar for orthodontic care. My husband and I both had dental insurance through our employers, and I paid the full amount upfront. Dr. Azar was supposed to reimburse us for any extra payments she received from our insurance companies, but she never did. She refused to provide a statement of our account balance, so I had to contact both insurance companies myself to find out how much she had been paid. That's when I discovered that Dr. Azar's office had kept $1,177 that should have been returned to us. Even after I went to her office numerous times, presented proof, and requested a refund, she refused. I eventually reported the situation to the Massachusetts Dental Society and the Boston District Dental Society. Only after Dr. Azar received a letter from one of these organizations did the office finally return the money. Beyond this serious issue with handling our funds, I have not even gone into detail about the poor quality of service. The fees she charged were already much higher than the standard rates in our area.

I specifically booked here because they supposedly take my insurance, only to be told after my appointment that the dentist I saw was out of network. Apparently, unless you explicitly tell them you want an in-network dentist, they'll randomly assign you to one who is out of network. That is absolutely ridiculous. Who in their right mind would choose to pay more if they didn't have to? It was illogical, misleading, and honestly felt like a trap in their system. The front desk tried to claim they "called me to double check" because I booked online, but I never received a call. Either they didn't call, or they're not verifying numbers correctly so they definitely are not organized. I walked in expecting a normal dental visit covered by my insurance. I walked out with an unexpected bill. Update: They said they would call me back to let me know the updated bill with the insurance, but never did. It is a shame because their office workers all seem nice, and their presence really shapes the initial and final dentist experience.

I will never return to Brookline Dental Specialists -- and here's why…read more My son was a patient of Dr. Mary Ghattas, and our experience was full of repeated cancellations, disrespect, and a disturbing lack of professionalism. At first, I tried to give the benefit of the doubt -- but it became clear over time that I was not being treated with the same respect as other parents. And I believe that had a lot to do with how I look and who I am. From the very beginning, Dr. Ghattas would look me up and down, often with a smirk. At first, I brushed it off. But as the appointments went on, her behavior made it clear -- she didn't respect me. Whether it was my size, my ethnicity, or simply because I spoke up, I don't know. But what I do know is this: she treated me like I didn't deserve basic courtesy. The turning point came when she scheduled my son for dental surgery and then canceled the appointment without ever notifying me. I woke up early, paid $60 roundtrip in Uber costs, and only found out during my travel that the procedure had been canceled -- without a single phone call, message, or apology. This wasn't a cleaning. It was surgery. When I brought this up to her calmly during a follow-up visit, she cut me off and spoke to me in a sharp, condescending tone. When I explained how I wasted money and time because no one told me the surgery was canceled, she didn't apologize -- instead, she shifted blame onto me and questioned whether I had even taken my son to a previous appointment (which I had). She literally said, "Well, I don't even know if you sent him where I told you to." That was the moment I said, "If you need answers, look in his mouth. The answers are right there." That's when everything changed. She was visibly embarrassed -- and from that day forward, she began canceling every appointment we made. Three times in a row, she called on the day of or the day before and canceled. No explanation. No reschedule. Just cancellations, again and again. So I did what she had done to me: I scheduled one final appointment and waited until ten minutes before the time to call and cancel. I calmly told the receptionist that we would not be returning and that I need a provider who respects me as my son's guardian -- not one who punishes me for standing up for myself. There was no apology. No supervisor follow-up, even though one was promised. Just silence. And that silence speaks volumes. Let me be clear: I did nothing wrong. I advocated for my child. I handled paperwork, guardianship, appointments, and care on my own. I did it all without yelling, without being rude, and without ever skipping a step. What I received in return was humiliation, gaslighting, and targeted retaliation. If you are a parent, a guardian, or someone who expects to be treated with dignity -- please think twice before trusting this practice. I will never let anyone put their hands in my child's mouth again if they can't even speak to me with basic respect.

She also recommended for my teeth **waxed nylon floss** because it is tough enough to not shred on my dental work, and she gave me a sample to try out at home. Karine and Dr Han were wonderfully attentive to answering all my questions--even suggesting as a gift for my niece and nephew (who I fear will run into big problems with their teeth in years to come, if they don't practice better dental hygiene: one still in college already has suffered a root canal) the third edition of "Case Studies In Dental Hygiene" (3rd Edition) by Evelyn M. Thomson, which Dr Han mentioned is as interesting/riveting as a mystery novel, offering clues that the reader has to interpret/diagnose...or else it was suggested that I could give my niece and nephew electric toothbrushes. I was especially relieved to learn that some tooth roots I had worried about are still ok--no root canal needed--despite some sensitivity to temperature that apparently is due to gum recession. In fact, the Colgate toothpaste for Sensitive teeth that Karine suggested I try has been working great: I felt no sensitivity to cold at Sahara when my teeth were specifically checked for sensitivity in a recent visit--and Sahara Dental very kindly did not charge me for that consultation. I also had the pleasure of using Sahara's restroom to brush my teeth before my appointment--right after the restroom had been cleaned: I have never seen a restroom so sparklingly BRIGHT!! My expectations for restroom cleanliness may be spoiled for life now that Sahara has raised the bar so much! I was totally surprised and delighted by all Sahara Dental's wonderful services this whole past month. Thank you again, Sahara Dental staff!
