Flags honor the nation's military branches. However, without adequate explanation about those branches the memorial could confuse some visitors about what organizations make up the US military.
For example, four brick columns in front recognize the US Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. There's no column for the US Coast Guard, which the government's website states is one of the nation's military forces. Behind the columns the Coast Guard is included among the black obelisks for each military service unit.
However, there's also an obelisk for the Merchant Marines, which a federal military website expressly says is not a US military branch, nor even a government agency. despite its having.
