I know everyone here raves about her, which is why I decided to give it a go, but, ultimately, I just couldn't justify the price for the experience. Don't get me wrong, Margaret was super sweet, and my haircut wasn't bad, but if I'm going to cough up $72 (with tip) for a haircut (I know, I know, it's hard to find anything under that these days...) then I want to be absolutely ecstatic about my hair (and my overall experience!), and, well, I wasn't. For getting your hair cut in someone's house, I don't see how one should be expected to pay salon prices. Your hair is rinsed in the kitchen sink. There's no store to pay rent on. No staff to hire. Shouldn't that make the prices a little more reasonable since it's going straight into her pocket? Also, I went in to get my pixie trimmed. I thought that would qualify as a man's cut (I mean, isn't it?) but, alas, I had to pay the "being a woman" tax (but that's a rant for another day...). It's definitely not the best cut I had, though, sure, it's not horrible. Again, Margaret was very nice and she does make her space welcoming and cozy. Ultimately, though, if I'm going to pay that much money, I want the full salon experience and not feel as though I've been jipped. read more

I had been thinking about going blonde for a while (I'm Asian with dark brown hair), and finally decided to do so. I have to admit I was really nervous going in, because my hair wasn't in the greatest shape. A year ago, at a different salon, I had a horrible experience that left me with a severe damage line. I really wanted to make the change to blonde, but realized that I'd have to be careful... This translated into me bombarding Margaret with a ton of questions and concerns. At the fancy, expensive salon that I used to go to in Manhattan, I'd sometimes feel like the stylists were snooty and didn't have the patience to answer all my questions. Margaret really took the time to talk me through all of them, being completely realistic and honest about everything from what would look good with my skin tone to how much damage I could expect if I went platinum and what measures I should take to keep my hair healthy. After talking to her and trying out a test strand, I finally decided to go an ashy/dirty blonde, which I'm so happy with. I'm excited that I got to make a dramatic change to my hair without damaging it irreparably, like the online accounts I'd read before. I love going to Margaret for a hair cut. Through college and a few years after I'd just hack my own hair off with scissors. After moving to NY I went through a year or two of going to Bumble model hair cuts, which worked fine for my budget of nothing at the time. Then I started to want more. I wanted to go to a stylist and get a cut that was for me. But, frankly, I felt intimidated to go to a "real" stylist. I didn't know what kind of haircut I wanted, I didn't know how to talk about hair, I didn't know how much I should plan on paying, after years of self and free haircuts I just felt intimidated. Then a friend recommended Margaret. Margaret is great. She doesn't care that I don't know how to talk about my hair, she never cuts it too short, and it ALWAYS looks good after. And it grows out well. And she is really nice. She doesn't overwhelm you with small talk, but when she does talk she has this cute semi-mid-western accent. And my hair looks good, even though I don't blow it out, or curl it, or hardly do anything with it, she just cuts it well. (I have shoulder-to-chin length, slightly wavy hair.) I went for a free Bumble haircut last year when Margaret hurt her hand and immediately regretted it. Margaret just does such a nice job. My boyfriend also gets his hair cut by Margaret. I just got my hair cut by Margaret for the first time yesterday, and I'm very happy with my decision. I explained my personal style goal ("I have no idea what I want, just make it look cool but not so trendy that it scares people") and Margaret gave me a cut I'm really happy with. I really liked that she wasn't in a rush and took her time. I've never gotten my hair cut in a residential setting before, but Margaret's apartment is beautifully decorated and I instantly forgot I was in an apartment. I love Margaret! And most importantly, I love what she does for my hair. When I cut about 8 inches into a bob that I didn't totally love for way too much money, I went to Margaret to improve my new short haircut and it looked way better for about half the price of the original look. I've been going to her religiously to get my hair done since. She has added subtle highlights, given me bangs that didn't suck to grow out, and now that I've grown the bob, has made my stick straight magically transform into a textured, subtly wavy mermaid-y hair cut. with basically no product required. As someone who has always been desperately jealous of girls with perfect wavy hair, I couldn't be happier with the result. Everyone compliments the cut and an acquaintance most recently made me stop so she could take pictures of my hair at all angles to see if her stylist could try to get the same result. My suggestion to her: just go see Margaret. PS You should know that her studio is in the 1st floor of her home. It's completely professionally set up, and you get the added benefit of a snack or a glass of wine, but it is not in an actual salon. Some may say she is expensive but it's high quality work with only thee but products being used on you hair. And that stuff is not cheap. I've known Margaret for a while now and just had my first haircut at her home studio in Bushwick. WOW. Seriously, I knew she'd be good but I didn't know HOW good! I've had my hair pixie-cut once before but didn't really like it the first time around. After about seven years I decided to try it again, and realized that last time I just didn't have a stylist who understood my straight, fine hair, much less what I wanted from my cut. I LOVE Margaret! The atmosphere is super calm, the colors of the room even make you feel like you are on a vacation. On to the hair: my hair looks awesome! I had a single process color treatment done, and it was quick, came out looking amazing. My old stylist would never run the color through early enough, leaving me with slightly ombre coloring, I told Margaret and she easily made sure it was perfect. Let me begin by saying I am from the midwest and not NYC, and my hairstylist has been cutting my, my mom and my sister's hair for the past twelve years. I have a very thick mane with enough hair for two people, and I really have to work to dry and flatiron it into the bob I prefer to sport. I love my longstanding hairstylist because she is beyond competent and cuts my hair with unrivaled precision. I just don't go home often enough to see her more than once or twice a year, if I'm lucky. Therein lies the problem: who can fill in the gaps? I actually got a haircut from Margaret when I first moved to the neighborhood in 2011. I wasn't blown away with the haircut because I had my expectations set to what I was used to with my regular stylist, so really, no matter who cut my hair I would have been very critical. Over the past couple years I went to different area salons (Mousey Brown, the Parlour, Roots Radicals) and only Mousey Brown I endured more than once. All really mediocre, in my opinion. So - not wanting to spend a fortune, I decided to give Margaret another try last month hoping she wouldn't remember me. She is a very sweet woman, although I would prefer a salon where I can zone out amidst more activity around me as opposed to being the only one besides her in the room! However, you take the good with the bad - she gave me a very, very good haircut! It is very hard for me to embrace another stylist and I was worried at first that it would be the "looks good after being styled by a professional but will crumble when I try to do it myself syndrome." It's a month later, and the ends look great and the shape is holding up very well. My friend was going blonde, so I went with her for moral support. After a long, in-depth consultation, Margaret convinced my friend to go a darker ashy blonde instead of the platinum she was originally planning - which she was totally right about. She also walked us through the entire process, telling my friend to take damage into consideration. She's one of the only stylists I've ever encountered who is totally honest about what's going to happen to your hair. After weighing her options, my friend got her hair bleached and dyed and it ended up looking fabulous and perfect on her skin tone. After seeing my friend get treated so well during her appointment, I wanted to get mine done too! Margaret did a color gloss which just took very little time AND she fixed my bangs for free. Finding Margaret Gere changed my life. Sweeping statement? Maybe, but hear me out: I have extremely thin, fine, straight hair. Look at it wrong and it tangles or breaks, and it gets oily fast. (Sounds great, right?) There's not much you can do with it. Most stylists have NO clue how to handle this kind of hair. "Put in lots of layers!" is the (incorrect) conventional wisdom for fine hair. Do that to me, and I will permanently look like a stringy mess who needs a shampoo. Also, my hair has to be handled gently, another thing some stylists don't understand. So for years, I was getting a dry cut with blunt ends from a lovely and very competent stylist. However, I don't live close by, and I was honestly getting tired of the same blunt cut over and over. Not her fault - change is scary, and I'm sure she would have tried something else if I'd asked. But I started looking online for someone a little closer to me and who maybe knew how to give some life to super-fine hair. Enter Margaret Gere. Saw all the glowing reviews on Yelp, and noticed one mentioned "this girl knows fine hair." Everyone's reviews here spoke to me. I dropped Margaret a note and explained my concerns. I feared she'd dismiss me since I sounded like a fussy nightmare client. Thankfully, she replied that she knew how to handle fine hair and could work with me. Hooray! I made the appointment and started getting more and more excited. What's the worst that could happen? It'd grow back and the not-close-by-stylist would always be there. Showed up to Margaret's and found her to be a lovely, sweet, personable gal situated in a super-clean, pleasant at-home salon. We chatted, and I told her I wanted to go much shorter and just have some life to my hair. I don't do blow dryers and heat styling (no need with straight hair, plus the damage-!) so it also had to look good showered and air dried. Snip, snip, snip, went my hair. About an hour later, she was done, and OH MY GOSH WHAT IS THIS DO I ACTUALLY LOVE MY HAIR?! It was cut beautifully, all the ends curving in this beautiful way that created fullness out of flatness. Normally I have to keep my hair parted to one side only, but this cut can go ANY direction and still look good. I can skip a day washing my hair and not look like a mess. Best of all, my hair is staying tangle-free and actually flatters my face. I don't have enough words to rave about this cut. Best of all, the price was extremely reasonable and Margaret was simply a joy. My hair is cute and I feel great. I will happily return to Margaret and am beyond overjoyed that I now have "fun" hair. And as any woman can tell you, liking your hair can be a huge life-changer.
