Impossible smash burger & fries
Vandana M.

All movies are $5 on Tuesdays! If you sign up to be a rewards member, there's major discounts on the popcorn bucket on Tuesdays. On Tuesdays you can also get a $1 bag of popcorn. I love the comfortable reclining seats. The theater has been playing a lot if Indian movies in various languages lately and I love it! The restaurant also has some good eats. I got the Impossible Smash burger today, it comes with lots of fries and ketchup. It was made fresh to order and tasted pretty good for $14! They also have impossible nuggets which also come with fries. The only thing I don't like is that a 1 L bottle of water costs $5, that's the most expensive water in all of Cedar Rapids.

Came in on a weekday for lunch. Not busy at all. Service was quick, took my food to the bar area. Excellent.

Social distanced seating

The movie is going to start soon so i may make this brief, reviewing the location, it was easy to find. The staff was kind to answer any questions i had, they have a variety of foods besides popcorn and the seating was beyond my expectations. I may go to another movie here in the future.

This place is awesome. It's a second run theater, so the prices are really low. The prices on the…read moreconcessions are also pretty low, which is a welcome relief from the insanely expensive concessions at the first run theaters in the area. They also do something crazy that I've never seen anywhere: they let you add butter to your own popcorn. They hand you your bucket, you carry it over to a dispenser, and you add as much or as little as you want. You can also pick between a low cholesterol "buttery topping" or actual butter (again, not something I've seen in a movie theater since I can remember). The theater is run (and probably owned) by a guy named Bruce who occasionally introduces the movies with a give-away thing where he hands out vouchers for free popcorn to randomly selected patrons. His little pre-movie presentation makes it obvious that he loves running the theater, which makes you feel good about supporting it. The final amazing thing is that they don't show you ads mixed in with the trailers. As of 2015, the first run theaters in the area have a bloated, 22-minute preview screening that includes ads that run before the trailers. Not here. They have a slide show with some ads going before the lights go down, but it's not like the Screenvision ads that play everywhere else. The downside is that these aren't huge, fancy theaters. No stadium seating, no massive screens, no crazy sound systems. Everything is totally acceptable, but it's not like going to a first run theater with a gigantic screen and really loud sound. They did upgrade to DLP digital projectors, and they installed new seats, so it's not like you'll be walking into some decrepit screening room. When you factor in the value, the projection and sound quality are great. You should be warned that bringing in outside food is strictly prohibited. It's not like a regular theater where you can basically sneak in anything you want. They have employees that walk through the movie periodically to make sure nobody has brought in anything. If this bugs you, get over it. You're paying almost half what you would at a first run theater, and you have the option to buy inexpensive concessions. Deal with it. Overall, this is an awesome place. Over the years, I've seen so many movies that I would have never seen otherwise. It's hardly worth taking a chance on a movie if you're going to pay $10 for a ticket and $20 for popcorn, but if you spend less than half that, you have the freedom to try movies that you're unsure about. It's a quality operation. Check it out. Become a regular. Keep cool theaters like this going.

When we suggested theatre camp to my 9 year old son and 10 year old step-daughter, they were both…read morescared of the idea of camp. When my son found out one of the camps was going to be focused on songs from Frozen, he was even less excited about the prospect. We ended up signing them up for Jurassic Park Improv, as well as the Into The Unknown camp that was focused on Frozen songs. By the end of the first day, my son was belting out Frozen songs on the car ride home. My step-daughter had to miss the first day, and came to the car virtually in tears after day two of Jurassic Park Improv, because she "didn't get a turn in the freeze game," which is a game that you actually put yourself into. So, your only obstacle to getting a turn is your own shyness. By the time we picked the kids up on day three, we couldn't even guess what they did, because they were both excitedly talking over each other a mile a minute. We stayed to watch the final day of Jurassic Park Improv, and attended the final performance of Into The Unknown. My step-daughter put herself into the freeze game so many times that day that we were worried the other kids would get mad at her, and my son enthusiastically sang and danced to Frozen songs with reckless abandon. We were thrilled with the growth that they both displayed over that week. Both camps had the same two counselors, although it seemed like Bree took the lead for Jurassic Park Improv and Katey took the lead for Into The Unknown. Both counselors were absolutely incredible. When I told my son I planned to contact Theatre Cedar Rapids to tell them Bree and Katey did a fantastic job, he gave me side eye, and said "fantastic" in an annoyed tone. Worrying that I had misjudged how much he liked the came, I asked him what was wrong with the word "fantastic," and he said "I would say super duper fantastic." He even thanked his step-mom unprompted for signing him up for the camps even though he hadn't wanted to go, because he had a lot of fun. He also told me "If Bree is doing a camp, you don't even have to say anymore. I know it'll be good." These two camps were an out of this world experience for our kids!

This is a hidden gem downtown. You literally could walk right by it and never know you had…read more FilmScene is a small, non-profit theater that lives in the pedmall. It shows over 300 feature films a year boasting a two-screen venue and a really cool rooftop. It's a small theater, for sure-- but with the Chauncy being built-- this is JUST the beginning. (I read over 200 seats, and three additional screens will live in the bottom two stories of the high-rise. I can't wait!) The movie going experience is exactly what you want it to be, but never really get anymore. Each theater is small with fabulous sound. There are small couches in the front row, and comfortable chairs in the back. The ads as you wait are silent and not at all gimmicky. All I could think was... the sense of community I felt as I watched. And that is rad. FilmScene boasts vegan popcorn, candy, hot drinks, soda, multiple local brews and wine. (With free refills on large popcorn and large sodas) Also, their membership programs look very reasonable. Between discounted ticket prices, discounter (or free) concessions and even 10% off at a handful of local restaurants. So much is done right. I'll leave you with this final amazing number. My family of four recently attended a kids movie. It was their first film of the day, sure-- but we bought two adult tickets, two kid tickets, a coffee, a large (refillable) popcorn and a water. We spent $21 total. Yes, you read that correctly-- with admission, we spent what you would on a bucket of popcorn at MOST theaters. All I know is, during the summer, their rooftop is open to enjoy a drink pre or post screening. And while I haven't done that, I will sooner than later AND YOU SHOULD TOO.

Having worked at movie…read moretheaters throughout college I can tell you that the pressure for the big movie theaters to play the biggest movies that will sell out or bring it the largest crowd is, is immense. Those theaters rarely take any kind of risk with a small movie that may or may not be the next Hollywood blockbuster. Honestly, they really are a blockbuster hit but are often really good movies that have a voice which should be heard. That is where Film Scene comes in. It fills the void created by monstrous movie theaters which are more concerned with the quality of their heated reclining seats as opposed to the quality of the movie. Now, you should know, when you go to see a movie at this theater, do not expect super comfortable seats. There are some good seats in the back of the theater but the closer you get to the screen, the worse they are, so be sure you get there early. The concession stand is reasonably priced with a good selection of candy, decent popcorn, and a wonderful selection of beer. I would also highly recommend the rooftop viewing of any movie they show. It is really awesome up there. Get some tickets, grab some popcorn, twizzlers, a cold beer, and enjoy a really good movie lovingly presented by true film lovers.

That said, it was Thanksgiving weekend and Moana 2 was definitely not playing at any of my go-to spots. Enter Marcus Sycamore Cinema. I popped online, easily selected our matinee seats. I liked that we (post pandemic) have assigned seats. So much easier with kids. You don't have to get there a million years early and you can ensure you have an aisle when they inevitably have to go the bathroom at the most important, action packed time. We arrived at the cinema about five minutes early and found no one taking tickets? So we just walked back. This was odd to me. Though it was insanely dark and hard to find the aisle numbers, due to no lighting-- we found our seats fine. The concessions were priced as you'd assume and were tasty. I do love me a super buttery, salty popcorn. The seats and venue itself was well maintained and comfy. No complaints! Bathrooms were nearby and clean. Though, as a slender human, I will say those stalls are even hard for me to navigate. Overall, good bang for buck. No complaints!
