The owner and host Francesco, is the best B&B host we have ever experienced. He is passionate about what Palermo and his B&B have to offer. The location is in the city, but outside the old historic center so there is parking available near the unit for you to park your car and leave it during your entire stay. There is also frequent bus transportation to the historic center and other parts of town within 3 blocks. Because it is a residential area you have very good restaurants close by. No horrible touristic menus to be found anywhere near here. The unit itself is extremely comfortable. It is on the 12th floor - a penthouse and has an amazing terrace outside of the unit with an additional very large terrace on the 13th floor above it. There are commanding views of the entire city from the terraces. The room itself is well appointed with dark wood wainscoting and floors and tasteful decor. The ensuite bathroom is incredibly large for an inner-city room and includes an oversized soaking bathtub and a separate large shower. The WiFi worked very well in the unit and nearby terrace just outside the room. Francesco, is incredibly hospitable. He takes much pride in providing exceptional service to his guests. The suggestions of what sites to visit, how best to arrive there, where to eat and anything else you can think of in the city are extremely helpful. Breakfasts are without compare to other bed and breakfast locations. Francesco caters them specifically to your wishes. This is not a cookie cutter breakfast, it is made with great care and the desire to please. We requested some savory meats and cheeses and were surprised to find a perfectly ripe cherry tomato salad, delicious caponata, calzone with local bread, prosciutto, home grown basil and fresh mozzarella along with fresh fruit, fresh squeezed juice and yogurt. A schiacciata (sp?) of cooked ham and cheese was also included - enough for breakfast, lunch and more! We stayed two nights and felt very comfortable here. The privacy of being the only guests is great! We felt pampered. We highly recommend Attic 12 to savvy travelers who want to experience Palermo from a local's perspective.

Our…read morestay in Palermo was unforgettable - and their incomparable warmth & welcome was a huge part of why we feel the way we do about our experience in Sicily. To say that their attention to detail & they way they went ABOVE & BEYOND anything my husband and I could have ever imagined. We were in Sicily for my birthday - and somehow, they knew. We hadn't mentioned it to them (my husband swears!) - and yet, I came to breakfast to be greeted with a piece of Sicilian Almond Cake w/ a candle served in the breakfast dining area. They made reservations for us for dinner that evening, and even let the restaurant know in advance that we were coming there for my birthday. As if that weren't enough, when we got back to our room after a FANTASTIC dinner at Donna Eleanora (their recommendation, by the way), we walked in to see a birthday card w/ 2 champagne glasses on the entry table - and, YES, there was a chilled bottle of champagne in the refrigerator for us. They were fantastic w/ the valet service provided by the hotel & always made certain our car was accessible to us at any time - including on the morning we left at 4:30am to catch our flight. Antonella even packaged up a breakfast we could take with us to the airport on the morning we left (she left it for us in our refrigerator during our last night while we were out to dinner), since we couldn't stay, due to the early flight, to have breakfast at the hotel that morning. I cannot say adequate words to express how special they made our stay with them. When we go back to Sicily (and we are already planning to return), we WILL be staying with them again!

The hotel is in a good location and had restaurants and shopping within walking distance. It's in a busy neighborhood but there was little noise other than the occasional siren. Nothing from the hallway or neighbors. Checking in was easy though there was a little confusion as to the level of room I had booked. The emailed receipt clearly said "executive suite" but they want to put me in a standard room. After reviewing the email, this was dealt with quickly and I received the room I had booked and they apologized. My room was on the first floor (second floor in American) at the very end of the hallway so it was quiet. Balcony to the street, queen bed and work desk. Wifi worked reasonably well in my room but my friend in the next room down had some trouble. I think I was just at the edge of the AP's range. The room also had a hot water kettle and instant coffee packets. Twice I had to ask at the desk for creamer as it was neglected by the housekeeping staff who otherwise did a good job. A good amount of storage including a safe. Full shower had very hot water. I did not have their breakfast or visit the bar. Check-out was easy and they accurately charged me only for the small city tax. Overall, a very pleasant stay and if I were to return to Palermo I would stay here again. There was confusion with our reservation, and while it was eventually sorted out, the staff was not particularly friendly or accommodating. We were told we could all have our treatments together, but instead our appointments were split into different times when there didn't seem to be a reason for it. The biggest issue came when I tried to book a massage for another friend. We had booked our own appointments without a deposit and simply showed up, and we had already referred several people to the spa. When I made her reservation, the staff insisted I provide my credit card information even though I explained I was booking on someone else's behalf. They sent her a payment link, but her bank flagged the transaction because it was international. Before she even had an opportunity to resolve the issue or try another payment method, they canceled her appointment without contacting her or giving us a chance to fix it. It wasn't the deposit requirement that bothered me--it was how the situation was handled. The communication felt abrupt and discourteous, and there was very little effort to help find a solution. Customer service is just as important as the massage itself, especially for travelers. Unfortunately, because of how we were treated, I can't recommend this spa and would encourage others to look elsewhere.

From the tastefully decorated public areas to the comfortable and relaxing rooms, the Hotel Porta Felice is a virtual paradise in gritty Palermo. It's not every trip that I have such a thoroughly great review, so I'll keep it short and sweet and say, if you book here you will not regret it. Pros - Spacious rooms, modern conveniences (flat screen tv, big safe, mini bar, excellent light and air controls), super clean, the entire hotel from hallways to lobby to rooms is beautifully decorated, free breakfast buffet with wonderful view of the city, good location, competent service, luxurious beds, huge bathrooms. Cons - Only a few minor ones: parking here is 16 euros a day, however on the site it's listed as (or implied to be) a free "feature" along with other complimentary things in the hotel such as elevators, fitness room and breakfast. That was a bit disappointing, but there's plenty of street parking so it wasn't a big deal. Also, the area a few blocks from the hotel can at best be described as grimy. Generally safe, but somewhat less than pristine.
