Disappointing Experience with Surgery & Post-Operative Billing -- Proceed with Caution I feel deeply disappointed by my experience with Dr. Marc Samson at LA Orthopedic Center and feel a responsibility to share it so others can make an informed decision. Last year, I underwent knee surgery with Dr. Samson for a torn meniscus. Prior to the procedure, I had clearly requested that the tear be repaired, not removed. Unfortunately, he did the opposite of what I asked--he removed part of the meniscus instead of attempting a repair. This decision not only went against my explicit request but has affected my long-term recovery in ways I had hoped to avoid. That alone would have been enough to leave me disheartened. But the post-surgical experience made things much worse. At the time of the surgery, I was unemployed and struggling financially. When I received the bill, I immediately called the office to request a payment plan--something manageable I could commit to, even during financial hardship. I called three separate times, spoke with staff, and left detailed messages. Each time, I was told someone would speak with the doctor and get back to me. No one ever did. Instead of offering any assistance or working with me in good faith, the account was eventually sent to a collections agency without warning. The bill is now accruing daily interest, making it even more difficult to resolve. I believe it's important to let others know that in my experience, Dr. Samson did not listen to my treatment requests and showed no willingness to help me navigate the financial burden afterward--even when I proactively reached out multiple times. Sending a patient to collections without any attempt at communication is not just disappointing, it's disheartening and, frankly, feels punitive. Please consider this before seeking care here, especially if you are hoping to be heard--both in the exam room and after the surgery is over. read more

This is not a review of Marc Samson but of his office staff and the way the office is run (which is ultimately his resonsibility). First, the office has a dysfunctional telephone system, with very long hold times. Sometimes they don't bother to answer at all. And when you visit, their manner in person is cold and uncaring, with a rushed, factory-like atmosphere. I visit many different doctors office these days. This one stands out as the one I have the least confidence in. If you can't even manage a telephone system, why should I entrust you with the much more complicated topic of my health? Pros: Projects empathy and trustworthiness, seems to know his stuff Cons: Appointments felt rushed (I know I'm a MediCal patient, but please take time to listen to me and answer my questions), REALLY bad advice Dr. Samson diagnosed a complete tear of the ACL as I was mulling seasonal job offers involving constant bushwacking through very rugged terrain. He assured me that a torn ACL placed my meniscus at no greater risk of tear (with physical therapy and a brace) than an intact knee, so I accepted the job. Not only did I later have to deal with my knee giving out at a boat-in/fly-in site in the Alaskan wilderness with not enough ibuprofen, in a region with extremely limited medical resources, but during the operation my new surgeon found that both my inner and outer meniscus had torn since that advice. Seven years later of dealing with chronic knee instability, I check it out with another MRI, and my meniscus retore in the same place again. read more

I just got out of knee surgery with Dr Samson..and everything went absolutely PERFECT! He is just a great guy and very easy to talk to...a great listener...and just brilliant in what he does. They said I would need crutches after the knee surgery preparing a torn meniscus but I definitely do not need crutches and can even walk just fine...There is no pain and just some very slight discomfort...he is such a great Doctor and his staff is AMAZING...all the nurses were incredibly nice to me.,....even laughing at some of my jokes...I told them all to buy my NVDL stock...(which is NVDA in steroids). Anway, I could not have gotten a better surgeon...and so easy to talk to..he was telling me all about the great cities in Italy and other one where he is from Bologna//where apparently we get the word baloney from! ..or was he joking? You'll have to wait 30 minutes after your scheduled appointment. In addition, it's almost impossible to get assistance. I have been trying to get a hold of their authorization department for weeks. Called three times and no one picked up. Left three messages, no phone call back. Very disappointed with the service. Also, been having leg pain and my sports medicine doctor would do strength test and actually touch my leg. Saw Dr. Samson multiple times and I had to ask please feel my quad I feel like there's something wrong with it. Basically I had to ask him to him to do his job. read more

Dr. Marc Samson is an expert when it comes to shoulders. He did a rotator cuff and other arthroscopic reconstruction on my shoulders. I wouldn't trust anyone else to do my procedure, however minor. He is truly a professional with a great attitude. He inspires confidence, and he enjoys working at Los Angeles Orthopaedics Center because of the incredibly welcoming and friendly staff and providers. I had a sports related labrum (shoulder) tear and had been having chronic pain for over a year, and Dr. Samson did an arthroscopic repair. While seeing other doctors prior to Dr. Samson and doing physical therapy without improvement was frustrating, once I was referred to Dr. Samson the whole process of evaluation and undergoing surgery was without hiccups. Very good first visit and preparation for my surgery. Answered all of my questions, and enjoyed our visit. Always very informative and professional. He is an amazing Dr; he explained what he was doing before the procedure and during the procedure. It cares about his patients and wants them to be at their best. His office was very efficient when corresponding with my primary doctor's office and my insurance company in regards to the paperwork. The last thing I needed was to be in pain and worrying about getting paperwork to those offices. All of the receptionists that I have met were very professional, efficient and pleasant. My surgery was thought to take 45 minutes, however I was told it took 1 1/2 hour and found more damage than expected. I am now 100% pain free! I saw Dr. Marc Samson, MD, Orthopedist in April 2021. When he saw me he ordered an x-ray of my shoulder without interviewing me as to why I came. The x-ray was done by a man at the PIH building. After the x-ray I waited for Dr. Simon in the examining room. He entered with two associates whom he said he was showing around. They didn't say anything. Dr. Simon asked me to raise my arms which I did, and then he offered me a choice: Cortisone shot or physical therapy. I chose physical therapy. From the few words I said, and perhaps the x-ray, he wrote on his report that I had sticky something. And he and his two associates walked out. Altogether he saw me for not longer than 2 minutes. No time for questions. His nurse brought me two pages of physical therapy referrals and walked out. After I left and went home, the nurse called and said the doctor wants you to have a prescription for a salve for pain, which I didn't need. Dr. Simon did not help me. You can't do a good diagnosis without talking or observing a person for more than two minutes. He didn't even know why I came or what I wanted except from what I wrote on the application. I wasted my time. By the way, the report he made on my visit included all the things I wrote on the pages that the receptionist gave me, which I filled out before seeing him--including clerical errors in transcription. read more

It is very frustrating to have to wait in the lobby 40 minutes after my appointment time then go into the room wait another 20 minutes for the Dr. Then he comes in and didn't review my MRI but was ready to give me a cortisone shot. I think not sir. How about you read my chart and go review my disc I brought you from the MRI location you sent me too. I did not like this Dr he really does not pay attention to his patients and does not thoroughly review the chart before he comes in the room to see you. Double and quadruple booking patients and having to wait to see him is very unprofessional and not respectful of the patient. All the while I am only given 2 hours for my workers comp Dr visits, I spend half of that time waiting to be seen. read more

Dr. Marc A. Samson, I can't thank you enough. This man comes with my highest praises. My case is pretty unique. I need crutches in order to walk around, have needed them my whole life. In addition to that, I live a pretty active lifestyle, I've been a committed gym goer for over 30 years, sometimes going twice a day. Not surprisingly, when I realized I needed this surgery I was terrified. A couple of months later, and it's healed so well, I'm as good as new. There's no trace of having gone through surgery. I had a rotator cuff surgery. For obvious reasons I was limited to a wheelchair, but after 4 weeks I was back to walking on my crutches. At 6 weeks I felt almost completely back to normal. I had the pleasure of Dr Samson's care after a rather painful meniscus tear. I was out of work for over 2 months. The only good thing about my misfortune was Dr Samson's care and a successful recovery. I was initially determined to not have surgery and he was respectful of my wishes. Long story short, I underwent surgery and returned to work as an orthopedic floor nurse within 4 weeks. I have been working 12 hour shifts (full-time) for almost a month without any pain. I really didn't feel any pain after surgery. Dr Samson is just a good person to the core. He is obviously very dedicated to his patients. The LA Orthopedic office runs quite an operation. Yes, they are busy. It's no surprise that Dr Samson and the three other surgeons in the group are in such high demand. The staff was efficient at tackling a mountain of paperwork for my medical leave. I am left with two tiny pin-point sized scars on my knee. It's hard for many to believe a meniscus surgery took place! I look forward to running and hiking within the next few weeks. So much love and appreciation for Dr. Samson and his amazing staff!! Tore my knee acl last summer and was originally seeing another doctor in Beverly Hills but wanted a second opinion. When I met with Dr.Samson I had a lot of questions and hesitations because it was my second acl knee surgery and I knew how intense of a procedure and recovery it was. As a college athlete, I suffered an ACL tear and subsequent meniscus surgery. Fast forward a couple of decades and I was back under the knife for another ACL repair. After complications arose from my most recent ailment, I decided to look for a different sports medicine Orthopaedic specialists. Thank god I found Dr Samson. Not only does he stay up to date with current clinical data and new technology/techniques, he is probably the coolest person I've met. He has a very simple way of explaining things and takes his time to listen and understand. He knows how to manage my fears and put me at ease while explaining the precautions I needed to be aware of. Great doctor, very upfront, understanding and empathetic. He thoroughly explains every little bit of what's going on with you and what your options are. I felt like he spent a lot of time with me and made sure that I was satisfied with the treatment plan we chose, as the last ortho doctor I saw was somewhat dismissive and didn't give me any real options. It was a two week wait to get an appointment, but it was well worth it. Also, Dr. Samson has an awesome bedside manner, and is just a cool guy to have a conversation with. I found Dr. Samson and his staff to be excellent. First off, his front desk staff was pleasant with me. I don't need or expect staff to be chipper and smiley. I just don't want rudeness or to be dismissed. This staff was neither of these things. They have a pretty high volume of patients, but the front desk staff was never short, snippy, or dismissive with in-taking patients, collecting information, etc. I've been to many Dr. Office's where the front staff doesn't give even a "hello" but rather "sign in, sit down and wait til I call you" (i.e., "get out of my face and don't even think about asking me a question or interrupting my flow"). Not the case with Dr. Samson's staff. No complaints from me with the staff at all. Pleasant, well-spoken, calm and they don't look stressed or unhappy to be there. As for the office facility, no complaints there either. Very clean, spacious office nice office. They don't seem to overbook patients. It was not a cattle call when I was there. My wait time was 10 minutes or less. As for Dr. Samson, I found him to be extremely knowledgeable, patient and thorough. What I also observed (and heard through the walls) was that he has a patient, calm, firm, confident and explanatory disposition, and with a diversity of patients. When I say "diversity of patients," to be blunt, I mean everyone from me (a Black guy with a sports injury); to an elderly Spanish-speaking patient; to a confused patient with her constantly interfering spouse asking the same question a million times; to a scared patient who feared surgery. With all of us, he seemed pleasant and welcoming, unafraid, and not looking at us like we're something "different." He didn't dumb down to elderly patients, which I often see many doctors do. He looks you in the eye. He listens to you. He gives all options and leaves some decision-making up to you as the patient, giving you the pros and cons of your options. He treats you with care and concern. He obviously is very busy, but manages to never leave a room without all the patient's concerns addressed, and the patient felt heard and understood. I am very observing of doctors because I secretly wanted to be one. :-) He is one of the best doctors I've ever come across. Highly recommended. read more
