I had always wanted to try this, and now am (mostly) glad I did! We prepaid a booking for two, a…read moreweek ahead of time (approx $90/ticket including ~$8 fee for each). Then the venue suddenly changed from Dante's Fire (Grant/Tucson Blvd) to the Viscount Suites (Brdwy/Swan-ish). Location wasn't problematic but part of the appeal (and brightly underscored in their advertising) was the gourmet meal at the behest of Iron Chef Ken Foy. The circumstances for the abrupt change had absolutely Nothing to do with Magic Dinner Theater (MDT). Rather, Dante's themselves had the rug pulled out by their building's owner when they announced sudden closure of the premises for remodeling leaving both MDT and Dante's without a venue. MDT did a remarkable job (as explained by the boss and MC, Ross H.) finding a replacement venue and relocating all of their equipment in a matter of one week. Suffice to say, the dinner was a bummer, at merely cafeteria quality (green beans, mashed potatoes and thin turkey slices with gravy). I didn't even bother photographing it. That said, the "theater" part of the MDT was a joy, with the entire event running from 6:30 - 10pm. There were six tables of 10 people each and it appeared that every table was sold out. With the exception of one table that had four kids, it also appeared as though everyone was "coupled." Starting (almost) promptly at 6:30p each table had a solo magician performing various (very impressive) card tricks right in front of you. After about 10-12 minutes the magicians would rotate. For nearly an hour you are literally blown away by the sleight of hand of each magician. Then there's a pause while "dinner" (ahem) is served which takes about an hour (salad; turkey; cannoli). Iced Tea is included but wine ($7) and well drinks (simple cocktails at $8) can be ordered from the wait staff at those super reasonable prices. During dinner is when the murder mystery takes place. Everyone is provided some clues and characters along with a police report and you have that dinner-hour to solve the mystery as a table. Three tables (including ours :) identified the character who committed the murder, the motive, and the lethal instrument (all three are required). One person gets designated as the table rep to collect a (inexpensive) gag/prize. The main event follows dinner and consists of another 45 minute show on the main stage by the featured/headliner magician. Throughout the show a handful of folks will be selected to help the headliner. All were female and none flatly refused. The magicians were all gracious whenever making you part of the public show and that is appropriate. After the show I asked how frequently the mystery changes and I was told there are 3-4 different plots so having gone to one doesn't foreclose another viewing down the road. The Viscount proved to be a valiant stand-in venue, save for the food. If the food doesn't/cannot elevate I would strongly urge Ross and Co to shrink the fanfare surrounding the food (and shrink the ticket fee) accordingly. This was never communicated ahead of time--nothing on the tickets, no warning, nothing. I asked about a refund, and the on-site manager--who appeared very young and inexperienced--told me he'd have to "check with higher-ups." There was no attempt to resolve the situation or offer any real help. Just dismissive and unprofessional. Sure, I could have taken my purse back to my car, but it was parked over a mile away. That's not a reasonable solution once you're already at the venue and in line. Policies like this need to be clearly communicated in advance. Leaving people stranded at the door is unacceptable. Overall, a frustrating and poorly managed experience.

We found convenient parking in the lot directly across the street, but you can also park on the street if you can find a spot. Appreciated that they had 2 NA beer options at the bar, and all of the staff were friendly. Restrooms were under construction while we were there so there were apparently porta-potties available if needed (we did not visit those). We'd go back next time we're in town if there was someone we wanted to see!

Awesome concert venue with parking really being the only concern. This review, however, is for an…read moreevent... the weekly Salsa Thursday Social. And let me put this out there as a fair disclaimer, I've got two left feet. We chose the 7pm option ($17) which included an hour of instruction to begin with. The other ticketing option starts at 8p ($7) and is the actual Salsa Social. I can only gush about the camaraderie and concerted effort that was uninhibitedly displayed by the delightfully wide-ranging crowd of about 100 during the 8p social. Wide ranging in age, demographics, abilities, and with a near 50-50 gender balance too. The cathedral height and vast open floor created an auditory airiness and ample distance between everyone for salsa missteps. The lone frustration about this event was in the beginning 7pm hour. The experienced couple on stage, leading the instructions, polled everyone (roughly 50 folks at this phase) and about a 1/3 indicated they were true beginners. They then proceeded to demonstrate sequences at mind-boggling speeds. Eventually some folks urged them to slow down but then the transition to the next series of steps would occur barely 5 minutes later. At the half-hour mark you're trying to remember 4-5 sequences AND string them all together. Yes, there were lots of smiles, some surrenders, and flashes of brilliance (not me). My partner had a little informal salsa exposure through weddings and parties and even she could barely keep up with the instructions. Here's the catch-22. IF you can (truly) master these 6-8 basic sequences AND string them together AT salsa-music-speed, you can have a convincingly decent time during the 8p social. IF! So I get the urgency of mastering these modest starting sequences in the first hour. But for those beginners contemplating attending, simply know what you're getting into. Had I known what I now know, I probably would have been too intimidated to try at such a fast pace and instead opted for some private/studio lessons first. The Social hour really is a wonderful opportunity to explore your inner salsa, no matter your ability. The crowd is very forgiving. But your inner critic will probably want some fundamentals more buttoned up :)

However, he was so condescending about everything. I asked for a drink and he corrected me on how to order it-but not in a helpful way? More like he was annoyed with me. I turned 21 almost 15 years ago. I order the same drinks and have never been told that a bartender doesn't understand what I'm asking for- even if I don't use the proper bartending terminology. My roommate asked for a vodka redbull and the bartender made some weird comment about this not being one of our "hipster bars" like ??? I drink vodka red bulls in literal biker bars. We prefer smaller, low-key bars. It was such a strange and judgmental thing to say. He basically talked to US as if we thought we were too good for that place? Idk it's really hard to explain. But it left a horrible taste in our mouths. A couple came in a while before we left and seemed to be friends of the bartender- which somehow made the vibe even more uncomfortable. It's as if they all wanted us to leave. It's so weird to make your literal ONLY paying patrons feel so awkward and unwelcome. Dude needs a serious attitude adjustment. The a-hole bartender theme is out dated. That's just bad business. It's one thing to be busy and short with people when you're serving a full bar; that's usually expected, but you don't have to be a jerk to the only three people in the place lol.
