This is an update to my review from August, 2014. Time really does fly! I would reiterate my statement that the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. I would also note that Maplewood's service department and customer service are second to none. I recently went to Maplewood to buy a new rear tire and have it installed. There was a communication problem, and the order wasn't exactly as I had requested. I received a customer survey from Maplewood about my experience. I replied to the survey and told them what happened. The Product Manager at Maplewood replied to my survey, apologized for the confusion, and sent me a goodwill credit of $50 to be used on a purchase. THIS is exactly what great customer service is: listening to your customer and responding appropriately when something goes wrong. I won't have any service department other than Maplewood work on my bike. read more

The best bike shop in St. Louis area! I've purchased two bikes here and they are extremely knowledgeable. Bikes (Trek) have a two year warranty and they'll replace anything that goes wrong during that time under warranty. The bike mechanic called me after checking my bike and discussed everything he saw on my bike for 20 minutes...very thorough... I ride about 1,200 miles a year on gravel... so several things needed to be repaired, many under warranty. Great bike specialty shop! read more

1st TIME CUSTOMER, LAST TIME CUSTOMER! SHADY SALES TACTICS! I went in today shortly after they opened to check out a used bike listed on Facebook Marketplace. I had all intentions of buying it. Spencer brought it out and I was inspecting it and ready to purchase it when it was literally taken out from under me because another person apparently had first "dibs" on it. Apparently there is some rule about who you can sell to. For the record, I contacted them on FB Thursday at 4:06. Ironically, then I was shown the new bikes and was offered to be sold one (for only double the price of the one I was looking at!). I was told if the deal fell through on the used bike, then I could buy it (despite the fact that I was the first one there). As I waited, I considered trying to negotiate for a 2nd used bike listed on FB that was displayed out on the floor. I thought maybe (in good faith) we could make a deal on that one. I asked if I could speak to Spencer and was told (by the girl on the floor) I could leave my number because someone was driving in from Illinois (driving over 100 miles away) who was apparently going to look at the 2nd bike. I stated that I was willing to buy the bike then and there, but Spencer wouldn't even come out to talk about it. I stated that they had no idea how many miles I drove to the shop to buy a bike. I clearly felt disrespected and unimportant to this business. This is no way to treat customers (especially when I was willing to spend a couple thousand dollars!). I just had a really good experience there today. I took my Trek Emonda in for a checkup, and because it was shifting poorly. John not only fix that, but also found that the bottom bracket seals need to be replaced, and also gave it a thorough going over. All for a price that I found more than fair. I mean seriously, when is the last time you went to a shop and spent less than you thought you would to get your issue resolved? On a related note, I have now bought three trek bicycles from Maplewood. Not only have I been pleased with Maplewood's service, Trek has been absolutely fabulous with me, standing behind their warranties and going over and above on two occasions. read more

I went for a ride on Saturday and my bike was not shifting properly. Started after a flat tire the previous weekend where I got the flat literally in front of another bike shop. They put in a new tube and had me out the door quickly, but the mechanic messed around with my chain and the shifting problem started right away. Fast forward to Saturday and as I rode into Babler Park, I realized that Pedal For the Cause was in progress, so I went to check out the rest stop and who did I see, Chris and another mechanic with their mobile fix it van. They had my bike shifting and ready to ride in less than five minutes. I was so happy to see them as I knew my bike was going to be worked on by professionals!It needs some added work, so I will drop it off tomorrow for maintenance, new chain, and what ever they recommend. Great shop, people, and they don't look down on those like me who ride a lot of miles, but are not mechanically inclined, nor interested in being mechanically inclined. read more

Once I was able to get in the store she directed me to the repair area spoke to one of the repair specialist who was able to find the correct hardware for my hub. Nice employees working in the repair shop in the back. They replaced the tube in the rear wheel of my bf's bike, which has been problematic in recent months, but it went totally flat after riding a mile. He called to inform them of the issue, and the employee who answered sounded sympathetic. This exact scenario played out weeks earlier after my bf got the rear tube replaced at Big Shark (where he'd originally purchased the bike) and the tire went flat during his ride home from the shop--the Big Shark employee who answered the phone there immediately copped an attitude and sounded offended that they could have possibly made a mistake in diagnosing what was wrong with the bike. When we brought the bike back in to Maplewood, we were told we'd be comp'ed labor, although that didn't actually happen because the person who rang my bf up was different from the one doing the repairs who mentioned the discount... oh well... the thought counts. The bf was happy to pay the extra $12.99+tax for labor because he was treated much better here than at Big Shark. read more

I've been coming to this establishment for decades after hearing it was the place for serious cyclists. They helped me learn about toe clips then cleats. They convinced me that wearing bicycle shorts (then made out of wool) were vastly superior to cutoffs and that the utility offered by a jersey would contribute to a more enjoyable ride. In short they progressed me from a novice to a confident, competent rider. My goal of riding a century (100 miles) every year of my 60s will be complete in two more years. Maplewood has provided support for a lifetime sport that has kept me (relatively) fit and certainly mobile at 68. I wanted to treat myself to a new bike and had a bike fitting done. My new ride is a substantial improvement over my venerable carbon fiber Trek. Not only are my ergonomics more conducive to an efficient, comfortable experience the new Trek is red. Oh, I meant to say light. It's much lighter. I could go on but this is not a bike review. I return to my praise of the Maplewood staff by offering this. I am currently in California where I paid my sister a surprise visit. The staff prepped my bike for shipping and *did the shipping* as well. Not only that, but because of the nature of my visit--wanting it to be a surprise--I had to change the shipping time frame. Twice. This is a fantastic shop. I brought my bike in with a bent brake rotor, and they straightened it on the spot and didn't charge me. (I couldn't turn the front wheel and fully expected i would need a new rotor). More complicated repairs they also do well. I've had 2 great experiences with Maplewood Bicycle in the (not recent) past...but today I was challenged MOST VIGOROUSLY by an employee over what I wanted to spend MY money on! I was very patient with this fella and repeatedly explained that I was not interested in what he wanted to sell, but he just wasn't interested in selling me what I WAS interested in buying. Instead he treated me like we were on a message board or the comments section of a YouTube video, repeatedly trying to convince me of how wrong I was to not want what HE liked. I eventually (and again, very patiently) gave up trying to explain my position on the product he really Really wanted me to want and just said "well, I guess you just don't have what I'm looking for" and thanked them for their time. The service here is really incredible. I walked in with two 90s style bikes that I found in my parents garage. I really just wanted to fix them up to have something to bounce around town with. Jim... the service manager welcomed me in... spent a good bit of time asking me what the bikes would be used for and then gave me a couple of options. I never felt intimidated, even though I know nothing about bikes more than what I learned when I was 12 years old. He suggested we take a test ride on a new model. He thought we'd really enjoy spending some money on a lower tiered new bike rather than dumping money into the outdated ones we had. ...and he was right. One ride on one of the new Trek bikes and my girlfriend was hooked. We weren't prepared to spend $500 on a new bike right this second, but it was clear after riding that we should save for a new one rather than spend gobs of money on the existing bikes. He was understanding and said he would get our current bikes running for a minimal cost. He knew that because of his time educating us and great service we would be back to buy a new bike after a couple more paychecks. And we will. read more

Bottom Line: Down to Earth Staff, Speaks Your Language, Quality Products Overview: A recent Yelp talk thread sparked me to write this review. I have been a customer to this store for road bike purchases since roughly 2003. I have purchased two road bikes from this store and have steered other folks to try this shop. In all respects, the store has never disappointed. Bicycle Gear: When I first started commuting by bike, I realized I had a need for several accessories. I purchased everything from replacement tires/tubes to an expensive headlight. In most all cases, I have been quite pleased with the products recommended by this shop. Certainly, I could have tried to go bargain basement on different items, but there is a "you get what you pay for", in most cases. When you are out on the road, that five-ten bucks you saved online or for a cheaper part means little. Bicycle Purchases: There is not a question in my mind that I will always buy my bikes at Maplewood. The fitting that they provide to me as a rider is invaluable. It makes cycling enjoyable. Enough said. Service: My experience with their service department has been primarily quality. You have to realize that during the peak riding season, their service department is very busy. If you want to ride your bike on a Saturday, and you find out you have mechanical issues that morning, realize you may be in for a bit of a wait. Just be smart about the scheduling of your bike repairs, and you should be taken care of without any problems. I just wanted to mention an experience that I had here which I used as a learning experience. There was a day where I needed my bike repaired promptly, and well, I let another mechanic at the shop that I had not used before inspect my bike. His recommendation was a pricey one; it was also one that I was not 100% sure was necessary. After coming back in later in the year for another repair and speaking with my usual mechanic, it turned out the repair may not have been necessary. Rule of thumb here is, if you have some doubt about a recommendation, you might just want to ask for a manager and double check the recommendation. Summary: I would be remiss not to mention that this shop has supported the popular MS150 bicycle ride out of Columbia, MO for some time. What stands out is their support of riders by doing on-the-road repairs, but they also pay host to classes leading up to the ride (in years past), as well as providing some sort of discount to participants during the year at their shop. If it was not for Maplewood, I do not think my experience with cycling would be as great as it has been over these past several years. I hope I can rely on them for years to come. read more

Every cyclist has "their" shop. The shop that you have developed a history with, and has become part of your life. Maplewood Bicycle is that shop for me. I bought my first serious bike here in 1982 (a Trek 613). That bike got stolen years ago, and I still pray that a hive of Killer Bees will swarm that scoundrels Nutsack. When I got back into serious cycling in 2007, I went straight back to Maplewood and bought a Lemond Zurich. Once again, the service was perfect. They sized me up, and that bike fits me like it should. Currently, I'm having a custom frame built for me. I needed a computer fit for the builder to design the bike from......and Maplewood has one of the best fitters in the industry (Tim Ray). Tim took the time to find my optimum position, and made numerous measurements to send to the builder. When my frame is ready, I am inclined to take it to Maplewood to be built with top-tier components. I haven't lived in St. Louis for years, and these guys are still my go-to shop. Maplewood carries anything that you'd ever need. In addition to Carbon bikes, they also are big fans of Titanium bikes. They carry several brands of that type of bike. There are bigger shops, there are fancier shops.......but if you want a "real" bike shop.......head on to Maplewood Bicycle and start your lifelong relationship with a bunch of folks that know what you need before you do! read more

While in town for a long weekend, I decided to help my sister purchase a bicycle to ride around in Forest Park. While we had heard good things about a number of other stores in the area, I wanted to see what Maplewood Bicycle had to offer. First and foremost, the service was great. They were both friendly and knowledgeable. The shop employees made sure that all proper adjustments were made on the bike including saddle adjustments. Second, as per what the shop employee told us, all bikes come with a 10% discount on accessories and free tune-ups/adjustments for life. Not a bad deal in my book. I bought my new trek bike from maplewood during COVID in 2020 when bike inventory was tight and was impressed with how they quickly found the bike I was looking for and got it in just a couple of weeks. Since then I have gone back to add a sensor and rack and very happy with help from store. Most recently I had minor mechanical problem that they solved and also did quick overall check, lubricated and adjusted all while I waited and at no cost since I bought bike from them. I discussed my current Trek bicycle search with the staff who told me why things were the way they were, why other shops wouldn't transfer a bicycle or ship it, how Trek works with shops, best bets to obtain a specific model I was looking for, etc. They were the most helpful of all shops--even Trek branded ones. They even helped find a bike in a different area when I originally went to purchase one there (I had been looking for a while). This is an outstanding bike shop with excellent service. I am new to road bikes. I took my bike in to get the brake lever straightened (I actually thought the handlebar was bent and I'd have to spend ~$100 to get it replaced). One of the staff (Chris) immediately helped me out, and then proceeded to do a quick inspection. He walked me through 3 tune-up options. He was very transparent on price and repair time, and didn't pressure me whatsoever in choosing a more expensive option. Bottom line, I got my brake lever fixed and my back wheel balanced while I browsed their awesome selection of bikes, all for a very reasonable price. Here's the story. I dropped off my rear wheel because it had a loose spoke but still spun true., (2 bike shops, including Maplewood told me this) I spun the wheel when I dropped it of and showed them that is was true so I didn't know what to do, especially since the wheel (Mavic R-Sys rear) is very sensitive as the spokes are under heavy tension. I dropped the wheel off and was told it would be about an hour's worth of labor and that they would let me know if they have issues. I hadn't heard anything after a week(??) so I called the shop and they had it scheduled to be looked at the next week. Firstly, if you know the time frame means you holding onto my wheel for nearly 3 weeks I'll go somewhere else. So finally I called yesterday and said I need the wheel. (I got the cassette and stuck it on another wheel that I was borrowing, but that can only go on so long) Soooo, today I get a call and the mech tells me the rim is cracked. I'm really bummed obviously. When I get home I inspect the rim and see this huge 1-2 inch crack. Well they were right the rim is cracked, but to my surprise. ALL THE SPOKES ARE TENSIONED!!! Did my loose spoke magically tighten itself. they are all tight and I know which spoke was loose bc it has residue from where I taped it to highlight which spoke was loose. Did someone at the shop try to tension the spoke and crack my rim, idk and i won't make that accusation. All I know is this. My previously loose spoke is now very tight and there is a huge crack in the rim. I certainly won't be going back. read more

After they looked at it twice and told me the noise my bike was making was normal, I took it to Maplewood. It took The tech at Maplewood about two minutes to figure out what was wrong.
