This review is only for bike rentals, not for the actual shop. This is a great place to rent a bike for a ride around Forest Park. While they basically only have hybrid bikes (no road bikes), the park is small enough (only about 7 miles around) that you really only need a hybrid bike to see it. They have a selection of different hybrids in various sizes, and my bike worked fine. You also get a lock and helmet with your rental. Pricing is competitive ($10 an hour, with discounts for renting all day), and the checkout process is quick and easy. Staff is knowledgeable and will give you riding advice (getting to the park can be tricky). They are about a 10 minute walk from the subway line or the park entrance. read more

Nicest guys in town. I've been going to them for several years and have always had a good experience. Recently, I had my bike serviced before a multi-day ride, but because of a problem with UPS a needed part did not arrive. I did not have a spare bike, so Mike's Bikes gave me a loaner bike (the owner's own, nicest bike I've ever ridden!) for the weekend so I would not have to miss my ride. Some of the worst customer service I've ever received, and if you tell them that, they just want to argue with you. Just give them a minute to post their rebuttal to this negative review. I called them about getting some tune ups and they seemed pretty disinterested in helping me get what I needed by the time I needed it or offering alternatives. Called back a few days later and got some tires ordered and decided to give them a try anyways. Went in and after they opened late, (yes, it was only 10 minutes, but they'll tell you they opened on time) they were still disinterested in getting the bikes checked in so we went elsewhere. A simple apology or even a sign that they were interested in helping or wanted our business would have gone a long way. read more

I had a great experience at this shop.. they were really helpful. I came on a visit to get some accessories and ended up buying the perfect bike for me. Matt was extremely helpful in sizing the bike and getting one for my needs. I tried it out, bought it and returned the next day and the bike was all packed ready to take with me on a plane out of the country. Reassembly was easy, I had a minor problem and called them and they explained what to do over the phone. I went in with my girlfriend looking to buy our first bikes, and they were extremely helpful answering any of our questions, allowing us to test-ride several bikes to get a sense of their differences, and made the whole process very easy. I know nothing when it comes to bikes. Fortunately, the staff here does. What I do know is value and customer service, both of which hit the high marks here. I brought my old and beat up road bike because my rear brake cable became detached, and by the way the rear wheel had way too much lateral movement which I had been ignoring for the past two years. By the time I had visited a shop next door and come back, they had fixed both. For $15, my rear brake works and my bike has never ridden smoother. This is a great place to rent a bike. The staff was super friendly, the price was reasonable and the bikes were great! We rented the bikes for a full 24-hours, helmets and lock included. We were able to get to forest park pretty easily from the location and the biking around the loop of the park is such a perfect way to spend part of your day! On my bike ride to Forest Park, I just so happened to notice Mike's Bikes along Euclid in the Central West End. I'm in the market for a new bike and decided to pop in for a look. That's when I realized that Mike's is more of a repair and rental shop. No worries. The staff was extra friendly and happy to show me their bikes and give pointers on shopping for a new bike. To top it off, the guy offers to throw a little lube on my bike chain. No charge, no problem, and thanks for stopping in. 5 stars all the way for these guys. I have been to Mikes Bikes a few times now for both buying a new bike as well as some repairs. I have run into a couple of employees. Two of the three have been usually very friendly and helpful. I have gotten things fixed in as quickly as 15 minutes (e.g. failed brakes). Sometimes if it is a straightforward problem and not a busy day, they will even give you their opinion for free. Service is fairly inexpensive for the quality and efficiency. The one thing I do not appreciate is one of their employees is fairly slacking. I have gone into their store with an issue on an afternoon and told it would take a few hours, and hence, I should come back when I can drop my bike off for at least 24 hours. The guy refused to even look at my bike. I went in a few days later planning to drop off my bike, and his colleague took a quick look at my bike, and fixed it without even me having to drop it off or pay anything. I was fairly suprised. On another day, I went in to look into buying a new, secondhand bike. One of the employees was fairly helpful, while the other one (same guy who had sent me away before) passed snide and unhelpful comments. Eventually I was turned off and just decided to go to another place to buy a bike. I would recommend to people if they find the store unhelpful, then give them a second chance, as you may just have met the wrong person behind the desk on that particular day. They've also helped me identify some weird rattles on my bike free of charge. These guys are the real deal. I recently moved to the area and bought a used bike on Craigslist to commute to campus and back. The bike I bought had a deformed tire, so I initially took it to Mesa Cycles and the guy there practically blew me off and told me to deflate the tire and then air it back up (didn't fix it). I then took it by Big Shark Bicycle Company and they did actually take the time to look at it, but then the guy just told me to buy a new tire. So I took it to Mike's Bikes and the guy there probably spent 20 minutes working on the tire and made a major difference in the shape of the tire. I don't know enough about bikes to speak on their knowledge or inventory, but they know how to provide quality customer service. I just went back by to have them replace a busted tube and they offered a free beer while I waited. They are really personable guys and even though this shop is a further drive for me than the others, they will always have my service. read more

Hadn't had a bike in years, but was given a older fixer upper. You need not waste your gas or pedal power on going anywhere else!! I thought, being in the CWE, that it would be expensive. I have been in there probably 6 times now, and have been nothing but impressed, but the last visit took the cake. I put my bike in the day before to have a new back tire, new chain and new sprocket they had to order put on. When I went in Saturday to get the bike (and a helmet), they asked if I had my Credit Union Card with me. I replied yes, and one of the clerks told me the chain guard over the sprocket had done it's job and, once the bent cover was taken off, the sprocket was found to be straight, so they actually put money back ON the card, telling me I didn't need the new sprocket!! Service and honesty like this in a large city?? Won't find me anyplace else!! HIGHLY recommend!! read more

I needed to rent a bike for some weird intervals over the course of weekend, and the guys at Mike's Bikes were fantastic; most shops will only rent in hour intervals, so you end up paying for a lot of time you don't need to, but Mikes' Bikes was happy to rent to me for a total of X hours over the course of a weekend, so I only paid for what I needed. I also need a particular kind of bike because of a medical issue, and they were more than happy to accommodate. I picked this company (mistakenly) over Big Shark where I purchased my other bike for a basic tune-up. The tune-up was $50 but the technician called back three times supposedly finding additional issues. Called back a day later and found to my amazement a bill of $111.00!!. Spoke to someone who was condescending and argumentative about items on my invoice that weren't discussed or approved. I asked to speak to a manager about the invoice but he refused. After a somewhat heated exchange, I asked about the owner's availability and to my surprise he informed me he was the OWNER!!! As a Mom and Pop company, Mike's Bikes is one of worst companies I've ever dealt with as far as timeliness and customer service. Stick with well-established bike shops like Maplewood Bicycle or Big Shark in St. Louis. Stay clear of these unprofessional scam artists at Mike's Bikes. read more
