At the exterior, the landscape slopes toward the cottage more than we thought was comfortable. The showers and dishwashing facilities were in good condition. This region generally has quite a few different attractions for nature lovers including a long hike along the Appalachian trail nearby and proximity to quaint small towns. Last, but definitely not least, Nick and his partner were among the most accommodating and friendly hosts one could ask for. When we had difficulty setting a campfire they generously gifted us some leftover materials to start our fire and advised us on best practices! We recommend that anyone interested in having a weekend away in nature investigate the Treehouse camp!

The hike itself was fairly easy and can be finish under a hour. It is dog friendly, fairly shaded, and trail is well marked. You can sit down on the rock ledges and look at the incredible panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There is a small parking lot. It's a perfect spot for a quick getaway from the city, whether you're going for sunrise, sunset, or just a relaxing day outdoors. After can hit up Bear Chase Brewery close by.

Renovated in 1958, Gapland Hall is the park's visitors center and a museum for George Alfred Townsend ("Gath"), while Gapland Lodge has a museum depicting the battle at Crampton's Gap, which was fought just before the battle at Antietam. The camp host was very active throughout the day and gave great local recommendations. Negatives - you can't really see the river due to the grass and trees. It also says you can fish, which you can as long as you can make it down an incredibly steep embankment but there was not really a place to stand comfortably to fish and at least at site 5 there are quite a bit of rocks in the way. There was also a ton of little moths and gnats. Even with a fire the bugs made it unbearable to enjoy our time. Setting up and packing up was horrible. We understand bugs exist in nature but they were flying in our hair, mouth, nose, nothing worked to get rid of them. Also, the camp sites are just yards from a somewhat busy road. A few times people drove by and purposefully rev'd their engines. We could also hear a train in the distance going in the middle of the night. Maybe a different time of year would make all the difference regarding the annoying bugs but may is not it.

There is a nice picnic area near the parking area with some grills and benches. The walk along the path is beautiful with nice views of the Potomac river. Walking up the path you can access the WSSC water plant. Beautiful place for a nice stroll or a bike ride on the C&O path - family fun guaranteed!

C & O Canal Tow Path nearby? It is right off the tow path. Plus parking is onsite. Minutes away from the city to feel like you're in a remote area of nature, but close enough if you need to get back to the city in 30 minutes. The original Swain Lock is onsite, but also is currently under construction surrounded by a chain-link fence. It might be a little tricky, but you could kayak from here too. I am not sure what the regulations are on it, but it didn't look too difficult to do if you wanted to jump off from this site to get into the water.

After the constructions are completed, the park will start to request campers or day visitors to make reservations online during holidays and weekends visitors. Atmosphere: it's a large park filled with nature's love, trees, water, birds, logs, dirt paths, bugs, wildlife, fresh air and tables benches roads for visitors. Service: staff in the visitors' center are friendly and knowledgeable. Value: you cannot put a price tag on your love of nature and experience of outdoors. Parking: there is no issue to find parkings inside the park, just depending on how far you are willing to walk. Beautiful park, highly recommend.

I think families with young kids (or even new swimmers) really appreciate the "beach" area because the water level doesn't exceed 5.5 feet (swimming vests are encouraged). There are life guards present as well. There are spacious bathrooms available for use a short walk up from the water and have changing rooms in addition to shower areas as well. The bathrooms were clean as well as the changing rooms, but there was a lot of standing water in areas. I'd definitely recommend walking carefully. Bring a picnic and come early if you plan on getting a grill. Those were all taken even on the weekday we went. The river was relaxing, the views were gorgeous, and the whole day just felt easy and fun. A huge shoutout to Spider, our guide, who truly went above and beyond. Not only did he keep the energy high with great vibes and a friendly attitude, but he also made sure everyone was safe and accounted for throughout the float. We noticed him picking up trash along the way. So awesome to see someone taking care of the river and setting a great example. He really cared about both the people and the environment. If you're thinking about doing a tubing trip in Harpers Ferry, this is the place to go--and if you're lucky enough to get Spider as your guide, you're in for a great time!
