French toast
Jason M.

The place has a bit of a hipster feel on weekends - but during the week it seems to be mainly suits. Bonus if you're staying at the nearby Realm or Burbury hotel is that the free wifi works. I had the spelt pancakes the first time and they were delicious. The shaved coconut gave it a nice texture. The second time around I had French toast - which if I was a country would be my official dish. This was OK. The fact it was made with a dense spelt bread made it very heavy and become something of a hire to eat after a while - and the caramelised orange sauce is made with artificial sweetener - and you can tell. The coffee is pretty good - but if you're used to a decent strength you might want to opt for the double shot for added punch. I'm told the fresh start plate was good for what it was and the mushrooms tasty. But since they're all vegetables - I didn't dabble. You don't make friends with salad!

My office is nearby so I've actually been to Maple & Clove a few times. They have a hipster kind of vibe, but the restaurant is actually hipster-free on the weekdays. Monday-Friday the place is pretty quiet until lunchtime, then the work crowd comes in (lots of business meetings from what I can see) and all hell breaks loose. The first time I went was with some girlfriend's for brunch and later that same day for an interview. One of the girls got the eggs on toast with avocado, the other two got the portobello mushroom burger, and I got the smoked salmon, rocket + rye. Some of us got coffee. Since we got there a bit early we actually couldn't order the "after 11:30" dishes, but the waitress graciously offered to take our orders early and put them in the second the clock hit the right time. We had all of our food by 11:45. The portions are HUGE. At first I was thinking that the high prices were just for the environment, but no, they give you a whole lot of food. My dish came with a huge pile of smoked salmon and at least a whole avocado's worth of smashed avo. The bread was perfectly toasted and the rocket salad well dressed. The only thing I probably could've done without were the eggs (I added them on). Aside from being far too much for my already huge meal, they were a bit on the hard side -- I like a runny yolk. The other standout dish was the portobello burger. Ordinarily you'd think a portobello burger was a burger with a mushroom patty, right? Wrong. The buns are made out of whole mushrooms. It's quite a sight. It's stuffed with a variety of fresh veggies and come with a side of delicious carrot fries. At the interview I ordered a berry smoothie, it was fine. Nothing to write home about. Sorta a waste of money, but I think that's because I didn't order a good flavor. I saw plenty of people ordering two or three to-go. The next time I went, I was by myself and ordered the savoury spelt waffle. Despite it being a very busy day I still got my order in a short amount of time. It was another huge portion and I found myself struggling to finish it (I managed of course). The waffle itself was very interesting, not savoury, but vegetal. You get chunks of corn and zucchini on occasion. The eggs were still on the hard side, but forgivable. A definite recommend, a great brunch spot.

Came here cause I saw a good review from Good Food. We arrived at 10:30am and the place was…read morebustling. Canberrans have brunch earlier than sydneysiders it seems. We put our name down, got coffee and went for a walk. They called us 10 mins later with our table ready. I love it when business places care enough to give you a call back rather than making you wait there at their mercy. I ordered the juice of the day: Orange, lemon, and raspberry. Deliciously refreshing. I tasted a hint of ginger but I don't mind it. We ordered a croissant French toast that comes with lemon or orange mascarpone with a side of crispy bacon and avo dish with bacon. The French toast looked and tasted amazing. Just AMAZING! Avo dish consisted of rye toast with avo and labne, with quinoa tabbouleh and 63 degree egg, and a side of bacon. The rye bread was hard I suspect because it was gluten free. The quinoa tabbouleh was so refreshing, I felt healthy eating this dish, even with bacon. 63 degree egg wasn't really 63 degree. I was too hungry to care but next time I might ask for a real 63 degree. The coffee was good and the place was charming. Service was pretty good. Better than most places in Sydney. I will be back next time in in Canberra.

Awesome little cafe in Canberra... Awesome you say? In Canberra? Yes being a Sydney-sider I was…read moreseriously skeptical about this place, especially as all my Canberra friends swear by this place. But this place is awesome, and I will make sure that I stop by here any time I am back in Canberra. First and foremost is the coffee! Yep, I am a fan. My friend asked for a strongman cappuccino, and waitress quickly replied - all our coffee is strong. Let's just say this raised my expectations. And when the coffee came out, my expectations were meet. But what truly takes this place to greatness is the food. It is seriously good. I had the green eggs, and I wanted to wipe the plate clean. If you are a person who had a sweet tooth then I suggest ordering the French toast. Now this place is generally crowded, but even if you are not willing to wait and sit, get a take away coffee and some muffins. But either way this is a place you need to visit if you are in Canberra.
