Mushrooms on toast with a poached egg
    Nicky P.

I was visiting Canberra for work and didn't want hotel breakfast so ventured down to the lake and found this gem. Quite possibly the best mushrooms on toast I've ever had - a generous serve of a variety of mixed mushrooms, plus sautéed greens and a poached egg. Cool atmosphere and the coffee was good too. I'll definitely be returning when I'm next in town.

I love the sun and the Kingston Foreshore is an awesome place for a coffee and meal in the sun. Local Press is right down one end and while it doesn't have the best view at the moment thanks to the construction and lack of greenery, there are plenty of seats outside with umbrellas to protect from the Rays. It's a good thing too, as they do not take reservations- you need to add your name to the waiting list when you arrive. Fortunately, the service is quick so even with a lot of people waiting our party only had to wait 10-15 minutes. The staff were smiley and the energy is good. The menu is pretty good with a nice variety of sweet and savoury. My friends chose the green pea pancake and I had the green breaky plate. After having a savoury brunch yesterday at Haha Bar and the green nourish bowl at eighty/twenty a week ago I had high expectations. Plenty of veg/dairy free/gluten free options and variety on the menu. First off- I know it's on the menu, but hard boiled eggs? I should have asked for them poached but I wanted to see how it all came together. Who really goes out for hard boiled eggs? While the plate was delicious, with really nice spices- the spinach was my favourite aspect- I was a little perplexed by the proportions on the plate. There was a little pile of spinach, a good size pile of avocado... And three asparagus spears. About a third of the plate was crumbled feta and a third of it quinoa. I just feel that a 'green' plate should feature the greenery as a predominant feature. Not the bits on the side. My friends green pea pancake seemed far more complete, with the salsa flavours seeping into the savoury pancake. The big downer for me was the price. Three meals and two coffees came to nearly $90. I paid a dollar less for a coffee afterwards at the Walter Burley and it was twice as big and about the same coffee. It was a hard time deciding what to give this place as I was trying to decide between 3 and 4 stars. In the end the price is what drove it down and the reason I probably won't be back.

Fantastic location and great decor for a cool place to hang out, but lacking in other aspects! Food was very average and service took way too long considering we visited on a relatively quiet afternoon. My smoked ham sandwich was quite salty and bland, but thankfully the salad freshened it up a bit (although even that was drenched in olive oil!). Mum's Vietnamese style chicken salad was very refreshing and provided a relief to my greasy sandwich - however her dish was definitely on the pricier side. We bought two of their cold pressed juices (after all, the place is called the 'local press') and those were delicious - however again, 6 dollars for a small serving. Overall, a very cute place to hang out and catch up with friends. however, food is very average and quite pricey. They do advocate their use of organic and fresh produce, which can probably be held responsible for their higher prices.

This popular cafe was worth the short wait we. Food was interesting and very generous. If you are not too hungry I definitely recommend sharing one of the brunch dishes. We had a dukkah egg, kale, quinoa, fetta dish which was lovely and arrived quickly. Pay at the counter deal. Great location next to the lake. We had to wait abiut 10 min at 9.30 on a Sunday so I think getting there early is a good idea - I imagine the wait at 11am would be long!

French toast with berries, compote and marscopone was delicious (if a trifle sweet for me). Toast with poached eggs and avocado was cooked perfectly and served with the freshest lemon. Coffee was fine in terms of flavour (not "great"), but perfectly extracted and tricky soy microfoam spot on (unlike some more dedicated coffee joints around town). Best brunch all round. Also enjoyed the low-key funk/soul on the sound system today. Nice airy fit-out and decor, and plenty of outside seating

The smoked trout tortilla is a great, high protein way to start the day, while the sausage and egg brioche burger is a significant upgrade on what you could get at other *ahem* breakfast outlets, with crunchy and fresh tasting bread and a rather delicious onion marmalade. I haven't tried the lemon pancakes but they are on my to-try list. The meals are well presented and just right in portion size. The prices are reasonable in Canberra terms but beware the sides- I paid $3 for the mushrooms, which was literally one medium size mushroom. Be sure to make a reservation as its a popular place, and bring cash if you plan on splitting bills.
