But, the tikka masala didn't have much depth of flavor--it mostly tasted of tomato and not much else. That said, I'd still recommend this for Indian in the area as it's solid and a great value! To start with, we had the Pakora and Seekh Kebab. I don't normally like Pakora all that much... but this was delicious. The kebab was better still. Then we proceeded to a mixture of curries. The Lamb Nawabi was possibly the most delicious Indian dish I've ever eaten . The beef in the Beef Saagwala was a bit on the dry side but the spinach sauce was rich and succulent, whilst that old standby Bombay Aloo was well above average. In addition, the rice was beautifully prepared and we also enjoyed a sweet but mildly spicy Peshawari Naan. We're long standing fans of the Jewel but had been of the opinion that its best days were behind it. However, it now seems to be under new management and the food is seriously good. And this was our second delicious recent meal from there, so we know it wasn't a freak result. The servings were very generous and we'd obviously over-ordered. Not a problem as we'll enjoy the leftovers tonight! And whilst I'm on the subject of Indian food, might I suggest that those Kiwis who still insist on hogging just one dish whilst their companions hog their own, learn the error of their ways. That's NOT how you're meant to eat Indian food and you're missing out on the wonderful experience of mixing and matching your dishes.

The women who served us (and who seemed to be running the show) was also brilliant. She helped us decide what to order from the extensive and somewhat intimidating menu so that we got a good mix of flavours and she absolutely nailed it. She even offered to give us half serves we when couldn't decide between two curries - what a gem! The only negative about this place is the atmosphere. I find Victoria Park in itself to be bit lacklustre and in Ivillage the high ceilings and large dining don't do much to combat this. Regardless, the food so that good that I would happily return again and again!

This restaurant is a small, elegant jewel that serves extraordinary food. We shared prawn malabari curry and a lamb dish called Punjabi Saag Ghost. Both dishes were filled with exotic flavors. It all looks just too delicious. Recommended dishes include the Sweet Chilli Chicken and the Chicken Sajahani (another way I rate Indian restaurants is by the quality of meat they use and Oh Calcutta always use tender pieces of white meat--never chewy or gristly). Honestly can't rate this place high enough. The semi-high prices are completely worth it to get such a great, unique dining experience.
