My husband and I were strolling in Parnell Village and decided to have a late lunch. When we walked past Oh Calcutta, the rich smells of Indian spices drew us in. This restaurant is a small, elegant jewel that serves extraordinary food. We shared prawn malabari curry and a lamb dish called Punjabi Saag Ghost. Both dishes were filled with exotic flavors. It was served with a delicately flavored rice. We also ordered garlic naan which was fresh and soft. The service was lovely, attentive without being intrusive. The tables were all dressed with white tablecloths. The wine list was appropriate for the food served, and they also had a nice local beer selection. Widely regarded as the best Indian restaurant this side of...well India probably. This place is regularly voted one of Auckland's best restaurants, and for good reason. Oh Calcutta serves good ol' fashioned curries like nowhere else I've tried. No bright red Tikka Masala's and sloppy Kormas in this joint Everything about this place makes it great. The service is always impeccable, the seats are comfortable and the food consistently delightful. The only bad thing is that I can never choose what on the menu I want to eat. It all looks just too delicious. Recommended dishes include the Sweet Chilli Chicken and the Chicken Sajahani (another way I rate Indian restaurants is by the quality of meat they use and Oh Calcutta always use tender pieces of white meat--never chewy or gristly). Honestly can't rate this place high enough. The semi-high prices are completely worth it to get such a great, unique dining experience. read more

If you're planning a large group night out with lots of vegetarians in your group, this place is the winner! There's something for everyone. Our international friends always come back here every visit - they rate the saag paneer as the best in the world! It's also fun to watch the chef make the naans in the tandoor oven. Great for groups. I just had a perfectly delicious and delightful dinner here. The decor is tasteful, the wait staff are friendly and engaging, and the open-air ambiance couldn't have been better. I had the Butter Chicken, and it was so good I may just have to go back again next week - even though I'll be in a different part of Auckland. The restaurant is in the heart of Parnell, and worth the trip if you're not nearby. The spice level was perfect for me, as was the portion size. A high end Indian restaurant based in the heart of posh Parnell. I have eaten here twice and been very impressed with the food on both occasions. While Little India and Nite Spice do very good curry, this place is just a notch above them in terms of quality. There's lots of vegetarian options too which keeps my other half happy. There's a good atmosphere in the restaurant and it's quite lively on the weekends. The staff are very professional and they make sure all your needs are taken care of. The last time I was there, I got a chicken balti which was just right - not too spicy. Granted it's a little dearer than its rivals but when you taste the food, you realise it's worth it. I haven't been to Oh Calcutta in a while and just remembering the rich flavours makes me want to get my ass down to Parnell tonight for a good curry! read more

If you have managed to find a really good Indian takeaway shop, the food at Oh Culcutta might not blow your mind. It is good, it is very good, but there are so many cheap Indian places which produce delicious curries. I actually find it difficult to be a conisuer of Indian food, there are so many strong flavours that it can be hard to discern between different ingredients, and in my case, to really know the difference between a good curry and a really good curry. So I am willing to concede that the food at Oh Culcutta is superiour to your local takeaway shop and that I am too unsophisticated to tell. I have been to Oh Calcutta once and I really enjoyed it! Located near the bottom of Parnell rise, Oh Calcutta is tucked away next to Movenpick ice cream and ASB bank. For dinner my friend and I had the chicken tikka masala and the chicken shajahani as out mains, a lamb dish as our entre and two lovely glasses of Chardonnay to top off the evening. The food was fantastic and the service was great. With both indoor and outdoor seating there is something perfect for every season of the year. Inside is quite traditional which is nice to feel like you're experiencing the culture. I have been to quite a few Indian restaurants in my time and I feel for the price that you're paying this is quite expensive for what it is. However it was incredibly delicious and the service was great so I guess they can justify it that way. read more

To start with am not sure if this place would be rated as $$, rather they should be $$$ That said, we went on a Friday evening, and like you'd expect outta any good restaurant (without reservation) we were made to wait for 25 odd mins, besides we were told that the table we were seated was available only for 20 mins, after which we'll be seated elsewhere (in or outside was based on availability) Hmmm, to finish a meal in an Indian restaurant in 20 mins, assuming we'll be served at the 2nd minute we were seated is rather a tough ask. We still took up the challenge despite our 3 year old who gets super pumped at the sight of a samosa. I ordered a glass of Pinot Noir and began to enjoy the evening and had ordered samosas. Soon after the ordering a plate of papads arrived for the table and then in a short while samosas followed. With all that wait we really did not want any disappointment and we weren't. The entrees (Kadhai Paneer Masala and Malai Kofta) were quite well made. Mrs. Meena takes active part in greeting the guests and also gets instant feedbacks from customers on their experience which I personally found sweet. Although this place is definitely pricey than most others, it does (just touch) better in quality in comparison with other restaurants of the same kind. read more

This is a fantastic Indian set in Parnell Village in Auckland. We were staying in this area and were craving a good curry, someone reccommended this to us and I was pleased they did as now its in my top 3 Indians I have ever had. The restaurant itsself was very busy and we had to wait a short while for a table, but it was worth the wait. Its decorated quite contemporary and the staff are dressed sophisticated, but the food is traditional all the way. Everything tasted fresh and was extremely tasty, they have all the usual suspects of drinks and the price was no more than what you would pay in Engalnd. read more

I recently had dinner at Oh Calcutta on a Wednesday night with my girlfriend. In regard to the interior of the restaurant, it was warm and welcoming and as any lover of Indian food would testify, we were greeted with the great aroma of freshly prepared Indian cuisine. In relation to the food, we were both impressed with the level of high quality flavour and good presentation orchestrated in the food. I had butter chicken with an accompanying side of buttered Naan bread as well as a Mango Lassi. The butter chicken was creamy without being overpowering and included a burst of flavour which was heightened by the tender chicken meat which was perfectly balanced. One slight enhancement of the dish could have been the incorporation of more spice as even though I ordered it mild, for me it had minimal spice and lacked a bit of a kick. The Naan bread was particularly good as it was not too thick but still maintained a good texture. The Naan bread therefore, represented a point of difference between Oh Calcutta and other Indian restaurants we have been to. The Mango Lassi was flavourful and the taste of fresh mango was apparent. However, at times the Lassi felt too heavy and thick to drink comfortably. On a side note, it was evident that the food was freshly cooked as you were able to see the kitchen staff and chefs preparing the meals. In relation to the service, my girlfriend and I both felt the service was good as the waiters and waitresses did not pester us but remained attentive enough to make sure we were comfortable. The price of the meal was expensive but was appropriate for the type of upmarket restaurant that Oh Calcutta was. Overall, we had an enjoyable experience here which was accompanied by delicious food and a nice cultural atmosphere with great service. We will definitely be back again soon ! read more

Oh Calcutta, in trendy Parnell village, has been voted the best Indian restaurant in New Zealand in the past and, although it's the only one I tried, I could well believe it. The food really is superb (I know it's tame, but the butter chicken is divine), with plenty of interesting dishes on the menu to tempt you. The wine list is great too, but that's to be expected in New Zealand. Great service, good value, extremely pleasant setting -all in all, a great night out. read more

I went to oh Calcutta yesterday. I had high expectations. However I met with utter disappointment. We order chicken tikka as a starter. The chicken was not marinated and was cold. I hardly had half a piece and left it. The person serving us did not even ask why did I leave the entire portion. Then we ordered karahi paneer which was another disaster. It was made in artificial tomato purée and not fresh tomatoes and the paneer was put in it prior to two min before serving us. The paneer was cold, not defrosted. The people are insensitive to the customers. Pls go and learn cooking and customer sensitivity from other indian restaurants. The basic Indian values are not followed and you call ur self a good Indian restaurant. You dis regard the customers suggestions, options. The waiters serving you try to fleece u. They try and dupe you of the various hidden charges which are in fine print below the menu. Worst experience ever since I am in auckland. Worst Indian restaurant that I have visited. read more
