Came here with friends after discovering that Joshu-ya Brasserie has CLOSED! What :(?! Was hoping to discover my next go-to sushi restaurant in Berkeley, but sadly, I don't think Manpuku is it. Tip: If you are with a party of more than 2 people, go next door! It has the same menu & food but is more of a sit-down restaurant rather than an order/quick bite place. FOOD (3.5/5) Not bad, but not super memorable. I had the rainbow roll, which was pretty good. Other people ordered the swamp roll, spicy crunch roll, and a couple of other things that have escaped my mind. We all had the miso soup (not complimentary) which was OK. SERVICE (2.5/5) Service was friendly, but soooo slow! It took them 20+ minutes to collect our check when we put the credit card down, and I had to get up and physically hand it to someone to process it (probably would've taken way longer if we just waited for them to come back!). It wasn't very crowded at the time either so kind of strange. AMBIANCE (2.5/5) The whole restaurant was nice, but not super fancy - which is completely ok! The problem I had was with the bathroom. It is a single-stall bathroom and was sooo gross. The floor was completely disgusting leaving my shoes sooooo sticky!! I'll spare you the details, but this was nasty. OVERALL: I would recommend taking the sushi to-go. Not a bad place, but not a replacement for Joshu-ya's :( read more

Located in Elmwood, this small storefront has such amazing menu options and high quality service. I always get a sushi combo B (comes with sushi tempura roll, nigiri, and another roll, 2 miso soups). It's so worth it for the price and I definitely won't get my sushi anywhere else now :) read more

Casual place that seems to be themed as ... a garage? The menu says "Manpuku Garage" and the word "Garage" is spelled out on the wall in big metal letters. So that's the starting point. Positives here are that prices are good and that some things are pretty tasty -- e.g. the caterpillar roll was nicely done, with a good mix of fish and perfect avocado. Negatives are that the fish generally is of mediocre quality. The chirashi had very fishy yellowtail, earthy tasting (i.e. low quality farmed) salmon, and passable tuna. Strangely, the best part was a scallop, or at least I think that's what it was! Not eager to eat sushi again here anytime soon. This place has a every efficient system of seating and very quick orders which is great. It is this ideal for a meal which may be time sensitive. We tried the California rolls as appetisers 4/10. The ramen was ok-good and since I was dining with a Japanese person I was educated that the noodles were not the way they should be in authentic ramen as their were slightly rubbery. The overall broth and meat was quite tasty and light. Not a bad ramen but not the best and certainly not the worst. Hence 6/10. The prices are very affordable here for the neighbourhood it's located in. I would like to try more things and may visit again to get a better idea of the food here. read more

A great affordable sushi spot. I am always craving sushi, I used to get it every week when I lived in Alameda, so I'm really excited that I have a place walking distance from us now. Their roll selection seems more limited than other places but it has enough variety that its still a good enough selection. If you're in a rush they also have a grab and go area and you can buy some seaweed salad, ginger, kimchi, mochi... I love the sushi combo sets, they really fill me up and I usually can eat a lot of sushi, so I find them to be a good value, and they didn't skimp on wasabi in the nigiri pieces, I actually tasted it in comparison to other sushi restaurants that don't put any. I also love that they have an all salmon sashimi don - I'm addicted to it! This is my absolute favorite sushi place close to the UC Berkeley campus. Food: I'm a huge fan of their maki rolls- so so affordable on the college student budget and it's incredibly delicious! My personal favorites are the salmon avocado maki, deep fried California maki, and tuna maki. If you're in the mood for something fancier, I would go with the rainbow roll. It's one of their specialities and the raw fish is so fresh! It comes with salmon, yellow tail, tuna, and pairs with a thin slice of avocado. Your meal is usually served with a complimentary miso soup! They also have hot rice tea that's open to all guests and is on a self serving basis. Price & Portion: Manpuku's price is simply unbeatable for sushi. For around $4, you can get a 6-8 piece maki roll. I usually fill up on two! Their speciality rolls are around $10-13, which is quite standard but the portions are pretty generous. Service & ambiance: The cashier, waiters, and cooks are extremely friendly and welcoming. Manpuku is an overall pretty nice place to grab some Japanese food. Their menu has a wide variety of different foods including sushi, udon, ramen, bentos and more. Pricing overall is pretty reasonable as well, most dishes are around $10-13 which is not bad for the area or for Japanese. I usually get their sushi and have recently tried the red dragon roll. Pretty standard roll and with little kick from the jalapeño. I enjoyed it! I noticed a lot of people got the sushi combo and that looked quite yummy so I would probably come to try that sometime. I've been here a couple times and still enjoy it! Defiantly not the most amazing or special place you can find but still gets the spot. I wanted a couple of California Rolls, some Inari and maybe a few other tidbits. We were picking up odds and ends to supplement the food that we make at home. We walked up to the Grab and Go section and there were only a few things available. California Rolls, California Rolls with Tobiko, Wakame Salad and Edamame is what I remember seeing. I asked the order taker if there was any Inari available and she replied that they were about to make them. She asked me how many I wanted and told me that they were $1.75 each. The world is getting expensive! Yes, they are somewhat laborious to make but it's really only sushi rice stuffed inside deep fried tofu skins that have been poached in a mixture of soy sauce, dashi, sake and sugar. Anyway, she told me to take my California Rolls from the case and wait for the Inari. She rang me up and took my payment. I asked her to hold onto the Cal Rolls for me until we came back to pick everything up at once. We got our food and took it home. The Inari were great. I'll quit whining about the price until I'm done eating them. They were fat and full of rice and flavor. Chef had put just a hint of wasabi inside so it was a surprise to feel that familiar heat but not enough to clear your sinuses. The rice appeared to be of decent quality and hadn't been squished so hard as to burst the grains. The California Rolls were exactly what I had been craving. Way better than supermarket sushi and cheaper to boot. We ended up not ordering any other items. She wasn't hungry and if I had gotten started on Spicy Tuna or Spicy Salmon Rolls, it would have been an all night affair. We'll save our traditional sashimi orders for when the pandemic is over and we can sit inside a nice restaurant or I get frustrated and go out to buy a two or three pound chunk of fish and block and slice it myself. read more

I used to frequent here often, but not after today's meal. This 1-star review is for their ramen and how they 'handled' my issue: I used to always get 2 pork slices with my ramen. Always. It was their standard. Today, instead, I get shredded pork chunks that amount to less than one pork slice. I tried to address this with one of the waitresses, who just stands there absentmindedly as my boyfriend explains, and in the middle of our explanation, there's a splatter on our table and my shoe. We look up at the chefs across from us who are grinning and laughing, and she nervously apologizes and wipes the sauce off our table. What in the hell, is that how you deal with minor issues? You just toss sauces at them instead and laugh like little children behind your counter? FFS. I tell the waitress never mind, because obviously this ramen house does not understand professionalism or hospitality, and she walks away, dismissed like nothing ever happened. You can get a roll for a few bucks, a huge sushi combo for $22, and nigiri for under $2. Is the fish of super awesome quality? No...but it wasn't bad either. The sushi here is above buffet quality. Everything is made fresh to order. Order from the register, grab your tea and water, have a seat at the counter or one of the tables. We ordered a massive amount of food and paid a little over $30. I couldn't even finish what we ordered and had to take the rest to go. Sushi rice was done well. Miso soup fell short as it tasted like water. So they have 2 sides to this place. The left side is a restaurant. The right side is more of a cafe/to-go spot. I imagine this place getting super packed on the weekends. It's the perfect spot for college students looking for some cheap, decent sushi. Also great for the rest of us looking for a quick, no frills spot for a few basic rolls and nigiri. I've been to quite a few sushi restaurants in the EB and was disappointed while leaving with a high tab. This place was almost of the same quality for a 1/3 of the costs. Ramen Combo A - Choice of Shoyu or Miso ramen + 1/2 order cha-han (fried rice) and 6 gyoza. I selected the shoyu broth. The good: The steaming bowl of ramen came out topped with some blanched sprouts, menma (bamboo shoots), 1/2 a hardboiled egg, some nori (seaweed), mini tofu cubes, couple slices of fish cake, and 2 thick slices of chashu (pork). It was pretty good stuff. The broth was a little light for me, but not in a watered down kind of way. The noodles were chewy and nicely cooked. The chashu . . . ooohhh . . . tender and very flavorful porky goodness!!! Next time just give me a plate of that with some rice!! The bad and ugly: The gyoza were absolutely disgusting. The wrappers were gooey and slimey and were ready to fall apart just by waving a chopstick at them. There was a faint brown-ish section on each where it looked like they accidently dropped onto a frypan and were immediately removed. The filling was also devoid of flavor delivering the death blow to these soggy lumps. Even with some chili oil and ground red pepper added to the sauce provided, I could only bring myself to eat one and a half of the 6 provided before dumping the rest. Avoid at all costs!! The cha-han was bland as well, but at least it was edible and didn't invoke my gag reflex. 3+ stars for the ramen - great pork 2 stars for the fried rice 0 stars for the gyoza 2 stars overall read more

Service/Hospitality: Upon walking in I was greeted by one of the sushi chefs. He was polite and asked was my dining experience for there or togo. I responded accordingly and then a woman came and resumed the rest of the process. The staff seemed to flow well with one another, they were pretty attentive and that's a good thing IMO. Pretty decent service overall. Food/Cleanliness: The staff kept a pretty clean restaurant, I only sat in one of the two sides but from my observations everything was tidy and neatly placed. The restroom (Gender Neutral) was clean as well, I have to say this was a good thing in a establishment that seems to be a pretty steady spot. Now, on to my food for this visit. I browsed the menu for a bit and decided on the "Simba Roll" $10.95, it's basially a "Lion King Roll" in it's entirety. It honestly wasn't mind blowing, but it was good for the moment. I was indeed hungry so I devored it. I surprisingly expexted a bit more for some reason as far as taste or something more exotic on the menu seeing it's popularity in that area. It wasn't lackluster though....just a basic sushi experience for me. They did have self serve water and hot tea which I liked and honestly didn't mind having to get up and get myself. Overall: Manpuku is located in a college town (UC Berkeley area) and the menu I feel is cater toward the college crowd. Decent menu options and prices that I feel is friendly on a college persons wallet. I also can see this place also being a nice place for a date night or just being social with friends. In the past, I ordered a lot of ramen and curry katsu but I recently tried their sushi and am excited to try more items from the sushi menu! Walked in and ordered with the server/cashier before being seated. Orders will be served to your table. Came here with coworker trying something new away from the heart of Oakland. Picked a perfect spot for a refreshing lunch. We had a hand roll each and sushi deluxe totaling approximately $36. The sushi deluxe comes with California roll, spider roll, tuna roll, and several nigiri rolls. The rice in the roll was not gluey. Cucumber and sides go inside the roll were crunchy and reviving. Stopped by Manpuku for dinner this past Friday night. The Good: Manpuku is nestled in a nice block of Elmwood, a short bus ride from the UC Berkeley campus. The restaurant is quite small and near a variety of nice restaurants and dessert spots making it a good combo for a date night. We ordered 3 types of sushi rolls- the Tempura roll (Great), Aloha (Good), and the Simba roll (intriguing but not great) and a pair of salmon nigiri (solid). Overall, the sushi was good, but nothing amazing. The Aloha and Tempura rolls were very fairly priced, between 5-9$ and were enjoyable, while the Simba roll (covered in cheese) was an interesting choice, but ultimately not too enjoyable as the cheese made each bite very rich, overpowering the taste of the actual roll. The best thing about Manpuku, aside from location, is the fact that you can get affordable sit-down Japanese food for a bargain in the Bay Area. You can get a lot of food for $20 a person. The Bad: The Simba Roll was not my favorite, and being such a small and cheap restaurant it is probably best to stick with basic sushi orders. It's a nice place to have a sit-down nice dinner in Berkeley on a budget. Also, the pricing on nigiri was little odd. The price for one roll is listed but you are required to purchase in pairs. If you're looking for an upscale nice sushi dinner, Manpuku would probably feel mediocre. read more

I knew this place was cheap but I didn't care since I wanted sushi on a budget. Was a little confused walking into the restaurant but following the lead of the people in front of me, I finally realized you order at the register and then find your own seat. We ordered chirashi ($10), chicken teriyaki ($6), and a rainbow roll ($7). I'm not going to complain too much about the chirashi because you get what you paid for but the fish was not fresh and tasted like it had been previously frozen (what do I expect? nothing but I'm just throwing it out there). The chicken was a bit dry but very filling and the rainbow roll instead of having an assortment of different fish had tuna, salmon, hamachi, and avocado. No service except someone busing tables and delivering orders (listen for your order # being called). Everything is GIY (get it yourself). Utensils, napkins, water cups all at the front. We usually like sharing the Rainbow Roll and Tempura Roll, and their Tempura Udon is pretty solid. 5 months into living in the East Bay, and we have finally found our go-to affordable but delicious sushi spot! We like sushi a little too much to always indulge in the fancy sushi places, and sometimes a girl just needs a cheap sushi fix, ok? And this place delivers. We went in at around 8 pm on a Saturday and were seated immediately. The menu is extensive, but not overwhelming. They have some specialty rolls, maki, nigiri, and hand rolls (my favorite!!!). We only tried these items the first time, but they also have udon and soba noodle soups, stir fried noodles, and bento boxes that we will return for. We liked everything we ordered and would order again: -red dragon roll- spicy tuna on top, shrimp tempura and crab inside. Tasty roll. -shrimp tempura roll- really good with crunchy tempura flakes on top! -salmon avocado maki- so simple, yet so good. I have been to Manpuku multiple times before and the main attraction of the restaurant has always been the low price point. However, I ordered a couple basic rolls from there today and received absolutely rotten avocado in all my rolls. I noticed the strange taste during my meal and after looking inside the rolls found almost all the avocado pieces had large black marks and mushy grey portions. Feel sick now, definitely not coming back. I can see that they save on cost by sacrificing quality and customer safety. read more

Manpuku is a great spot to get your quick sushi fix. I live just down the street and love that I have the option of stopping by to grab a box of sushi to go, or call in just 15 minutes prior and get a made to order roll. They have tea in the entrance area for you to enjoy if you're waiting for a to go order. I've tried the eel cucumber maki, and it's a very good roll for the amount of money you pay. The specialty rolls are also good, up to standard with a typical sushi restaurant in the bay area. The oyakudon is just alright, but I have high standards after having one of the best at Sumika in Los Altos. But, if you're looking for something comforting and cooked, this could be a good option. Love this place for the prices! The quality you get for the price is pretty good, especially compared to other places in the area. I've tried the katsu, ramen, and rolls, and they are all decently delicious. Nowadays, I just get the salmon avocado roll or the Philadelphia roll. Manpuku is also in a pretty nice area, so taking a nice stroll in Elmwood after the meal is lovely. My partner and I came here because we heard it was affordable sushi. Obviously, like the others reviews have said, I did not come with an expectation this was going to be extremely good quality sushi. In terms of pick up-- it took around 40 minutes for 5 rolls. Other people ordered 6 and got their order faster. Meh. Parking sucks, and it's pretty trafficky. Back to what you want to know! even for an affordable sushi-- this was so mediocre. We ordered: 1.) rainbow roll (3/4) meh, nothing special. It was.. bland? How is that possible? 2.) salmon maki (3/4) decent? Small portion, mostly rice. 3.) poki maki (1/4): soooo unappetizing. Every bite I had fish bones I spat out. 4.) hot king roll (1/4) the Siracha tasted so bitter and gross 5.) deep fried spicy salmon: (0/4) WORST for last!! oh my goodness, this was burnt, bitter, we couldn't even finish it because it was so bad! I'd stay away from this one. Overall, I don't think I will be coming back for their rolls. Haven't tried their other menu options, will consider. It's not the most amazing/fancy sushi I have ever had but it is solidly good and for the price amazing! Best college sushi for the low you can get! I've been coming here for years and like my friend Kristen would say " it hits!"

The price is definitely right! I'd say you get what you pay for and just a little bit more :) I do love me some fast food, especially when I'm super hungry. Fast doesn't usually equate to good food, but here at Manpuku the sushi comes out quick and its mighty yummy to me! I thought grabbing a meal here with my bro at 8pm on a weeknight would be not be as crowded. We had to wait a bit for seating, even for the two of us. Surprisingly our 2 rolls (Aloha roll and caterpillar roll) came out pretty quick. But when we went back to the front to order more rolls, we were told that the kitchen was backed up and it would take ~30 mins for us to get them! :O Manpuku is delicious, but it wouldn't have been worth the wait. Caterpillar roll: presentation was so cute--it even had 2 pieces of seaweed sticking out of one end as "antennas." There was no skimping on the avocado, which I loooove. Aloha roll: salmon tasted very fresh on top of the California rolls. The salmon had a good "bite" to it. However, miso ramen was also kind of bland when I ordered the ramen combo a couple weeks ago. I think I'll stick with the shoyu ramen next time. Or udon. Overall, I'd still come for a sushi fix since it's still pretty cheap. I hope their service is better next time. read more

One if my favorite sushi places. Quality has gone up over the last 5+ years, very tasty and cheap (hard to beat). I love the new winter ramen. Also a ton of veggie sushi roll options. There's free hot tea set up near the water, have some! The seating is done in order of arriving and there aren't many tables, be prepared to possibly order to go. read more
