Axe throwing as a team social event???
I was skeptical when my work wanted to go there for a team social event. I was like "How can throwing axes be any fun?", "Would the female co-workers enjoy this?" and "How did OH&S approved this?".
It was actually suggested by a female co-worker and it turned out to be a lot of fun.
There's three double throwing ranges in there and because of the size of our group, we had three tournaments going on simultaneously.
You get paired with your opponent and get 5 throws per match (and either 2 or 3 matches per game - first to win 2 games wins). On the target board, there's three rings and you get points when great then 50% of your axe's blade is within the ring. It's 1 point of the outer most ring, 3 points for the middle ring and 5 points for the center circle. After the fourth throw, the scorer would call out the score and the person in the lead gets to throw first, then the next person gets to throw. However this thrower, can call "snatch" if he wants to try to score 7 points (he might need to depending on how fan he is trailing behind). There's 2 red dots on the top right and left of the target board and they are about the size of the circle you make when you join your thumb and index finger together. To make it even more challenging, you need to call out right or left "snatch". Also if a snatch is called and you lend within any of the circles or the center, you don't get any points for that. And should there be a draw, then it goes to sudden death, but you use a much larger/longer axe instead.
The loser of the game will join the loser wave, so a player is only out of the tournament once they have lost two games (once in the normal wave and again in the loser wave).
In the finals, the winner of the normal wave will play with the winner of the loser wave to determine the champion. However if the winner of the normal wave loses, then they will play another game (as you need to lose twice to be out of the tournament)
The champion is then able to sit on The Iron "Thrown"....
It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be and i especially love the interior decor. There's also a large screen showing interesting videos of funny Japanese commercial and videos of failarmy to keep you entertain while waiting for your turn to throw. read more
