All utensils and plates and water are serve-yourself near the door. At lunchtime on a warm Saturday in spring they had a steady trickle of guests coming in. The person who took our order thanked us for supporting them. Food was quick and very fresh. I had 1/2 tabbouleh salad and za'atar French fries. The tabbouleh is more heavy on the greens than the grain which was a refreshing change to me. It was dressed in a bright, fresh lemony dressing. More than I could eat in one sitting. The French fries are maybe dipped in batter and fried. I'm not sure. But they are super crispy on the outside and fluffy inside - delicious. The ambiance is casual with various TV screens showing different shows and Middle Eastern music playing on the speakers. The interior is simple but warm and inviting with minimal but fun decor. While the prices are a bit higher than I would have expected, I could see myself returning for dinner.

They had plenty of options, and since I had been wanting lamb for a while, I ordered the lamb kebab entrée. It came with pita, rice, a side salad, and roasted vegetables. Mine only had onions and peppers, but everything tasted really good. Their house-made hot sauce was absolutely delicious! Before leaving, I ordered food for my mother and grabbed a few desserts, including banana cream cheesecake and pistachio cream cake. They accidentally gave me a chocolate dessert instead of the banana cream, but it was okay. Everyone was pleasant, helpful, and informative, which is something I really value at a restaurant. There is plenty of seating both inside and outside, plus a more private area toward the back where I sat because I had homework to complete. Overall, I enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and service. I will definitely be coming back!

We went for lunch and the cool, welcoming interior on a hot summer day set the stage for a delicious meal. We started with the combination appetizer and their wonderful bread. Every item on the plate looked as good as it tasted. I particularly loved the cold eggplant and tomato dish. I had the blackened tilapia with rice and salad. Delicious! I would certainly order this again. My fellow diners had the shrimp and the lamb shank, a weekend special. I tasted both and loved both! I took half of my meal home because the appetizer was so substantial and my tilapia was a very generous serving. The wait staff were warm and friendly, but not intrusive, making Cafe Istanbul a very comfortable place. So glad we circled back to an old favorite! Menu last weekend,

I ordered the chicken shwarma for my main dish and it was well seasoned on top of yellow rice. I also ordered the mango nectar which was too sweet so i diluted it with water. We'd walked a way to get there, and didn't have a backup plan...so we went to the electric kiosk and ordered. We decided to share and got an order of lamb chops, a large feta salad, an order of pita and drinks. The waitress, Braxton came over and brought us water as we waited for our food. This absolutely charming and intelligent young woman was extraordinarily charismatic. We told her we were from Bloomington, Indiana. It turns out she's an Indiana University grad, and a middle school English teacher...which my wife was! The food was superb! The lamb chops were served on a large bed of basmati rice, and were delicious. The salad with tahini dressing was large and fresh and the ingredients were balanced. The pita was homemade and amazing. I checked out the market and they had a wide variety of middle eastern foods and baked items. I noticed that they had THE LARGEST selection of Jeni's ice cream I've ever seen. There were well over a dozen different flavors. Had I not been so full from dinner, I'd have tried the "Lemon Bar" flavor. We may go back tomorrow. They had a wine bar and were conducting a tasting while we were there. We wisely skipped it as we had to walk back to our hotel.

It's nice to get more food, but we ordered way more food than we needed. The website also says a small family plate feeds 3-4 people, but it easily would have fed 6 of us without the extra stuff we ordered. Logistics aside, the food was delicious. I loved all of the kebabs and dips. The adana, doner, and lamb chops were my favorite kebabs. The spicy feta, hummus, and labne were my favorite dips.
