Monday at Rose Marie's with Penne Pomodore
Mike L.

Mangia hit a nostalgic nerve. The food instantly took me back to growing up with my South Philly family and big Sunday gravy around the table. Solid portions, quality ingredients, and prices that won't drain your wallet. Service was great and the ambiance is on point. Bonus: my young boys loved watching the cooks work in the kitchen. That alone made the experience memorable. The only knock was consistency. One person in our party was disappointed with the sausage in the Sunday at Rose Marie's. It was noticeably tougher than the sausage on my sandwich. That said, this place is absolutely worth returning to, and I'd recommend giving it a try.

MONDAY AT ROSE MARIE'S Short Rib. Not the best look.

We went here for the first time and had the Monday at Rosemarie's dinner which we split because it was huge. We actually ended up taking some home. I love the Bucatini and overall it was pretty solid, except for the weird look of the short rib. Not sure why they diced it up like that instead of leaving it shredded, but it was a definite turn off for my wife. The bread was decent as was the caeser salad and the soup. Service was great and all the weight staff has uniforms and was very attentive. Not a big fan of the surcharge for using my credit card. Next time I'll bring cash. This place is definitely worth going back to.

Rigatoni with vodka sauce and sausage. Delicious!!

A group of 8 old curmudgons visited this restaurant for the first time. It was previously a Mexican restaurant. We were surprised with the transformation to a bright, clean and delightfully decorated Italian restaurant. The servers were pleasant and very friendly. Tried the Calamari. It was done perfectly although the arabita dipping sauce was a bit too spicy for me, next time I'll ask for straight marinara. I ordered the rigatoni with vodka sauce and sausage. The entrée came with a well done Ceasars salad. The pasta was well prepared with just the right al dente. Could have used a little more sauce but very good. The portions are offered in half or full sizes. The half size will be enough for all but the most hearty diner. Several of our group got their chicken parm left overs in to go boxes. One negative would be the small amount of bread offered with the meals. A little strange for an Italian joint. Asking for more bread resulted in a $3 upcharge! All in all I found Mangia to be a delightful restaurant with great food and good service. I will be going back to try more foods and their desserts, that we were too full to try on this visit. Give this place a try, I think you will like it.

Meatballs

If homestyle Italian cuisine is your thing, Mangia serves up a delicious dish! You get what you pay for here. Fantastic prices for a great selection of Italian food that this town so desperately needed. Got to try this place before it opened, and couldn't have had a better time (the current lack of liquor license not withstanding). Their sauce is fantastic and the service is warm and friendly. The meatballs were my favorite. Great for families or a date night on the town.

Home style Italian food for a great price. This place is super cute and right next door to Hopscotch Coffee on Millwood ave. Service was excellent and the food was well prepared and presented. I think of myself as a sort of aficionado of Italian cuisine and while this is not the best Italian food I have ever had, it is very solid. Pasta was cooked perfectly, meatballs were a delight, and that focaccia was perfecto! I will most definitely be back!

Also, credit card charge is not noted anywhere. With local and state taxes and that charge, add around 15.3% to bill.

Best Italian in the area, hands down. Grew up in a heavy Italian area, not the SV, and this is the closest I've gotten to food from home.

Food, service, ambiance...all sheer perfection. Ashlee is one of the best servers I've had. And the owner and chef is simple the best.

I found pappardelle at Dal Grano's once and that says all you need to know. Papardelle are wide,…read moresoft, flat pasta noodles that I first had in Rome decades ago. Growing up Italian stateside, I never knew about this light, wavy pasta dish. So pappardelle pasta is like some rare delicacy and I love it. This pasta dish is not easy to find unless it has been popularized in the Italian dining scene, recently. How can I explain this pasta? Papardelle are not thick like butter noodles, but instead they are thin yet wide. And at Dal Grano's, they must be experienced to be savoured. Do call ahead, because they might just have them made. Dal Grano's is a neighborhood place. We love how when you are dining, they actually talk to you and are friendly. There are a few other places around Mclean proper which I wish were more overtly warm and hospitable, in this way. All of Dal Grano's pasta is homemade and delicious. It's definitely great for carryout pasta or a diner-style environment with a homemade pasta lunch or dinner. I don't think they deliver or work with any of the delivery services. You just call and pickup. The butternut squash ravioli is tender and flavorful. We have probably have gotten different versions of their ravioli every time. Outside of the papardelle, I'm all in for their rich squid ink pasta when it's made. I don't go there enough to know if it's always available. They have over 50 homemade pasta combinations to choose from and a big freezer case of food to take home. My biggest issue with Dal Grano's is when I see all of the pastas in the serving bowls presented to order and cook, I want to buy them all at once. I know it sounds tacky, but they make me yearn for a pasta buffet there just so that I can taste all of the variations. Alas, if we were in town more we'd just need to go more often to taste all of their selection. There's only one other restaurant that does Italian this well and it's around 15 minutes away in Falls Church. But even that fabulous Italian restaurant does not compare with the amount and selection of homemade pastas at Dal Grano's.

Our server was extremely friendly and helpful. They offer most of the traditional Italian dishes but the main highlight is their build your own pasta dish with a variety of pasta shapes to choose from followed by protein and sauce options. I went with the All'amatriciana with sausage mixed in, and wow is all I can say. My plate was completely empty in short time it was that good. I would definitely come back here multiple times to try the different options.

The cream tomato sauce hit the mark without being too overbearing of either. The spaghetti dish was fantastic. The olive oil, garlic, and red pepper combo hit the spot. Seems basic, but executed perfectly. I was hoping for more homemade noodles, but it was basic boxed spaghetti- or so it tasted. Both portions were extremely generous. The only thing that would elevate the dishes would be some meat like pancetta or pork as a meat and to add some texture. The meatballs offered were in marinara and wouldn't go. I did get a chicken tender but that was definitely not homemade.
