I feel like it is always hard to look for a new stylist because it can be hard to know where to start. Sometimes referrals from friends are great, but because the Charlotte area is large, the last thing I want is a commute for getting my hair done, that process always takes enough time! I went back to yelp again, and found Southern Roots. While they only had a few reviews, they were all great. I called in and Tiffany actually answered, but had to book me with Donna because of the day I was requesting. She was very kind in trying to set this up for me. When I went to Donna the first time, I asked for my usual cut, a little off the bottom and plenty off the layers, as I love to see my layers. I also asked for my hair color to pop. Unfortunately this is where things went wrong. Everyone can interpret their definitions differently, and my thought of pop was different than Donna's. That is my fault for not going further into likes/dislikes. My hair is naturally brown and she added in blonde highlights that were way too bright and blonde for me. I hated how I looked and hated the contrast. While I did receive compliments on my new look, I did not like the shade of blonde in my hair. However, I loved the cut. I finally received a cut that I had been asking for! As I stated before, I love to see my layers, so I always ask for much shorter layers, and for some reason, other hair stylists only seem to go about an inch above my longer length even though I always ask for much more. Since I got the cut and realized my communication was poor on my likes/dislikes and what I wanted out of color, I decided to go back. At the second appointment, I told Donna I hated the color from the first visit. She was very kind in taking my hatred and even suggested I should have come back, but I really just wanted to try to get used to it, maybe I would eventually like it. I found pictures off the internet of colors that I liked and had them saved for this second visit. I showed Donna a couple, and she picked right up on the colors! She added in some red to my brown while darkening up the blonde from the last visit. My color was spot on! And to me, adding in the red and darker blonde, was my pop. It looked great, along with the cut! I just went back this weekend for a third visit. I confirmed my love for the looks from the second visit and we updated the red and brown this time. After we finished with the cut/color, I pointed out what I loved so that she could make notes on what to do and how to update the different colors for next time. My hair is naturally curly, but I probably style my hair curly half the week and half the week I style it straight. I love that Donna is willing to take the time to style it straight so that I can see the layers and see the cut, that way I can ask for a little bit more if needed. I am happy to say and excited to say, I have found my new stylist! I think it is great someone is willing to listen to my critiques and wants me to be happy. While I can't say anything about Tiffany here, I can say Donna is great and I would recommend her easily!

I left cash and a tip on a hair color job that nearly three long weeks later is so much darker than I am comfortable with that I still can't believe what I see in the mirror. She missed the mark on me. I'm not playful with my hair color... I wasn't trying to play with it. I loved it - even in its faded, sad post crisis condition it was "my" color. What I have now is a deep dark strange head that even my young children still can't figure out. My eye brow pencil is too light for my new Tiffany given color. Be warned and fore-armed about paying cash for such services. Tiffany apologetically and frankly unapologetic business manner won't do anything for me to adjust or fix this color "because of my hair history." So now my budget is spent and there isn't anything that can be done... I still look like "crisis hell". ....I'm just sad, mad, and feel entirely unlike myself - - mismatched to this dark mop -- just ugly.

I had previously gone to another salon for "balayage" but ended up with something very different and not at all what I had wanted. Lauren listened, was kind and comforting, and we discussed an action plan for addressing my hair. She hadn't planned on doing anything to my hair that day, just consulting, but after some discussion she did a quick toner and it made a huge difference in the overall color and tone of my hair. I'll be going back in a few weeks to have the rest of the style and color fixed. I am so grateful to her. She LISTENS and asks lots of great questions, and you can tell she truly cares about her clients and wants them to be happy. Truly above and beyond. I'm very happy and can't wait to go back in a few weeks.

Lauren is by far the kindest most transparent and trustworthy stylist I have ever met. From the start she was quick at replying and her communication by far unmatched. I was impressed with her transparency in every aspect. She was honest about both her ability to achieve what I wanted along with her recommendations for me given my current hair health. For Lauren, keeping my hair healthy and reaching my hair goals were at the top of her priority. I never once felt uncomfortable, and the entire appointment felt super personable. She was also super honest about the price and what upkeep would look like- and that is a conversation that can sometimes feel taboo but not with her. She is such an amazing stylist and her ability to make you feel welcomed and clear minded with what to expect is by far the best I've ever experienced. I will most definitely be coming back and I look forward to seeing her as my future stylist because that is just how good she is. The vibes were TOP TIER and I am super happy with how my hair came out! I went in looking for a balayage and wanted to go blonde but after a very thorough consultation with Lauren (with complimentary snacks) we decided on a more brownish look since I had lots of box dye and she don't want to fry my hair. Of course she provided a range of options if I did want to go blonde that same day, such as adding highlights or doing a baby foil (which she was so kind to explain what everything meant and how that would look maintenance wise along with price!). In the end I decided to just follow up later on to go lighter! The whole time she does not at all make you feel pressured or uncomfortable or tries to up-sale anything- she even told me that if I loved it and didn't want to do another appointment that that was totally okay too- there was absolutely no pressure! For my personal hair I ended up paying around $290 and considering the entire appointment and the thoroughness of it, I felt the price was more than justified! She is wonderful and if you're scared of trying a new stylist like I was please consider Lauren!!!

It's not uncommon for my hair to be fresh out of the shower, drying in an awkward, wet messy bun, in public. I went to Platinum for the first time a few weeks ago, as my stylist (from my other reviews!) has recently joined their staff. Samantha is wonderful, you read about her in my previous hair review. She listens to you, and will do exactly as you want - with insight and recommendations if you want them. Because I am a very low maintenance hair doer, but very frequent visitor to Pinterest, I wanted those chunky big highlights. I told Samantha what I wanted, and that I had been on Pinterest, and we talked about what would really work for me and my lifestyle. Turns out, chunky pretty highlights take lots of upkeep and work - more than 2 hair visits a year (imagine that!). So we went with lower tones and less upkeep. The girl knows me better than I know myself! Love the cut, I go in to see her about twice a year - not the recommended every six weeks. But I tell Samantha what I'm thinking, we talk about it and then I'm always happy with the result!! The shop is really pretty. The staff is nice, and it smells good in there! Never go to a hair salon that doesn't smell good. I will definitely be coming back here to talk about my hair with Samantha. She was also helpful in talking me through a few hair styles that I could do quickly, but that look more grown-up than just a hair elastic and a pony tail. Schedule an appointment! Ask for my girl!

$398 for highlights and root smudge??…read more Very disappointed in the amount I was charged today for highlights and root smudge and feel it was quite exorbitant for this area and what I received was not at all at any level to justify. My appointment was for full highlights and root smudge. I consider this salon nice but not high end and though the person who did my service is very sweet and did a great job the previous time I visited, they are more junior level. When I asked for the breakdown of my charges, they had a hard time providing them but said I was charged for a haircut, highlights, toner and root color. I did not get a haircut so I said oh, I didn't get a haircut so you need to take that off so they said they would refund $30 which is odd because a haircut is $60. After asked for a call from the manager who wasn't available while I was there, I found that they charged foil highlights ($265), a toner ($45) and $76 for a little root cover at the bowl. I have barely shoulder length hair. The manager wasn't clear on what was charged either so she was going to give me a call back but never did. My total bill with the refund was $365. What's worse is that I have to have it redone. The highlights were not allowed to lift enough and the toner was nothing like what i like or looks good on me. The roots are not dark enough and turned out looking like 'hot roots', nothing like the root smudge I had previously. I hate this happened. This is simply unaffordable even if it were a great color but it was nothing like what I had done before, which I what i asked for when I sat down. Also, I would have probably split up the service or possibly changed to partial highlight had I known the toner wasn't included with the highlight service. After all, you generally don't have one without the other. And, I would've decided to go elsewhere altogether if I had known they charge $76 for root coverage at the bowl with your highlight.
