I was on my way South at this point and heading for the start of the Skyline Drive down in Virginia, keeping an eye out for a place to stop for lunch. I like to eat at non-chain restaurants when I am traveling, as it gives me a taste of the local area rather than corporate America, which is the same everywhere. Hence when I came across Kelly's Scenic View Restaurant, I took the bait and went for it. In the parking lot there were a number of vehicles, and many of them were work vehicles of people that were stopping on their lunch breaks for a bite to eat, which is usually a good sign that the food is decent. I was wrong. Let's go through the food first. It really doesn't get any more basic than the menu they have here. I went for a cheeseburger with some fries, and it was as basic as you could get... bit of lettuce, tomato, and onion on a bun and some condiments on the side. Fries were out of the freezer. Looking around at what everyone else was eating, it was of the same quality... prepared foods straight from SysCo. Frankly, I would have been fine with the food if the restaurant actually provided what it was promoting in its own name... a scenic view. While the valley this restaurant overlooks is quite scenic, the fact of the matter is that when you get inside the restaurant, there is no view. You are stuck in a room with windows facing the roadside away from the valley, and those are covered up not really even letting in any natural light. There apparently is one window looking out to the valley, overlooking a propane tank, but I never saw it... no clue where it was. The interior reminds me of eateries out of the 1960's, and frankly the food matches this memory. There is so much potential here with the view, but it looks like that will likely require new leadership to actually happen.

Our bartender was fantastic--friendly, attentive, incredibly welcoming, and even helped us get connected to Wi-Fi while we were there. Just genuinely excellent hospitality from beginning to end. The food was great too. I ordered the Hawaiian pulled pork sandwich, which had pulled pork, spicy pineapple coleslaw, chipotle aioli, and goat cheese. The goat cheese especially made the sandwich for me, and I would have happily taken even more of the slaw and sauce. My husband had the smashburger and said it was absolutely worth the $18 price tag. And the fries! Perfectly crispy, and the balsamic ketchup was ridiculously addictive. We finished with the cinnamon-sugar fried ice cream cannolis, and they disappeared in about five minutes. Crunchy cinnamon-sugar shell, cold ice cream, chocolate, whipped cream, and strawberries--and even the strawberries were delicious, not just decoration. We decided to eat downstairs in the bar area. It had ha nice cozy low key atmosphere. Which was nice. We also felt like we were well taken care of there. Below the Union Hotel is a tavern called Mona's which is connected and an addition to The Union Hotel restaurant/12 room hotel. There's parking along the Main Street, as well as lots of spots in the back of the building. You can enter from the main entrance of the hotel and take the elevator down or you can head down the steps in the back to enter. Doesn't matter which way, just get here. We were absolutely blown away by the quality, portions, flavor profiles, and service in this little gem. We sat at the bar and were greeted immediately by a super friendly bartender named Matt. He was very attentive, friendly and welcoming. He was always checking up on us and making sure that we were always good. Service was fabulous. There's a timeline of the history of this historic building on the back of the menu. We ordered two drinks. One was an apple cider margarita and the other was a strawberry gin fizz concoction that was amazing. Both of these drinks were delicious. If we weren't driving and staying in the actual hotel above this tavern, we would have tried several other ones on the menu. Lots of creative choices that looked to be tasty based on the mix of ingredients. For the food - the menu was enticing and extensive. Lots of creative things happening here. The app we decided on was the Parmesan crusted Brussels and boy did they not disappoint. Absolutely delicious. We opted for The French Dip with fries and some magical au jus and a Union Smash burger with fries for our meals. Both are highly recommended!!! The burger was served on this delicious cloud of brioche bun and stacked high with two patties (perfectly cooked), pickles, dijonaose, and cheese. The French Dip had the most magnificent crusty roll and tender meat. Then there are these amazing Parmesan parsley fries that are perfectly cooked and served hot! We could have eaten an entire plate of these. To go boxes were needed. Big portions. We couldn't fit dessert! The bill does come with some tasty Andes mints. Prices here are extremely reasonable!
