Manchester Ice & Event Centre - Skating Rinks Near Me - McCall, Idaho

This is a solid rink. The ice is cold (only people that skate much will understand that weird comment), the view from the stands and the bench are epic (mountains and water), and the fact that drinking is allowed and probably encouraged, gives this place a few extra brownie points. The nostalgia with this place is the locker rooms are extremely run down and don't accommodate well for the female hockey player. There is a "woman's only" locker room but changing with your co-ed team is way more fun. These locker rooms feel like my middle school locker room which was basically in a dungeon and from the 60's. I do appreciate character though and strangely I am fond of that rundown locker room memory. From the naked public skater eye, this is a great establishment to have in such a small town. From a hockey eye, this is still a great establishment, upgrades could be thought about though. I love rinks in general so this one is worth a visit when you make it to town! I brought my daughter here for public skating yesterday which I deeply regret. The ice rink General Manager, John, screamed at my daughter to stay off of a carpeted area adjacent to the rink which appeared to be chairs where skaters could rest. I suggested that he put up signage or rope off the area and he proceeded to yell at me and stomp away into the back office, where he made a very aggressive announcement over the loudspeaker. The crowd gathered around was all horrified by his behavior toward my daughter and even suggested that we call the police. Individuals with anger management issues should NOT be working in venues where they can traumatize children. read more

I gave this rink 2 stars solely because it is a fun facility that offers fun activities and a good environment. We arrived to ice skate around 240 according to the 12-4 pm public skate schedule, thinking we had over an hour with our kids. we were kicked off the rink by 315 by the man cleaning the ice yelling at us in a unkind, annoyed manner. As we returned our skates, I asked in the kindest most patient way, "I'm wondering why we were asked to stop skating at 315 when the website and schedule said 4?" To which the woman who is the owner legit yelled at me, "because I said so! it's new years and I wanna go home!" I was incredibly taken aback by her reaction to my reasonable concern. if it's a holiday and you don't wanna be open normal hours, you can at least update your calendar and tell people when they're paying the hours changed so they can decide for themselves if it's worth their time. despite ones stress they should never yell at an innocent customer who paid full price for 30 minutes and just be thankful for their business. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt that this was out of character for them but it was my unfortunate experience that left me feeling disappointed. As an Idaho native I hope for more for our local spots! read more

I just now noticed something funny: why is it spelled "centre" the British way, and not "center" the American way? The mystery deepens...

I took my family here for the ice bumper tubes and possibly ice skating for the 1st time in our lives. We paid our fee and waited for our session to come up. What I thought was a bumper tube for photos, I sat my daughter on it for a photo and get YELLED at by the manager to get my daughter of the bumper tube because it was broken. I immediately began to remove my daughter and I apologized. During the process of removing my daughter again he SCREAMS at me, "IT WAS ALREADY BROKEN AND NOW YOU PROBABLY BROKE IT EVEN MORE". Once I finally removed my daughter he still continued to BERATE my family and me by saying, "DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN"! He then goes to the cashier behind the counter and he tells her in a condescending tone, (in front of customers) she has to watch what all customers are doing at all times. So of course after the way we were treated we naturally asked for our money back so we could leave. Even the cashier felt so embarrassed about the situation that she almost cried as she was returning our money. After the berating and embarrassed he the manager put us through, he places a sign on the tube, "Broken Do Not Touch". If I could give this place a zero stars I would. read more

Once a year our large extended family camps at Ponderosa State Park. In August of 2016 we decided to go ice-skating instead of our usual boating, swimming, and hiking. We called the rink to inquire about times and pricing and decided on the afternoon slot as indicated by the automated phone message. About 25 of us gathered at the rink (no small feet organizing this group) and upon our arrival we were informed that it was closed for a private practice/event. The two grown men at the counter were dismissive and rude to us, both looked like two millennials who couldn't look up from their phones to converse in a friendly or engaging manner. I informed them that their automated phone message indicated they were open for a skating to which he replied that couldn't change the message and that I was being rude and he didn't want us there anyways. I'd hate to think it was because of my brother's two adoptive children that are African American by my side but I cannot think of any reason for this man's hostility and lack of hospitality. I informed him of what kind of person I thought he was; all the while he was still on his phone. I can guarantee we will never patronize this business. read more

The rink itself was very nice, and the staff was friendly and helpful. However, the local teams were incredibly rude and made the whole charity event feel cold, inhospitable, and vicious. We were trying to raise money for cancer awareness, and drove to the event from 7 hours away in Montana, and the McCall teams were name-calling, making fun of our C-league players, and overall being extremely unsportsmanlike. They refused to pay the $5 for penalties (again, this was going to charity), and used A-league players in their own C-league event to chalk up a couple of very cheap wins. Let me reiterate- I LOVED the rink and would happily come back if the teams are taught how to behave in a sportsmanlike manner and to respect their visitors (who paid $75 each to play) a LOT more. read more

As a McCall resident, I can't imagine what the town would be without the Manchester Ice Rink. It is the community center of the area. The rink was built entirely with private funds through the efforts of Sabela family. On any given day, go to the rink and you will see 5 to 70 year old males and females playing hockey as well as figure skating, curling and learn to skate programs. And this is in a town of 2500 permanent residents. Everyday includes free skating time for visitors at a very reasonable price. And everyone is friendly! I don't understand the person complaining about the architecture. Most ice rinks are metal barns. Every visitor I have talked to has commented on the beauty of the rink especially with the setting overlooking the lake. The comment about the name of the rink is uncalled for. The rink is named after a family, not an individual. The rink would not exist without the Manchester family providing the money to get the project going. McCall is a better place because of Doug Manchester and his family. read more

I am a local who practically lives at this rink. This jerk from Montanta doesn't have a clue. This is a world class facility with an NHL size rink that is the home rink for Idaho Jr Steelheads Triple A hockey team. McCall is a resort town in the mountains on Payette Lake. One entire wall of the rink is glass and has a gorgeous view of the mountains and the lake outside (it's right across the street). I played in a hockey game where we actually stopped the game and had a moment of silence to enjoy the view because it was so gorgeous. I have skated in other rinks all over the West and it is one of the nicest facilities I have been in. If the locker rooms were larger it would outrank everywhere I have ever skated including the Olympic facility in Park City. And yes it is named after someone...because they donated generously to the construction of the facility. The Sabala family spear-headed the fundraising that allowed this to be built in our tiny town of 2,500 people (not counting visitors of course!) We in the community feel completely blessed that these people built this rink which has been a huge addition in our very outdoor lifestyle oriented town. I didn't start skating or playing hockey until I was 40 years old but I am completely addicted....after five years I had to give back and now coach the girl's team which I absolutely love doing. The rink offers figure skating, hockey, learn-to-skate programs and of course public skating and also hosts many world class events including World Masters Nordic Skiing (ice is down of course)and the tense rivalry of the BSU and U of I hockey teams. The food in the cafe is also some of the best in town for the price point. It is definitely worth a visit! See you on the ice... read more
