It's pure coleslaw, just like I like it, without sauce or mayonnaise. They have an extensive list of milkshake flavors, which I'm told are amazing. A few are seasonal. My continuous dieting has kept me from trying them. But when December arrives I may splurge calories on an Egg Nog Shake. Anytime I'm in the area, or close to the area I'll stop and buy enough for two meals. Each sandwich is wrapped in a thick heavy aluminum foil type wrap, which keeps the bun soft in the refrigerator. The coleslaw is best for me on the side. But there's never enough for the second day. Yesterday I ordered two side orders of coleslaw. They were the same small size of the "slaw on the side" ones. I know they must have larger containers. Next time I'm going to be more descriptive in my order. The personnel are friendly and helpful. Every time I've been, regardless of time, the same woman has been at the register. The location is just off Military Highway. The storefront appears to be on that major thoroughfare. But the parking lot is entered and faces Valley Drive. If approaching from the south there is no curb cut. One had to make a U turn to reach Valley Drive. If headed north from the restaurant I continue on Valley Drive and take a right on Raby Road which takes you to a traffic signal on Military Highway. The storefront is attractive and captures one's attention. The inside is spacious with fast food type booths that are larger than most. The walls are decorated with hangings such as one featuring the Old Dominion Monarchs. There were once rumors of a store being built in the Haygood area. So far that hasn't happened. I stopped by with my boyfriend the other night after a long day of work, craving those fries and a milkshake. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in any hurry. I ordered a Crispy Fish Sandwich, medium fries, and a vanilla shake with fudge (they were all out of chocolate, no biggie). My partner just got a Rallyburger and some Funnel Cake fries and we also shared a Mr. Pibb. Our order was handed to us shortly, and all of out items were correct. When we got home and ate, I found everything to be pretty tasty, especially after not eating all day. My fish sandwich was pretty good, though I added more lettuce and sauce at home. The fries were crispy and flavorful. And my shake was delicious. My boyfriend devoured his burger before I could get a picture, but I tried a funnel cake fry and it was also yummy, nice and crispy! No problems here except for the slow service and lack of chocolate shakes, but it didn't ruin our experience. We'll be back!

The Mac and cheese was floury and grainy, the coleslaw had a strong vinegar taste that I personally didn't like. The chicken was crispy but lack flavor although it was seasoned more than the tenders. The staff keeps the drive-thru moving, fast and to the point. That said, if you're new or just indecisive, I highly recommend going inside. The menu is huge, and if you're not ready when it's your turn, you might feel a little rushed. My husband and I text our orders to each other and read off our phones to keep things moving. Cook Out was once the king of budget eats -- I remember when a tray (entrée + 2 sides + a drink) was around $5. Those days are behind us. These days it's more like $7-$8, which still isn't bad, but the creep is noticeable. One of my latest discoveries that might change your life: they sell slices of cheesecake. Yes -- actual cheesecake for around $3. You can add any of their milkshake toppings to it. Crushed Oreos on your cheesecake? Done. Strawberry syrup and peanut butter cups? Go for it. It's dangerously indulgent. In short: Cook Out is chaotic in concept, but smooth in execution -- especially at this location. It's not fine dining, but if you're craving cookout classics with infinite combos and quick service, it hits the spot (esp late night cravings!!!!)

In 2023, they closed their original location of Shore Drive and set sights on a new local which was expanded. They have finally reopened and we got a chance to stop in to see how they were doing. Let's check it out shall we? We were seated a minute after walking in. There were a few people dining inside on this cloudy day. The decor is nice resembling a type of restaurant you may see in New Orleans. Right when I was looking through the menu, I ran into Chef Moe who greeted me with a handshake. It has been years since we last saw each other but the vibes came right back since Sophia and I were long-standing customers. We couldn't talk long since he was busy, but it was great to run into him again smiling from ear to ear seeing me there. Great people indeed. How was the food you might ask? Pretty damn good. We both ordered their fried catfish meals with sides (mine came with fries and sweet cornbread and Sophia's with mashed potatoes and gravy and mac-and-cheese). The fish was seasoned perfectly and was huge. It was big enough to cover a football field (just kidding). The fries, as always, tasted great and the cornbread was delish. The both of us ended up taking home leftovers where the food didn't lose any taste from before. It was so refreshing to stop by after so many years. And it was wonderful seeing Chef Moe continue to bring good vibes to the Norfolk community through his cooking. You know we'll be back soon. Till next time :)

As far as the food and customer service, everything was just okay for me. I ordered the shrimp, fish, crab cakes, and chicken wings. The crab cakes were mostly bread, which was a little disappointing. The wings were okay overall, but one of the wings was extremely feathery, so that definitely threw me off. One thing I would recommend is giving customers a little more sauce/condiments. I asked for vinegar to go with my shrimp, fish, and crab cakes, and I received what was basically a teaspoon of vinegar. I definitely needed more than that! I will say, I think I enjoyed Mama's Kitchen more at their previous location. I used to get a variety of their food (with the exception of the macaroni), and I remember enjoying it more. Maybe I just caught them on an off day, so I'd be willing to give them another try and see if my experience is different next time. Overall, the new location is beautiful, but the food was just okay for me this time around.
