We love Mama's Kitchen for easy casual and warmth of community. The staff are really wonderful and always make guests feel welcome. We've been going there to dine for years... Sad that Mama passed away but the family choose to stay with the community and keep the restaurant going! We have two go-to dishes: Kale and Salmon dish -- incredibly generous portion and so healthy -- Parmesan crusted salmon seared and served over kale, couscous, cranberries, and butternut squash salad, tossed in an apple vinaigrette. AND the Athenian Chicken which comes with chicken breast sautéed with tomatoes and garlic in olive oil and reduced in a lemon white wine sauce, topped with melted feta cheese -- the chicken serving could be a tad larger (it's one breast pounded thin). Served with choice of two sides: salad, broccoli, spinach, rice, pasta. Oh, and I'm reminded that the lentil soup was incredibly delicious! The pizza crust is okay ... but the toppings are very good and generously placed. Another few favorites to try come from appetizers: Grilled Halloumi -- Cheese charbroiled Cypriot cheese served inside a pita with tomatoes and dried mint. I very recently went with friends to Mamma's. I had been here once maybe seven years ago, during my Yelp hiatus, and that visit wasn't really memorable. This most recent time, service was welcoming and over the top excellent! I would categorize Mamma's as more Greek than Italian. When we came at 6:00pm on a Saturday evening, the restaurant was busy but there were still some open tables. My friends thought the music was too loud so they asked our server to turn the music down so we could hold a conversation, noting that on other occasions the music had not been loud. They did turn the sound down, maybe a little. There was a specials menu and the regular menu. For an appetizer, we ordered the Caprese, which was three skewers speared through cherry tomatoes and, I think, chunks of toasted burrata cheese, resting atop arugula lettuce drizzled with Balsamic vinegar. These were tasty. We also ordered crab cakes, a Meat Lovers pizza, lentil soup, a side of chicken white meat atop vegetable greens, and a side salad. The chunky crab cakes very good and came with couscous, broccoli and two slices of nicely done garlic bread. The side salad came with a vinaigrette dressing. This salad was lettuce and strips of green bell pepper. Personally, I would never eat raw green bell pepper (but will eat cooked green pepper), but each to his own. The lentil soup was very good. The side chicken was pretty good. I had the Meat Lovers pizza. The toppings (cheese, ham, sausage and pepperoni) were excellent. But honestly, I didn't care for the pita chip-like crust. It was scorched, hard and dry. BTW, the default sauce for this pizza is Marinara, but I was able to get a white sauce. Overall, Momma's was good enough that I would come back, especially considering its close to where I live and that there is a dearth of decent restaurants on the Richmond Highway corridor. read more

I used to love this restaurant, and the patio is still one of the nicest around, but our recent visit was a major disappointment. The food was overpriced and underwhelming across the board. The $23 lasagna was a small portion. The $16 hummus and dip plate came with only a few tablespoons of dips. A $16 gyro had very little meat and tasted bad enough that I couldn't finish it. Even swapping fries for a tiny side salad cost extra. The pizza was especially strange. The crust tasted stale, almost like it had been made days earlier. It was covered in excessive sauce, topped with a few thick slices cut from a mozzarella log, and then drenched in olive oil. At $23, it felt like one of the worst values of the meal. Service didn't help matters. A cramped table and oversized plates contributed to a glass of water being spilled all over my daughter. While she sat soaked, the manager came over to apologize. I suggested towels would be more helpful at the moment, and the interaction became awkward rather than solution-focused. For roughly $140, we left feeling disappointed. The patio remains beautiful, but the food, value, and overall experience no longer justify the price. read more

Mamma's Kitchen is hands down, my favorite local spot and for good reason! The service and food are always consistent. I recently had the Greek salad with gyro meat and the sun dried tomato ravioli with spinach. They were both absolutely delicious but the real standout is the calamari. It's easily the best in town-- crispy on the outside and tender inside and served piping hot. The staff here is always warm and attentive and makes you feel right at home. Two of my Soldiers really thought this place was stellar as they had eaten here before and wanted to come back. I had their melenzana, the calamari, and some pizza. The calamari's not bad. Light and crispy. The melenzana's was disappointing. Not a lot of flavor and it comes with spaghetti that's borderline terrible. This restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside as it's right next to Richmond Highway/US 1, but it was surprisingly very nice inside and on the outdoor patio. Can't complain about the service, the waitresses were nice and the food came out pretty quickly but the food itself was my favorite part. If you get an entree, you also get some bread and a side salad, and the Greek salad came with this delicious dressing. The olive oil in it tasted very fresh (and they do sell olive oil next door) and it was good to dip the bread in as well. We got the eggplant dish which was like a Mediterranean take on Eggplant Parmesan and it was very tasty. The menu was more on the Italian side than Mediterranean, with pastas, pizzas, and sandwiches being the main components but the Mediterranean sides and aspects were delicious. Had a wonderful first experience here tonight. It was a beautiful day and we really wanted to enjoy some outside patio seating. We've been meaning to check it out and I'm so glad we did. We arrived around 4:45 and despite being a beautiful busy day there was still room on the patio. Lots of outside tables and a beautiful gazebo, vinery patio. Service was fast and friendly. This was our first time at this restaurant and will be our last as it was an overall disappointing dining experience. We started off with fountain drinks and mine arrived with a fruit fly floating in the top, not a great start but it was quickly replaced. The calamari appetizer was fine, very small rings though they were tasty and not chewy. The real disappointment was the entrees. The Reuben Sandwich consisted of literally two slices of what looked like lunch meat, a slice of cheese, and a spoonful of sauerkraut. It was like a high school cafeteria version of a Reuben. I asked if that was normal and the waitress didn't know, but took it back to the kitchen where they appeared to add an additional slice of meat, even then it was still the saddest Reuben I've ever had. We also ordered the Beef Kebabs, which were average and definitely not worth $31 when you can get a nice 8oz steak for that price. Note the prices are significantly higher than what is listed here under popular dishes, the actual prices were $16 for Calamari, $15 for Rueben, and $31 for the Beef Kebabs. So for a $75 meal (before tip), I had much higher expectations of portion size and quality, both of which were lacking. There are many other options for good Italian/Greek/American food in Alexandria, spend your money somewhere else. read more

Had such a great experience here! I started with the fried calamari which was perfectly crispy, tender, and packed with flavor. For my main, I went with a half spicy meatball and half margarita pizza. Both were amazing! The spicy meatball had just the right amount of kick, and the margherita was super fresh and flavorful. Upon arrival there was a minimal wait however the staff did not acknowledge me or my daughter as we waited for the hostess. The hostess was very pleasant. We were seated at a booth on the inside and the ambiance was very inviting. We had grape leaves for an appetizer. The were really good. For my entree I had the lasagne. It was not good at all. It tasted burnt but at the same time it was very bland. My daughter had the kid's Alfredo. She said it was very good. The sauce thick like she liked it. I'm really disappointed in Mamma's Kitchen. I had told my friend what a wonderful restaurant this was and brought her with me tonight. While my food was fine, her eggplant was inedible. She mentioned this to the server after taking one bite, and the server responded "ok" and left. It was surprising that she didn't ask if my friend wanted something different, apologize, or have more of a reaction. Later, my friend politely mentioned to a manager that she wanted to provide feedback that the pasta was flavorful but the eggplant did not taste good and she could not eat it. He also barely responded. I was shocked that he did not offer to remove a portion of the charge or ask if she would care for something else. In addition, we were not offered soda refills (I did request one) or provided the bread that should have accompanied our entrees. The poor service and lack of concern from the staff and my friend not having a satisfactory meal was mortifying. read more

We used to really like coming here and enjoyed the service of a really sweet and friendly young blond server. This changed drastically on our last two visits. One of the other servers is curt, rude, and has a major attitude (apparently mainly towards women?). Words like 'thank you', 'you are welcome' or any other polite terms or behaviors don't seem to be part of her vocabulary. First time we had her a couple of months ago, I very politely and nicely asked whether I received the wrong wine, since it was clearly not a Pinot Grigio. She refused to check and just glared me down instead, insisting it WAS in fact what I had ordered. We gave her the benefit of a doubt, thinking she may have had a bad day, and we decided to try one more time. Big mistake! We had the same server and had to deal with her attitude from start to finish of our meal experience. Once she even filled up my partner's water glass while ignoring mine which had the same amount left in it. Really tasty pizza and filling sizes! I got the meat lovers pizza and Greek pizza. The meat lovers pizza I felt like was somewhat generic but still good. The Greek pizza was so delicious though with the cheese and gyro meat - it was definitely the fav of the table! The pizzas were able to fill a party of 5 so I'm content with that. They're a little more on the thin side but still filling enough. They provide Parmesan and red peppers too. Well the take out is abysmal. Ordered and they give you what they think you said... 2 spinach lunch salads with chicken gyros turned into 1 Greek salad and 1/2 cup chicken for $14. So I got nothing to eat. Oh they could make me something if I drive back and pay again! I think not... some how my fault per the manager for not knowing the terminology of their salads.. I had been looking for a venue that had a pizza crust that could hold its own and I think I finally found it here in Mamma's Kitchen!! I prefer being able to pick up my pizza and bite from it as opposed to using a knife and fork. Even with the additional items, this thin crust didn't waiver. When you enter the restaurant, the kitchen is right there. You can watch them prepare your food. This can cause somewhat of a bottleneck but they seem to manage just fine. The flavor was excellent with the additional toppings. Also, since I spotted calamari on the menu, I just had to have it. Same with the onion rings. Both additions were done well. This restaurant is a Mediterranean restaurant and has gyros so I look forward to trying theirs. read more

Mamma's Kitchen hands down is our favorite go-to restaurant in the area. We always find the food to be flavorful and the service has been excellent. I routinely get the steak and cheese with french fries and my husband gets the chicken parmesan with spaghetti - both consistently delicious! In addition, I recently used their catering service for my grandson's baptism for about 45. All the food ordered, which included appetizers (haloumi, trio dip, caprese kabobs and dolmathes), salad, and main meal of chicken limoni with spaghetti and pastichio, was outstanding! All our guests raved about the food, especially the pastichio! Hands down, it was the best I've ever had, and I'm Greek! The food was at the proper temperature for hot or cold. I've hosted numerous family events where I use catering, this was my first time with Mamma's, and I will most definitely continue to order from their catering menu in the future.
