Met family there at 4 pm on a Tuesday on our way through GA. Location and decor/atmosphere good, service good. However, they were not at all busy and I noticed 3 tables with dirty dishes on them as we were seated at our table. There were plenty of staff around who could've cleaned them. Our server was very nice and attentive. I'd had a big lunch, so opted to get a grilled chicken salad ToGo as we were finishing up our time there. My family ordered the beef and chicken empanadas and said they were good. Their other food looked fine and they seemed happy with it. When we got back on the road, I started eating the salad and was greatly disappointed! The candied pecans, (which must've been made in-house??) were burned and kind of soggy. The hearts of palm, olives and balsamic drizzle were way past their expiration date. The cucumbers were on the verge of being old. I will say the grilled chicken was the best part of it and the lettuce seemed fresh enough. After digging around trying to find some fresh bites to make it worth while, I gave up and threw most of it away. If we had still been in the restaurant, I would have sent it back. One other note, I worked in the restaurant business and catering business for 15 years. One thing I learned is customers will judge your restaurant based on how clean the bathrooms are. The women's bathroom was also very disappointing. Definitely needed a good cleaning from top to bottom. I noticed about 4 staff members sitting around. Why wouldn't the manage have higher standards and have them get to cleaning while waiting on customers to arrive? I was always taught , "if you have time to lean, you have time to clean." A friend spoke highly of Mambo's, but all I needed to hear to give it a try was "new Cuban restaurant" near me. I'm always down for Cuban food, and I've been hoping for new options in the Buford area. The experience was overall positive. I was pleased to see some attention had been paid to the environment. The lighting was ideal, the interior color scheme is sleek and modern but inviting. They also have open air seating to the side of the main floor. Booths are spacious, but they also have hi-tops. They provide complimentary basket of toasted bread dusted with spices and a bright and peppery green sauce. Tasty, with what I'd consider to be moderate level of heat. I ordered the Croquetas de Jamon, which is a plate of four ham croquettes with Romesco sauce, which is a semi-sweet puree usually made from red pepper, tomato, herbs, nuts, etc. Served on an appealing ceramic platter with a garnish of what looked like sprigs of fresh thyme. They arrived crisp, but not too hot. Great combination of flavors. My entree was Lomo de Cerdo a la Parilla. Two citrus-marinated grilled pork chops topped with chimichurri and served with rice, black beans, and fried plantains. The pork was on the well done side, but tender and flavorful. The sauce was fresh and savory with an herby undertone. Plantains were just past firm, still had some satisfying toothsomeness with that great caramelization that gives that unique almost honey like flavor, a great contrast for the spices on the pork. The black beans were perfectly tender and a bit smoky. The rice was also cooked exactly right. I'd go with yellow over white every time. My entree was from the lunch menu. Good pricing for that item, and a satisfying portion for the money. The main menu I noticed had more expensive fare. Many traditional Cuban dishes, and I'm looking forward to going back again to work my way through the selections. We went early in the lunch "hour" so it wasn't too crowded - but it deserves a lot more attention. Definitely returning. One and only one negative: The interior had a pronounced chemical fragrance. I noticed that the plastic menus were at least one source for this smell. My hand actually kept that aroma after handling the menus. It was somewhat distracting, and quite unfortunate for a style of food known for spices and aromas. I'd advise someone in charge to see about minimizing or mitigating that. read more

We wanted to try a place we have not been to and from Yelp search, we found this place. As someone said earlier, do not follow Google's direction. It doesn't take you straight here. This place is located behind Bubba's and in front of Homewood Suites by Hilton. The restaurant is very colorful and festive Latin atmosphere. The background music is lively but not overwhelming. Being that we were early, it was not busy and there are ample parking spaces. When we walked in, we were seated immediately but it took 15 mins for someone to realized we have not been served. The server Nicholas was very nice, courteous and friendly. He came by frequently throughout our meal to check on us with good timing. He brought us a basket of garlic bread with a spicy salsa verde. Love it. We started our meal with appetizers Tostones Rellenos and Empanadas. They were both very delicious. I think these would have been enough for two but the menu looks so good that we ordered entrees. We got the Paella Valenciana and Lechon Asado. The entrees were very tasty but I feel that the paella was a little saltish. Maybe next time I make sure to tell them to ease on the salt. But overall, everything is outstanding. For the price, the servings are huge. We will be back and I cannot recommend this place enough! read more

Next we ordered the Vaca Frita with yellow rice, plantains, & black beans. This was excellent and too much food for my wife so, it bevmcame my lunch on Saturday. I ordered the Camarones Enchilados Large shrimp sautéed with a spicy creole sofrito sauce with peppers, onions, and white wine. Served with rice, black beans, and plantains. This dish has some spice and was awesome. The flavor, was amazing as was the combination of flavors. The spice had me sweating a bit. Loved it! Next we had the guava cheesescake, very tasty indeed. A great finish to a terrific meal. Our waitress Juileta was on the ball and very friendly all night as were the expeditors and other support staff. Had an opportunity for a "date night" with the husband and decided to try somewhere new. We got seated quickly on a Saturday night at 6:30. Drinks were great, service was good. We opted to start with the fresh guacamole, which was delicious. My husband tried a seafood dish and I got the churrasco. Everything was cooked well and tasted great. I had 1 complaint when we were there, but it had nothing to do with the restaurant or their service. They have a DJ on Saturday nights, which I think is fun. Unfortunately this DJ they use parks his truck in the handicap area and blocks for actual handicap persons from parking in front of the building. I tried giving him the benefit of the doubt and hoped he was only parking there to unload equipment and would move his vehicle. He did not. I even watched as he blocked the ramp from the sidewalk to the parking lot and a mother with a stroller had to maneuver to get around it while he just stood there. They need to tell the DJ he needs to move his vehicle immediately after unloading, or not park there at all. read more

My boyfriend ordered the steak churrasco steak with white rice and black beans and it was heavily salted (the beans, steak, & rice was soooo salty). I ordered the mixed seafood "filete de pescado" and it had a very acquired taste to it. The seafood texture was very chewy, the grouper tasted like tilapia, and the sauce was very overbearing. The tostones rellenos would have been better off without that mayo based sauce on top of it. The tres leche tasted horrible. The bottom of it taste like rice pudding and the top was very hard. It was also nice to have some for the next day don't judge me. For cocktails we went with the Pisco Sour (Peru's National Drink), Latin Cosmopolitan and the Ultimate Texas Margarita. I ordered the mixed grill sampler and everything was great except the pork tenderloin, it was dry. I've had the masas de puerco here and they are phenomenal so I was surprised with the tenderloin. The churrasco and surprisingly the chicken breast on the other hand were both tender and juicy. I usually don't eat chicken breast cause it's a dry meat by nature but next time I'm here I'm gonna order the grilled chicken breast it was that good For drinks I order the Rosa Negra which is a mezcal based drink...love that shit! How did we not find this place sooner! It's delicious and flavorful. Sangria pitcher was enough for 6 glasses. The complimentary bread came with a very spicy Peruvian sauce, and it was amazing. The empanadas were large. The ceviche was so fresh and not fishy tasting/smelling. And they ask for the spice level. I could just eat this platter as my main meal. The lomo saltado was better than it looks. I thought the fries on the bottom would taste soggy but they were crunchy and tasted great with the curry sauce. The meat was juicy. And the side of yellow rice was soft and flavorful. I will be back to try more dishes for sure. read more

A couple things to note. Don't follow Google Maps when attempting to find this place because, Google has not clue how to map things more than 500 yards away from the main roads. And two... this place is must try! Cuban and Peruvian food places are few and far between so when they do come up, it better be done right and Mambo's Cafe seems to do it right. I never had Cuban food and Peruvian food so this place intrigued me to no end when I was told about it so I had to give it a shot. It looks to be a local chain with only two locations, one in Buford and the other in Alpharetta so people inside the Perimeter, you SOL... The interior looks to be just like any other chain restaurant. Spacious, moderately lit, with a bar so it's pretty unassuming. The service is basic. Professional. Courteous. Timely. Friendly... so there's really nothing to write home about. Now... the FOOD I had the Ceviche Mixto and their lunch special Churrasco. First off, they brought a tiny basket of bread. Four pieces of what looked to be garlic toast with a salsa verde that used serrano peppers which will kick you in the teeth if you're not ready and I wasn't. But the flavor of that dipping sauce was so good so suffice to say, it was kicked repeatedly. The only downside that I have to deduct points is that they don't bring you more bread as each basket of 4 tiny pieces was an extra $3.75 which was just ridiculous but hey, how's that inflation for y'all!!!??? Let's start with the ceviche. The flavor of this is to die for! The fantastic marriage between sour and savory due to the lime juice, cilantro, red onion, salt and pepper blend that any ceviche is known for is such a fantastic combination. The fish looked fresh, the octopus was tender, the mussels didn't give off any strong fishy smell. Everything was crispy, sour, salty, and just a mess of amazing flavor combinations that was just blissful to eat. Then on the side were a handful of cancho which are corn nuts which added a new texture to the seafood. A savory toasty crunch that brought even more satisfaction. The dipping sauce they included was a spicy red sauce that probably used the same serrano pepper. It was addicting to eat for sure! Highly recommend the ceviche and this was my first ceviche experience too so suffice to say, I think the bar is set high. If your ceviche isn't like the one here in Mambo's, then I don't want it. The churrasco is a skirt steak slathered in some of the most flavorful chimmichurri sauce with a small bowl of black means, yellow rice and peas, and 3 pieces of plantains that were sweet and soft. The steak was cooked to perfection, a lovely medium. The chimmichurri was flavorful and definitely added a fantastic level of flavor to the steak which heightened the already well seasoned meat. The rice was a bit of a let down as it was just a very minimally done rice pilaf without any sort of flavoring. So the winner of entree was the steak and the plantains by far! All in all, this place serves dishes that have levels of flavor at every turn. Each dish is satisfyingly addicting that will make you not want to stop eating. Highly recommend this place for sure! read more
