Solid Korean food. Side dishes were plentiful and consistently refilled when we were waiting for our main dish. Ambiance reminded me of the Korean restaurants in the DMV so I had high hopes! This is the place that I go to when I need a pick me up. The experience is always comforting and delicious!! If you have a group and want to have a good time, I recommend the barbecue!! The seafood option is perfection and I've heard the beef is amazing. I love their broiled mackerel. Eating it with the fluffy white rice and a little soy sauce is *chef's kiss.* But the stars of the show are the sides. You can get seconds of up to 3 sides and I often take them up on that offer! Okay, This is my second update to my review and I am pretty stingy with five stars so...... I have come here at least 60 times over the years and last nights visit made me come back to update my review. There were two servers as usual but.... the service was awesome last night! They food is always on point but the service hasn't always been. The servers were smiling, fast, friendly, said thank you! I had this place bookmarked for the longest time and I finally got to try it for lunch with my coworkers. Since it was lunch the BBQ wasn't available. I got the bulgogi lunch plate, it's one of my usuals at Korean restaurants and a safe bet to be good. Unfortunately it was weak on flavor. The banchans (side dishes) were good and service was friendly and on top of things (we had a larger party with 6). My coworkers were also not extremely enthusiastic about the food, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. It's got good, average food. I'm glad I tried it but I probably won't go back. read more

One of my favorite things is sharing great banchan over great conversation, and that's exactly what happened when I visited Mama's House. I visited Mama's with a good friend who loves Korean like I do, so my meal was exceedingly enjoyable. Good food, good company -- what more can you ask for in life? I ordered the dolsot bibimbap, which is a very typical Korean order. But what can I say: I was feeling basic that day, and I really wanted bibimbap. I almost never get to enjoy dolsot bibimbap, because this is the kind of bibimbap that comes in a heated stone bowl. I have young children, so a) I never get to eat at Korean restaurants, and b) even if I did get to eat at Korean restaurants, I wouldn't be able to order a dish that came in a steaming hot bowl, because one of my curious children would undoubtedly touch it and burn themselves, and they'd cry, and we'd have to leave, etc. But I was here without kids, so bring out the molten hot dish! The bibimbap was good, but I was a little surprised that it came topped with a bunch of lettuce. It was like a salad on top of my bowl. I do love salad greens, but I don't think they go very well with a hot dish like bibimbap. The lettuce wilted and didn't add very much to the bibimbap, to be honest. The banchan that was served before our meal was great, and we got a dozen different little dishes of sweet and sour and spicy and savory nibbles. My favorites were the kimchi, seaweed salad, and spicy cucumber salad. I could have just made a meal on the banchan and a cold beer. Oh, speaking of adult beverages: I ordered the matchsoon (Korean plum wine), and it was super sweet. It was not for me. But if you like very sweet wine, you might like it! The service here was amazing. We never wanted for anything, and our food was brought to us very quickly. They were even very gracious when I spilled food on the floor at the end of our meal. This place has the best Korean soup I've found in Indiana. The stock is so flavorful and has a good bit of heat to warm you up. The perfect wintertime soup. The kimbap (roll) is great too. I asked for it without beef and they were able to accommodate! Their banchan (side dishes) served with the meal was traditional and good as well. I especially liked how authentic the food tastes and the ambiance was like I was eating in someone's home. I have been to MaMas now three times and each time I've been, I have made it a point to bring someone so they can experience this great authentic Korean food! My favorite has been the sizzling bulgogi! OMG, it is so good, it comes out on a hot cast iron plate so be careful. This is what keeps me coming back. I have also found out they have rice cakes and I have been DYING to try Korean rice cakes for so long. The appetizer is $15, but it is shareable and so yummy! Definitely worth it. Lastly, I would add that the service could improve. Although I've not had a bad experience here with the employees, I think they could do a better good with checking in throughout your visit there. Mamas is my favorite Korean Bbq spot I've been coming here since I was a kid! I hadn't had it in a while so I pulled up right at 4:30 when they opened dinner. I don't judge them too hard on customer service it is a family business and there is usually only about 2-3 workers. That's why I think it's best to go early before they get too busy and have to have their attention everywhere. BBQ Combination( enough for 3) All of our meat was delicious, fresh, marinated perfectly and you cook it to your liking You get 12 sides that are the highlight of the dinner in my opinion, they're all very yummy I have my select favorites. I love Korean cuisine and I'm trying to go to every Korean restaurant in town and this is one of the few I had not tried yet. This is located in a plaza that looks really run down, parking lot was not completely paved or hardly had lines. But I don't judge restaurants by the location or the exterior. In places like this I have discovers gems in the past. I was in a group of 6, was first to arrive but couldn't get a table right away because i wasn't sure how many people wanted to use the BBQ grill. There were two servers for our table but it took long before one came to take our order. I just ordered japchae off the menu which was so delicious! What was disappointing was the service. One of the servers had zero smile or friendliness and looked kinda bothered every time we needed something from him. For the price they are asking I had expected higher quality of service from them. Also, once two other tables started BBQing the dining room was really smoky and I felt very uncomfortable. Fortunately we were done with our dinner at that time so I decided to leave as soon as all I could smell was smoke. Maybe they need better ventilation. I'm glad I tried this place, I will probably not return there because there are other Korean restaurants in town with better service and same level of food for less or at the same price point. read more

Ma Ma's House was recommended to me by a friend, and I'm thankful for the suggestion because I don't believe I would have found this place on my own. Ma Ma's House is located in a plaza on the east side near Fort Ben. My friend and I choose to have the Korean bbq experience. My friend ordered one of the marinated chickens and I choose pork belly. We also split a bottle of plum wine. We received a variety of sides. I wished the pork belly wasn't frozen, since it was difficult to cook meat evenly once it became a little less frozen. That's my only complaint food wise; everything else was delicious! The side dishes come offer a variety of heat tolerance options. Service was good. The server was attentive. An 18% gratuity is added onto the bill (however, it is stayed that the gratuity is only added on parties of 7 or more). I think the quality of the food we received fit the price point. Bruh... ok? Korean food is the SOUL FOOD of Asian cuisine, can we just all agree on that? This place is a gem. It's been around for decades and it's the most authentic Korean place probably in the Midwest. One of their items is the 2nd-best tasting thing on planet earth, in my opinion and that's the pork Kimchee sauté entree. It has sweet. It has HEAT. It has salty. It has sour. It has umami. It has all the flavors at the same time which is what makes it so irresistible. My pro tips? 1) Go to this place ALONE because whether you're by yourself or with a party of 4, the server will bring 10-16 dishes of banchan before your food arrives. If you're by yourself, you don't have to share them with anyone. I could get by just on the banchan alone--each one is a unique adventure bursting with different flavors. Some may look boring or dull, but once you taste them, you'll be blown away. 2)I also recommend their bibim bop and my close runner-up fave is their SPICY Kimchee stew, the Kimchee Jigae (best in winter on a cold day). 3) Friendly word of advice tho: this place is located in an area and building that look incredibly sus. You gotta keep an open mind and walk in anyway. Your eyes my burn a little from all the smoke in there as they do offer traditional Korean bbq. So yeah, it's kinda Smokey. 4) You're gonna have little red flakes of stuff caught between all your teeth, so no selfies until you check your smile. 5) Final warning, Kimchee is a natural laxative, ok? This is NOT "date night" food. You need to be within 45 minutes of your own bathroom and clear your schedule for the rest of the day. You're not going to a movie, you're not having friends over for game night or cards after, and you're certainly not engaging in any romance after you enjoy this amazing menu. Trust me--if you take too long getting home, your evening will rapidly deteriorate into a cascading series where each state of affairs becomes worse than the one before. Kimchee doesn't play. It's a natural CLEANSE, ok? The kind that makes your face sweat. The kind that makes you sit on your own fist while driving. DO NOT ignore this tip! Clear your plans, go alone, return home alone and prepare for at least 2 rounds of toilet rodeo (and you'll need a shower afterwards). This has nothing to do with the restaurant or the food prep. It's Kimchee. And this side effect is not a bad thing--you won't feel sick like with food poisoning--you'll actually feel great when it's over. But for the luva all things holy, you're not gonna want anyone around you for the rest of the day. Keep your dignity and keep this place a solo adventure from beginning to end. read more

Mama's is my favorite Korean restaurant in Indy. There are 3 others I've been to - Bando (also in Pendleton Pike), Sisters (Greenwood), and Cafe Korea (Fishers). The food at Mama's is authentic and flavorful, with generous portion sizes. First off, the banchan. These side dishes are a hallmark of Korean cuisine, and you get 12 of them. This is far more than many other Korean restaurants, even outside of Indy. There is a variety of banchan, with both cabbage and radish kimchi always included. They charge you for extra banchan, but they provide them in such generous portions that I rarely need to ask for seconds. We recently got the pork sauté, dolsot bibimbop, and seng daegu maeuntang. Pork sauté is always a safe choice, because it's flavorful, slightly spicy, and very tasty! It's less salty and oily than the pork and kimchi sauté (also delicious, btw). Dolsot bibimbop is also a safe choice. It comes with a variety of veggies, marinated beef, rice at the bottom, and an egg on top. The heat of the pot makes crispy rice at the bottom! I highly recommend this over the non-dolsot, "cold" version. This comes pre-mixed with gochujang, so if you can't handle too much spice I would ask for it on the side. Seng daegu maeuntang is a spicy broth with cod, clam, tofu, and radish. It's a lighter broth but flavorful and spicy. The cod is cooked to be very tender. This is a pretty large portion, so I would recommend sharing. Overall, my meal was great! I've been here many times and have always had tasty food with plenty of leftovers. Last time I was here was more than a decade ago and I don't recall being terribly impressed then, but my recent revisit for a late lunch birthday celebration was a very pleasant experience! We had a group of 7 in at around 2:30 on a Saturday, and the place was hopping. Our group split between ordering BBQ and bibimbap, and both were tasty. You will NOT go hungry here. We started by sharing a ginormous seafood scallion pancake, enough for everyone to get a couple pieces. Between the BBQ meat, the deliciously crispy rice bowls and the banchan (a dozen or so little bowls of condiments and garnishes for sharing), I was stuffed by the time I left two hours later. Friends RAVED about this east side restaurant and I finally had the chance to get over there to try it out myself. I was not disappointed! We ordered the Bulgogi dinner, which came with pork, beef and chicken. You can cook the meat on the table top grill yourself or have them make it for you in the kitchen, but we wanted the fun of trying it ourselves. The beef was tender, but not spicy. The pork was probably the best - it had a nice flavor to it and I combined it with a side of rice and some of the sides for sharing. All the sides were cold. That's not something I'm used to, but I really enjoyed the potatoes and bean sprouts. The outside is rough. Potholes in the parking lot so watch out. If it were just rating on the food alone, I'd give it 4/5 stars. However, there were black specks in my soda. They did quickly bring a new one when I asked. The food was delicious, the soup, Soondubu was great. It's a soft tofu spicy beef soup with some tender octopus bits and was scrumptious. Also got the spicy pork which was phenomenal with the ban Chan(sides). And there's plenty of sides, on the menu it states you can request up three refills of the sides. I put the pork in my spoon and some sides on top to add texture and it just balances. The reason for the 3 stars is because the khal-bee which was the marinated short ribs was not tender, the quality didn't look nice, and it was $32 the most expensive thing we got. Total our bill was $100. Service was okay. Bathroom was 1.5/5. I would come back, I just don't have high expectations for service or the khal-bee. read more

Mama's has the real coals and that smoky flavor it imparts on the meats. Also, their kimchee is the best I have ever had. A previous commenter mentioned it as a natural laxative. I don't find that true BUT if I went there for lunch my wife knew I had been there when I got home from work. The kimchee gets into your pores and the smell seeps out. Get a to-go container of kimchee. The bulgogi meat is seasoned so perfectly. The fish cake side dish, radishes, cucumbers, etc. are all so perfectly seasoned and spicy. TL:DR Loved it! Easily the best Korean food in Indy. We were torn between Korean Bbq and individual plates, but we wanted to try a variety of options so we went with the Dolsot Bibimbop, Woogoeji Gook, Sautéd Squid, and the Dwenjang Chigae. The place itself doesn't have much going on as far as interior design. In fact with the tables of bbq going, it can get a bit smoky in there even with the hoods on. The banchan dishes that came out were surprisingly tasty and a very good variety. The bibimbop came out perfectly with with rice sizzling to a crisp as it was served. The soy bean paste soup was really interesting. It took me a few bites to get used to the fermented bean paste flavor which was a bit more fermented than I expected, but once I got used to it, it was actually really tasty and complex dish. This was the opposite of the Dwenjang soup, which was a more mild and soothing flavor. Overall, I loved it, the service (which is commented on about frequently) was pretty standard but the food was excellent! read more

Lunch #2 spicy chicken is my go to here. Long time favorite. Very attentive and friendly waitress staff.

The food is absolutely delicious. The location is not that great but don't let that deter you. I would have given a perfect if the staff were a bit friendlier. I have to wonder if it is a language issue giving them the benefit of the doubt. The prices may seem a little high I paid about $21 for a meal, but it was enough for two and beautifully presented even for a takeout order so we'll worth it. I also wish the menu would ideally some of the sides. It just says vegetables. Not being knowledgeable of Korean cuisine, it would be helpful. read more

Food: The main course meats are all decent, the marinades all decent. However, the banchan (free appetizers) are pretty terrible, granted they are complementary. Their kimchi is from the huge jars you buy at Asian supermarkets. Service: FREAKING TERRIBLE. They really suck. They are short staffed, and they seem frustrated whenever you make any requests.
