    Roti Canai x 2
    Kemi A.

The roti canai was def delicious. I ordered 2 for myself. It came with 2 sauces and I enjoyed using both. My meal was the Nasi Lemak with prawns. This came with coconut rice which I found the coconut flavor to be a bit overpowering for my taste bud. I think I would prefer just plain white rice if I can choose. The sambal sauce the prawns were cooked in was flavourful though. I did take away, and they packed everything securely to go. I was trying to return the next day to get my roti canai but by the city, they were closed. :(

Went yesterday for lunch around 1PM. The restaurant was busy but not packed and I ordered using the QR code on the table. You can pay using cash at the counter and they offer a 10% cash discount. I ordered the beef satay, roti planta, and sambal sotong (calamari). Everything was fantastic. I love spicy food and the sambal sotong was just spicy enough. The roti planta was so buttery and complemented the spice spicy sambal and curries that it was served with so well. If I wasn't just visiting I would definitely frequent.

Like a lot of restaurants around the city, this one is rather cheap, and service up a rather nice curry. However, I wouldn't call it an Indian restaurant though, more like an Indonesian one, which certainly makes it stand out from all the other places that seem to pretty much copy all the other places. I found that the service was pretty good as well, and they do serve up a pretty quick meal as well, making it a great place for lunch.

Lunch Special at Mamak with $12-$13 rice combo which is good value if you want some good Malaysian food for lunch! The setting here is quite casual so great for a quick bite during lunch. We ordered curry from the lunch menu and of course their famous Roti! Kari kambing ($13.00) spicy lamb curry with Rice Roti canai ($7.00) served with two curry dips and spicy sambal sauce Teh halia ($4.00) with a hint of ginger Limau ais ($4.00) Fresh lime with syrup on ice Freshly made Roti was just so good! Crispy and fluffy and toasty! Highly recommend if you like Malaysian food!

I love roti... I especially love roti telur. The roti here is magically soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. It's how it should be. When I came for lunch I had the lamb curry... the meat is tender and there is a good initial spice. You can ramp that up if required. What let us down was we couldn't easily experience the roti as a side dish. I love dipping roti into my curry but I had to buy root cenai at a minimum to do this (more curry than I needed) adding another $9.50 to the bill. The food is good! Give them a go.

The Roti Canai was hands down delicious! The roti was fresh and the sauces were flavorful. However, the main dishes did not impress me. I tried the Mee Goreng an Nasi Lamar with fish. The Mee Goreng was okay, and could be a little sweeter. It sort of tasted like simple stir fried noodles. The Nasi Lamar came with well made aromatic coconut rice. However, the rest of the dish was plain. The cat fish had tons of bones, making it difficult to eat. I only received a small amount of fish relative to the massive amount of rice given. There was minimal curry sauce that accompanied the fish. There were whole peanuts as well, making it weird to eat. I prefer crushed peanuts. The ambiance was clean and modern. Customer service was average. They do charge a surcharge for any credit card purchase. This is the only restaurant that has charged this fee even though my purchase was over $30.

The ever so popular Mamak has arrived in Melbourne (for a while now) - and well, things aren't much different in Melbourne! Packed at 2pm when we arrived for a late lunch, we were quickly seated, which is unusual for this place from what I've seen. I'm not familiar with Malaysian food myself - so I went for the Kari Ayam lunch special (11) - the first item on the lunch menu. The dish is a chicken with a Malaysian style curry and potatoes. I actually wasn't sure what to expect, and the dish ended up being a bit too spicy for me, with the kind of spice that just escalates. I can't say this is my favorite type of curry, but it wasn't bad or anything - just a bit overwhelming and acidic for my taste. Spices other than curry are more prominent than in other types of curry, as well as less creamy than other curries. The Teh Halia (3.5), a 'stretched' frothy sweet (milk) tea, was really delicious! The specific one was infused with ginger, as I'm a fan of sweet ginger tea. Although I was a bit apprehensive, it was really good! The ginger can be a little overwhelming if you're not a big fan of ginger, but for me, the drink was better than my food. I would definitely recommend trying out the Teh Tarik if you're not a fan of ginger. If not, you can just watch them 'stretch' the tea in the kitchen. The service was satisfactory, and the place was a comfortable place with a simple and modern interior - and similar to the other Mamak chains, I believe. Their rotis look crazy (presentation-wise) and delicious. If I'm ever back in Melbourne, I'd like to get one! After all, they did win the Good Food Under $30 Award this year.

Popular Malaysian restaurant in Melbourne. (there's a pretty sizable Malaysian community in Australia). Good roti prata with authentic curry and fluffy roti. Gado gado (Indonesian/Malaysian salad) is fresh and has a good texture. Desserts (Sweet roti) are also very good Would recommend a visit when in Melbourne.

Nasi goreng (don't bother ordering this, not their strength).

Melbourne has no shortage of good Malaysian food, and in my opinion, Mamak triumph them all! Mamak has quite a reputation for having the BEST Roti and Nasi Lemak in town! And when they are that famous, you just gotta go! Just like any popular eatery in the city, expect a long ass queue. * We started off with beef and chicken satay: beautifully aromatic, flavorful from the marinade, albeit a little sweet for my palate. The peanut sauce on the side is a great dipping sauce for those meaty morsels. * Nasi Lemak: My favorite dish of the night! This quintessential dish has everything I like in a plate: large meaty deep fried chicken (Bomb!), coconut based rice, spiciness and juicy curry chicken. There's simply nothing not to like about this classic that highlights the characteristics of Malaysian national dish - flavorful, aromatic and rich. * Roti with egg: you cannot not to go Mamak, and skip their famous roti! Made from scratch, stretch in front of you to the thinnest and fluffiest roti. Served with curry and sambal, I honestly can eat the Roti by itself, but dip or no dip, it's still fantastic! I finished my meal with a cup of teh tarik, which was creamy, slightly bitter but satisfying. Bustling, hip ambiance, friendly service and out-of-this-world good food. Thank You, Mamak... I totally fell for you!

Nasi lemak with fried chicken and vegetable curry :)

Delicious roti, fragrant curries, love the teh tarik (or teh ais on a hot day) - great to balance a spicy sambal! Fried chicken is ok, nothing to write home about but it actually just makes valuable belly space for other amazing goodies :) Maggi goren is surprisingly delicious - something about the texture of 2 minute noodles slathered in mee goren sauce :) Satays also worthwhile if you've got room on the table / belly! No booze here - but the Korean grocery store across the street has a great array of delightful Korean + Japanese beers, sake, sojus so consider a chaser :)

    Nasi lemak with fish curry

Everyone's been talkign about this place since its recent opening. Riding on the current wave of Malaysian/Singaporean food movement in Melbourne, Mamak focuses on offering nasi lemaks, rotis and satays. Did not get a chance to try too much but the nasi lemak was nicely frangrant and moist (albeit a tad salty) with a decent side of cucumber, hard-boiled egg, anchovies and peanuts and sambal. The fish curry that came with it was rightly disappointing - it was overcooked and bland. The vegetables in the curry, however, were nicely cooked through. Perhaps best to stick to curry vegetables or try other options like chicken or lamb (tried ordering sambal cuttlefish initially but was unavilable). A$11.50 for a plate of nasi lemak might sound crazy to most Malaysians/Singaporeans who are used to paying no more than A$3 for a serving, but this is definitely a place to get your fix if you miss the food back home. I'm reserving the remianing two stars till I have tried the rotis and satays. Can anyone tell me how they are compared to Papa Rich?

    Dozen mixed satay.

The real reason you come here is for the roti canai. It's made quick smart, lands on the the table steaming hot and is accompanied by two kinds of dhal of varying spice levels and a little splodge of sambal to really get your tastebuds going. Sure, go ahead and order other dishes from the menu like the satay, the nasi lemak and the chicken curry. They're good, but don't hit the same levels of sublime that you get with the roti. Pro tip: Kids love watching the roti being made in the front window, and will happily scoff a plate on their own (leaving the dhal) if you let them.

Our second time here. It was bustling even though it was Tuesday night. We had some roti to start. It was crispy, soft and delicious all at the same time. My preference is just to dip it in a little of the shrimpy/chilli sauce but my boyfriend preferred the curry style sauce. We shared 12 skewers, mixed beef and chicken. The chicken was amazing, quite smokey and succulent. The beef had a nice lemongrass flavour but was a little dry for our liking. The satay dipping sauce was more on the sweet side. I enjoyed it but would prefer more kick. We also shared the shrimp paste/chilli tossed green beans. These were quite fishy and had a bit of a kick but didn't blow our mind. They're not licensed so we enjoyed a Sprite. The service was polite and professional. Pretty well priced and pretty decent overall.

Woohooooo, Eureka this place is still open, we were the last customers. As we walked in two Ceiling fans were working hard, I don't think the AC was on, it was HOT, steamy, the room is filled with South East Asian aromas and it's not even a 40 degree Melbourne day, lots of goodness has been cooked and served before us, humidity, smells & sweats, reminiscence of a Hawker street somewhere in KL, Kuala Lumpur. I can feel my sweat from the BoxFit session has a new flavours now. From the Street level, this place is nothing fancy, the bright Green Jade colour is the only attractive feature about it, BUT what they are serving are incredible for what they are charging, they could and should charge more. Started with the CKT (Malaysian and Singaporean loves to abbreviate words) or Char Kwee Tiaw, Fried Rice Noodles, then Char Hor Fun, Combination Fried Rice Noodles with Egg Gravy sauce and lastly some Curry Puffs or Samosa (Indian) or Pastel (Indonesian). This pastry varied inside, but has common ingredients; Potatoes, Curry and Chilly. It was the right decision, not sure whether my muffin top would agree, worry about that later. In under than 5 minutes after we ordered, those goodness were flying onto our table .... so QUICK .... they served the best first ..... CKT - Char Kwee Tiaw, easy 8.5/10 ....VERY strong aroma of the Pork Crackling and Chinese Sausages, BIG Prawns just needs that burnt-wok taste, makes it a little drier .... That was a joy for around $12 Char Hor Fun 7/10, not quite there, rice noodles needs to be fried more but the Egg Gravy Sauce was tasty, it can be better and traces of the egg yolks still prominent, that tasty runny eggs .... about $12 Curry Puffs easily 8/10, fried to perfection, balanced ingredients and served hot, very important in my opinion, the aromatic flavours lingers as you bite into it, $5,50 for three. All these flavours plus Sambal & Chillies makes my palate sings. Life doesn't get much better than this after a long long day. Simplistic Joy and no drugs needed, just some CKT. A decade ago or so we might not be able to get these kind of offerings, so I must thank & commend the Chef and proprietor of the business for bringing that Hawkers' spirit and providing these goodness for us to enjoy.

In fact, my partner had already finished her meal by the time my bowl of laksa arrived. Although the restaurant has been in this location for quite some time, I was surprised that the waitresses were not taking orders. Instead, customers were required to approach the counter and place orders with a counter person there, who would then give a number stand to be set on the table. The Hainan chicken was okay, yet the fine chopped ginger was an additional $1 charge? On the other hand, my laksa was delicious and I could tell it was made with the authentic ingredients of that Hawker Street. While the restaurant was not very busy at the time, I found it frustrating that my partner and I were not served at the same time, and the wait for my food was quite long. Given this, it would have been nice for the staff to provide a clearer explanation for the delay. However, despite the wait, I must say that the laksa was well worth it. In fact, I would recommend trying the laksa despite the long wait.

Menu is expansive with a large range of appetisers, a few noodle dishes, curries, laksas, and even Thai food (so bizarre). Meals are for person only and not for sharing. We ordered the following: 1. Traditional curry laksa which arrived with one mussel (literally), some prawns, two pieces of white fish, and some tofu in an average sized bowl. The laksa was served at room temperature. It was yellow in colour, not super creamy or thick (so lacked the creaminess and flavour of coconut milk) and tasted like turmeric only. Not spicy at all. Even the extra sambal I asked for didn't help with the flavour. It lacked flavour. 2. Nasi lemak with beef rendang - the beef rendang tasted exactly like the chicken curry that came with the sliced up cold roti canai. My friend couldn't even tell if he was eating beef or chicken. Fail. 3. Char po hee - goeey looking rice noodles covered in an eggy slime and hiding mushrooms underneath tasted like nothing. Just slimey. We left most of it behind. Cash only too.
