The roti canai was def delicious. I ordered 2 for myself. It came with 2 sauces and I enjoyed using both. My meal was the Nasi Lemak with prawns. This came with coconut rice which I found the coconut flavor to be a bit overpowering for my taste bud. I think I would prefer just plain white rice if I can choose. The sambal sauce the prawns were cooked in was flavourful though. I did take away, and they packed everything securely to go. I was trying to return the next day to get my roti canai but by the city, they were closed. :( read more

Went yesterday for lunch around 1PM. The restaurant was busy but not packed and I ordered using the QR code on the table. You can pay using cash at the counter and they offer a 10% cash discount. I ordered the beef satay, roti planta, and sambal sotong (calamari). Everything was fantastic. I love spicy food and the sambal sotong was just spicy enough. The roti planta was so buttery and complemented the spice spicy sambal and curries that it was served with so well. If I wasn't just visiting I would definitely frequent. read more

This is a chain restaurant that came highly recommended for its Malaysian and Indonesian food. Came in late afternoon on a holiday, so there was a 15% surcharge, plus the usual 2% for credit card, but it was still decently priced for the quality of food we good. There was a QR code on the table for you to place and pay for your order and the food comes out as soon as they are ready, as in they are not coursed out. There were so many types of roti to choose from, and since we didn't have a server to ask about the difference, we just went with the only one I know and had before, which was roti canai. This was the best roti canai I've ever had. The pancake was fluffy and crispy and chewy all at once. The curry so flavorful, but really the pancake tasted great even without dipping in the curry. The kori sayur was like a thin veggie curry, almost like a soup, also very tasty. The nasi goreng, or fried rice, was rich and savory, with great texture on the rice. We went from starving to stuffed with all these dishes, but we still had one more coming, a chicken murtabak. Never had anything like this before, but it was a thick patty made of ground chicken and veggies and breading maybe, covered with a thin wrap and grilled. I didn't enjoy the texture of the patty and would not order this again. I'd say 4.5/5 stars and I think we would've loved the experience more if there were more interaction with the server since we are so novice with this type of cuisine, but it is meant to be a quick casual place, so I'd research a bit before going. Like a lot of restaurants around the city, this one is rather cheap, and service up a rather nice curry. However, I wouldn't call it an Indian restaurant though, more like an Indonesian one, which certainly makes it stand out from all the other places that seem to pretty much copy all the other places. I love roti... I especially love roti telur. The roti here is magically soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. It's how it should be. When I came for lunch I had the lamb curry... the meat is tender and there is a good initial spice. You can ramp that up if required. What let us down was we couldn't easily experience the roti as a side dish. I love dipping roti into my curry but I had to buy root cenai at a minimum to do this (more curry than I needed) adding another $9.50 to the bill. The food is good! Give them a go. read more

The Roti Canai was hands down delicious! The roti was fresh and the sauces were flavorful. However, the main dishes did not impress me. I tried the Mee Goreng an Nasi Lamar with fish. The Mee Goreng was okay, and could be a little sweeter. It sort of tasted like simple stir fried noodles. The Nasi Lamar came with well made aromatic coconut rice. However, the rest of the dish was plain. The cat fish had tons of bones, making it difficult to eat. I only received a small amount of fish relative to the massive amount of rice given. There was minimal curry sauce that accompanied the fish. There were whole peanuts as well, making it weird to eat. I prefer crushed peanuts. The ambiance was clean and modern. Customer service was average. They do charge a surcharge for any credit card purchase. This is the only restaurant that has charged this fee even though my purchase was over $30. read more

The ever so popular Mamak has arrived in Melbourne (for a while now) - and well, things aren't much different in Melbourne! Packed at 2pm when we arrived for a late lunch, we were quickly seated, which is unusual for this place from what I've seen. I'm not familiar with Malaysian food myself - so I went for the Kari Ayam lunch special (11) - the first item on the lunch menu. The dish is a chicken with a Malaysian style curry and potatoes. I actually wasn't sure what to expect, and the dish ended up being a bit too spicy for me, with the kind of spice that just escalates. I can't say this is my favorite type of curry, but it wasn't bad or anything - just a bit overwhelming and acidic for my taste. Spices other than curry are more prominent than in other types of curry, as well as less creamy than other curries. The Teh Halia (3.5), a 'stretched' frothy sweet (milk) tea, was really delicious! The specific one was infused with ginger, as I'm a fan of sweet ginger tea. Although I was a bit apprehensive, it was really good! The ginger can be a little overwhelming if you're not a big fan of ginger, but for me, the drink was better than my food. I would definitely recommend trying out the Teh Tarik if you're not a fan of ginger. If not, you can just watch them 'stretch' the tea in the kitchen. The service was satisfactory, and the place was a comfortable place with a simple and modern interior - and similar to the other Mamak chains, I believe. Their rotis look crazy (presentation-wise) and delicious. If I'm ever back in Melbourne, I'd like to get one! After all, they did win the Good Food Under $30 Award this year. read more

Everyone's been talkign about this place since its recent opening. Riding on the current wave of Malaysian/Singaporean food movement in Melbourne, Mamak focuses on offering nasi lemaks, rotis and satays. Did not get a chance to try too much but the nasi lemak was nicely frangrant and moist (albeit a tad salty) with a decent side of cucumber, hard-boiled egg, anchovies and peanuts and sambal. The fish curry that came with it was rightly disappointing - it was overcooked and bland. The vegetables in the curry, however, were nicely cooked through. Perhaps best to stick to curry vegetables or try other options like chicken or lamb (tried ordering sambal cuttlefish initially but was unavilable). A$11.50 for a plate of nasi lemak might sound crazy to most Malaysians/Singaporeans who are used to paying no more than A$3 for a serving, but this is definitely a place to get your fix if you miss the food back home. My preference is just to dip it in a little of the shrimpy/chilli sauce but my boyfriend preferred the curry style sauce. We shared 12 skewers, mixed beef and chicken. The chicken was amazing, quite smokey and succulent. The beef had a nice lemongrass flavour but was a little dry for our liking. The satay dipping sauce was more on the sweet side. I enjoyed it but would prefer more kick. We also shared the shrimp paste/chilli tossed green beans. These were quite fishy and had a bit of a kick but didn't blow our mind. I'm a newcomer to Mamak & feel like I've been missing out. I could eat the roti quite literally until it comes out of my ears it is so good & I would return to just eat purely that. Having said that the other food is equally delicious & flavoursome. I called in without a booking on a fairly busy night, we were seated promptly & the service was very efficient. This place was everything I dreamed of and more! Where do I begin... with the roti, of course! :) Their signature roti canai is everything roti should be. Fluffy and light with three dipping sauces. It was divine! Thanks to the couple next to us ordering some mouth watering dishes, we decided to try two of them, the stir fried long beans and mee goreng (thicker noodles). The noodles were so flavourful with heaps of egg, fishcake, prawns, and veggies. The long beans had loads of spice without too much heat. Delicious! Next we tried the spicy lamb curry. Again, not super spicy but tender and juicy. The broth it bathed it was good enough to drink from the bowl (although I resisted). Lastly the friendly couple left us each a piece of the fried chicken to sample. Wow, even more wonderful tenderness and flavour. It was hard to stop eating! 3 dishes + the roti is more than enough for two hungry people, but we could not resist sampling it all. I also ordered an iced milk tea which went down very quickly and was so refreshing with the meal. My friend said this was the best Malaysian food he has had, beating the US and Canada. I've been a big fan of Mamak in Sydney and this was my first visit in Melbourne. As always, never a disappointment! Service was speedy and friendly. I had the nasi lemak with ayam goreng and it was superb. The sambal was fabulous and hot! You could taste the spice in the ayam goreng too. Crunchy peanuts and anchovies. I had the roti canai and the half dozen chicken satay--both were exceptional. The roti was was crispy and fluffy and came to the table warm with a good amount of curry dips and a delicious sambal sauce. I wish I didn't share! The chicken satay was outstanding--you can smell the char as it reaches your table. It was perfectly grilled. And the sweet and spicy peanut sauce that comes with it will haunt me until I can have it again! To top it off, I had an iced milo to accompany the meal ...mmmm. I'd love to come back and try a few other things on the menu too. Afterwards, I watched through the window from outside the roti being made. Sure it was quite loud and quite busy and hectic throughout the night,but the service was amazing and everyone who spoke to us were patient and friendly. They gave great recommendations and seemed to always anticipate our needs. Water was always refilled and to be honest for a fast paced Asian restaurant this was a surprise. I normally always find myself searching for a waiter throughout the night to refill the water jug but I didn't have to last night. As for the food. A lot of flavour especially in the chicken curry. I heard that the franchise was brought in by the owners from Sydney but did they have to bring along the over-inflated prices as well? I dunno how it works in Sydney but in Melbourne Malaysian cuisine has become an over-saturated market, especially in the CBD. People will start comparing the prices what would Mamak's very limited menu choices. From the looks of it their selling point is their roti canai which I admit is good. They even bothered to tear it up a little before presenting it to you which is a nice change from the usual straight out of the freezer-into frying pan-and onto plate treatment. Service was excellent btw and I thought the usher handled the queue well. I sincerely hope that Mamak does take off, there's a serious lack of quality Malaysian food out there. Having been a fan of the Sydney store for a while now I joined the throngs of Melbournians loosing their collective minds about a Melbourne based Mamak! They have been open here for a while now and thankfully the lines have died down a lot from what they once were. Still be prepared to wait a substantial amount of time on a Friday or Saturday night! It goes without saying that they do one of the best roti I have ever had. Soft, fresh, just enough crisp to give it some texture and served with delicious dipping sauces. I love the egg roti the most and can happily munch on them all day long. The rest of the menu features all the classic Malaysian foods you would expect here. Every dish is brought out very fast and nicely presented. The flavours are usually quite mild rather than the knock you out spices you would be used to if you have this type of food in it's country of origin. Feel free to ask the staff to kick it up a notch with some chilli if you are a fan of the spice like me. The prices are quite affordable which in my mind means I want to order all the more food and feast on everything (which I usually do). Mamak is not a great place for a date as it can get a little messy and it's not exactly romantic. This delicious restaurant is great for groups of friends or a fast dinner or lunch with colleagues. This place is always a favourite of ours for delicious Malaysian food while in Melbourne. And being good Friday we ordered chicken dishes and of course roti! We got roti canai ($7), 1/2 chicken satay ($12) and Ayam berempah ($17) which is bite sized chicken pieces that have been stir fried with spices. We were shocked when this arrived at our table there was so much chicken we thought we had ordered the wrong dish. The chicken was nice and crispy and very moist and juicy inside, only thing was that it could of done with a bit of salt - just felt like it lacked that element but other than that everything was ok. Being a public holiday there was a surcharge of $2 per person and if you wanted to pay by card even a debit card there was a charge. Thought this was odd and wrong. You shouldn't be charge for using a debit card. Understand if you're using Amex or American Express like they all state. read more

I ordered the nasi lemak with chicken curry. (The basic nasi lemak is $9; the chicken curry is $3 extra.) The dish looked promising when it arrived: it was well presented and there were two decent-sized pieces of chicken. Disappointment quickly arrived however. The two chicken pieces were mostly bone with relatively little edible meat. The curry sauce ran out long before the rice did. Perhaps the biggest disappointment though was the "sambal" chilli; it tasted more like a chilli sauce bought from a supermarket rather than a nice rich sambal chilli that's typical of good Malaysian nasi lemak. read more

Some of the tastiest Malaysian food you'll eat outside of Malaysia. This has been confirmed by a KL ex-pat. Mamak serves up the most delicious melt-in-your-mouth roti I've ever had. My excitement for the opening of Mamak quickly caught on in my office and I found myself ordering for a table of 10. Having previously only been on my own on Sydney work trips, this was a fantastic way to try the curries, noodles, satay, roti, sambal - we ate it all! The mee gorang is the spiciest version I've ever had (and therefore the best!), the prawns packed an amazing punch and the curries all had great heat to them. YES. MAMAK IN MELBOURNE. I first tried Mamak in Sydney three years ago and had such a lovely and memorable experience there. When I realized it was in Melbourne..well I had to go straight away! The Roti Canai is fantastic. Best Roti I've had in Melbourne. The dipping sauce is fantastic. The satay chicken is the best satay I've had in Melbourne as well. The peanut dipping sauce is delicious and the skewers are a bit smaller than at some other places, but the meat is tender, sweet, and succulent. Best. We loved the chicken curry. It was a bit spicy but completely hit the spot. The chicken was so flavorful and delicious, I could have eaten this all day. Finally we got the kangkung belacan, which is morning glory veggies in a spicy shrimp paste sauce. These are my favorite veggies in the whole world, and Mamak does it so much justice. I can't rave enough about how good the food here is. The menu seems a bit more limited than the one in Sydney, but in a way I am thankful for the lack of choices as my belly would not be able to handle it!! They are fluffy, soft, plain or stuffed, you'll wanna jam those little puppies in your gob. I shared the egg and onion roti, chicken curry, and a salad (can't remember the name). As mentioned, the roti was amazing. The chicken curry was quite traditional. Seved with potatoes and enough sauce to for your roti (or rice). [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamak_stall ] Having been disappointed with almost all of Melbourne's Asian and Indian food offerings, especially inner city ones - it seems like you need to travel to outer suburbs, to the racial enclaves to get the authentic stuff. Being located smack in the city, I had low expectations, but boy was I blown away. What hit me was that they did not scrimp on the spice at all, which is a very refreshing change from most other places which water their dishes down to suit the Western palate. Mamak's dishes will give you the good stuff, what I personally have come to expect in Singapore or Malaysia. What is really cool about this place is that they have a semi-open kitchen, and you can see their staff making the roti prata by hand, and stretching the tea (teh tarik) by hand too. This place is Eco Smart! The food is already prepared (don't expect fresh) thus serving is super fast. They put slightly above average spices, and sauce in the dishes. I have had Malaysian food richer in flavour, and served hot and fresh. Would I recommend this place? No Would I make it all the way to hear to eat in it? No I highly doubt that I would come here again. For example papa rich in qv has more flavour and fresh. I gave it 2 stars for service, price compare to quantity. Mamak is one of the best places to eat in Melbourne! The food is to die for and the restaurant is quite large so you don't have to worry about a wait. Having heard from yelpers and friends, the roti is a must try! I ordered the roti canai - the original roti served with a couple curry dips and sambal. This roti really is nothing short of perfection! It's so flakey and buttery. It reminded me of a crepe, but better. I also ordered the Nasi Goreng, a spicy stir fry dish with shrimp. This is probably the best Malaysian rice dish I have ever had. Moderately spicy, but not over the top. The portion was also very large so I walked out with half of my dinner to go.
