Laksa Bar - Soft Shell Crab Laksa.

Good amount of meat in the small. I almost finished the creamy broth but controlled myself. The soft shell crab isn't as good though. They put way too much batter!

Laksa Bar is a humble eatery that makes one of the most stunning laksa in Melbourne…read more The location was a little hard to find, away from the bustling CBD restaurant scene, tucked at the corner street of Little Lonsdale, and more precisely next to the famous "The League of Honest Coffee". I came in for a late lunch and the atmosphere of Laksa Bar will definitely take you to the comforting atmosphere of the eating street food in Singapore/Malaysia, from the Southeast Asia ornaments, old nostalgic posters and memorabilia as well as on wall screen projectors that depicts short scenes from the past. This is a self-served restaurant, where we order directly to the cashier first, given a number, get your own utensils/water and choose where to sit. There are many interesting selections of Malaysian classics as well as street nibbles, such as house curry, nasi lemak, satay and etc. But of course, we tried their signature dish, and that is Soft Shell Crab Laksa. The soft shell crab laksa come in a drool worthy presentation - with a generous portion of fried wonton, fish ball, and a flour battered soft shell crab. Taste-wise, expect a robust flavor that will jolt your taste buds. The laksa was a perfect balance of creamy, salty, spicy and savory goodness, and the crispy soft shell crab just adds a touch of yum to the already scrumptious dish. On other occasions, I tried their nasi lemak with soft shell crab as it looks so damn tempting, but sad to say, it was such a let down; stale toppings and flavorless rice.. Clearly, this is not their strength. In all, Laksa Bar is such a precious spot for those who enjoy the richness of Malaysian cuisine. The service, food and price point are all on point. Definitely a spot that's worth many return visits!

Good location close to Melbourne Central and Vic Market, staff are nice and quick and the lovely lady who is often at the counter has my regular order committed to memory. Long live Laksa House, if I had to find a new place I would be devastated

There was a…read morebig sign at the door advertising for more hiring, even there were three waitresses working on the small-sized 10 table floor already. While my partner insisted on ordering the Hainan Chicken, which arrived quickly, my order of "Hawker Laksa" took a significantly longer time to be served. In fact, my partner had already finished her meal by the time my bowl of laksa arrived. Although the restaurant has been in this location for quite some time, I was surprised that the waitresses were not taking orders. Instead, customers were required to approach the counter and place orders with a counter person there, who would then give a number stand to be set on the table. The Hainan chicken was okay, yet the fine chopped ginger was an additional $1 charge? On the other hand, my laksa was delicious and I could tell it was made with the authentic ingredients of that Hawker Street. While the restaurant was not very busy at the time, I found it frustrating that my partner and I were not served at the same time, and the wait for my food was quite long. Given this, it would have been nice for the staff to provide a clearer explanation for the delay. However, despite the wait, I must say that the laksa was well worth it. In fact, I would recommend trying the laksa despite the long wait.

Friends that have eaten the laksa say they think the spice is a little too overpowering for the dish (and they love spice). Personally though only having one dish available for vegetarians (and nothing for vegans) in Melbourne seems a little bit of a oversight. There are so many great veggie dishes coming out of that melting pot of cultures and culinary history that it seems a deliberate choice to restrict the options to one plate of expensive dumplings. They are soft, well stuffed but lacking in any great flavour. It's a order at the counter type deal here and food is brought out to your table. We had to find a bottle of water and two disposable plastic cups to drink it though. Maybe for the price people will deal with this but I think you can find cheaper and far more tasty options only a few doors down. Hopefully they will improve on their service and menu in the near future.

The chicken rice lack taste though and the soup served with it is usually just plain. They recently changed their Fish head laksa. Now they're using Salmon head for the laksa, and it works well. However, menu is limited. It'll be hard for them to compete with other restaurants around them for example, Rose garden , Laksa House and Sarawak Kitchen. It is also a shame they don't do combo deals that let us have a choice of a drink with the food we're going to have. It'll definitely stand out among their competitors. Plus, their place is smaller compare to other restaurants. However, I don't mind at all. Nonetheless, will still come back for their food. One of my good to places for a quick Roasted Chicken rice.

At…read morethis particular location, the interior was simple, adorned with neutral and wooden loving colors, overall homey but also looks somewhat fast- foody! Their menu was a couple pages long, listing from rice, noodle to many other interesting creations. To be honest, deciding what dish to get here can be quite a tedious task. Some of my favorites: + Hainan chicken rice: The steamed chicken was actually pretty common, but so glad that the rice tasted quite authentic and certainly surpassed my expectations. Also, what makes this much more amazing was that the chili sauce on the side, it was spicy, gingery and garlicky delicious. + Mee Goreng: this is what I would normally get if I'm in the mood for their noodle dish. It was fantastic! It has a nice charred taste and taste just like the one I had in Singapore.... Almost! + Char Kway Teow: The champion! The flavor was very bold and vibrant, the meat was generous. I love how the wok hei aroma spread throughout the noodle, but gotta warn you that they are true to their spicy levels! But in a way, the spiciness really helps elevate the overall flavors! Absolutely my fave here. It was a great dining experience as always; the food was consistently well seasoned, with prices that was more than affordable. The service was speedy and courteous, even on their busiest hour. My only issue here is the challenging parking situation, but other than that, Chef Lagenda is a good ol' reliable family favorite and definitely a spot worth many return visits.
