My wife and I split the shrimp po-boy with a side of the gumbo. Both were quite good and reasonably priced. Good beer selection. The glass of wine was on the rather large size, so no complaints on that front. The service is good. We were at a large table with multiple checks and they managed it all quite deftly (no small feat (sp?/ww?).

There's an inside and patio so whatever vibe you're looking for you can't go wrong. There's plenty of seating for the crew and plenty of Louisiana beer on the menu to go around. The food menu has all the classics with a few twists. I ordered the viet Cajun seafood po'boy and a Marie laveau burger. The po'boy was excellent. The bread was soft and crackly, and held together nicely with the generously added shrimps and crawfish stuffed inside it. The lemongrass shines through if that's your thing then I would suggest ordering it. The burger was also exceptional. I only wish it were bigger. The pimento cheese and candied jalapeños turned this burger up a few notches. Soft bun, juicy patty, ya know all the good things about a burger were included here.

My drink order was taken (water) and my server, who answered all of my questions, was very patient and pleasant. For my appetizer, I ordered the spring rolls. They were freshly made and came out hot and crispy. I enjoyed them and would order them again. Now the main course. I opted for the spicy Himalayan chicken, medium heat. I love spicy food, and I thought I was doing the right thing by ordering the medium level. However, it was very spicy! I did notice however, that the longer it sat, the level evened out some. Still, on my next visit, I will try the mild level to compare. The dish was delicious and very flavorful. The white rice added just the right amount of coolness to the chicken and veggies. Upon leaving, I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken in mild. I'm not sure if it's because it's a totally different flavor profile, but the mild has very little spicy. I just can't believe it's that much difference between the mild and medium levels. The drunken noodles were just okay, in my opinion. There was not a lot of juice, spice not flavor in this dish. On my next visit, I will stick with the Himalayan chicken and order it in mild just to test out my theory. The workers were very friendly and came by to check on me and made small talk with all of their customers, including me. I enjoyed my visit and look forward to returning again

Visiting Birmingham to tour the UAB Solar House, I knew we had to sample some good eats before…read moreheading home. I selected Kool Korner Sandwiches because sadly the main spot to get a good Cuban in Huntsville closed a few years ago, so it seemed like an opportune time to get that craving met. The location is a little nondescript and hard to see from the street (at least the way we came), but there's ample parking. Stairs lead up to a small front area (few chairs and tables for outside dining) and then into the somewhat dimly lit restaurant. It seemed clean inside and I liked the relative straightforwardness of their menu: sandwiches, a few soups, and some odds and ends like tamales, empanadas, and pastelitos. Counter service was exceedingly friendly and attentive to our orders, ensuring we got exactly what we wanted and offering to remove any topics we found offending. I got the chicken sandwich, while my mom got a traditional Cuban while my dad tried the medianoche sandwich. Most sandwiches (save the medianoche, which is served on sweeter egg dough bread) follow the standard Cuban toppings of cheese, mayo, mustard, and pickles on Cuban style bread; the main differentiator is your protein of choice. We were all very happy with our sandwiches. We each got regular size with chips; the full thing was plenty for me and my parents both saved half of each of their sandwiches for later. I tried a bite of each sandwich and they were all delicious in their own way. The cheese and mayo make it nice and gooey, but the bread, mustard, and pickles really make the sandwich -- such a distinct and delicious combination. None of the meats were dry, not even the chicken, and the bread was so nice and crispy (or soft, in the case of the medianoche). Although I definitely enjoyed my sandwich, I think the Cuban and medianoche were a little bit better -- I guess they're classics for a reason :) I just tend to not eat a ton of pork, but that's on me lol. I will say I didn't really care for their chip selection. It was mostly a combination of Voodoo and Golden Flake chips. I probably would've gone Voodoo if they'd had a standard flavor available, but they didn't, so I wound up with Golden Flake. I know that Golden Flake originated in Birmingham so I guess you gotta represent, but unfortunately I just don't really like the way their chips taste. I also ordered a cream cheese and guava pastelito for later. They forgot to bring it out with our meals but rectified it quickly when I went to ask about it before we left and gave me a to-go box with it. It was deliciously flaky and the guava was so yummy. I wished for a teeny bit more cream cheese but all in all it was a treat! Overall, a highly enjoyable experience here! I'd love to try some of the other "extras" like the empanadas and tamales, and of course I'd return for another sandwich too. :)

For starters, the beef fat candle was a fun and unexpected highlight: it comes out lit, and you wait for the flame to die down before stirring everything together. For mains we shared the hanger steak and the seafood fideos, both excellent, and finished with a trio of desserts -- meringue, tres leches, and the seven-layer chocolate cake. Every single dish was phenomenal, easily some of the best food I've had recently. The only knock is the service. Once we placed our order, it was surprisingly difficult to flag our waiter down for anything else. Given how good the food was, I'd absolutely go back, but hoping for a bit more attentiveness next time.
