I wish we could give 10 stars!! We found this place online for either takeaway or dine-in, and when we saw the restaurant upstairs we decided to stay and enjoy dinner there. We were grateful to be seated along the window with a gorgeous view of the water and bridge as the sun began to set. The sunsets in Ireland are rare, so it wasn't too surprising that the drizzle started up again and washed away any hopes of a special sunset. Instead we enjoyed the view we got with some delicious food. The couple next to us had been to this particular restaurant many times, and shared about the town of Derry. They were very nice and made jokes about the weather... never beautiful in Derry and daily rain is always expected. Originally we thought we would be coming to Mama Masala's for a light dinner and maybe split a curry with some naan bread. However after arriving and taking a deeper look at their menu, we couldn't resist getting separate entrees (curry dishes) and splitting a jug of Gin Fizz. Our dishes came with a side so we shared rice and a garlic naan bread, and added an additional cheese naan bread on the side. Everything was absolutely amazing and the flavors were authentic, savory, and just delicious. The service was great. If we were locals in Derry this would definitely be a favorite place to visit all the time. On Fridays and Saturdays, they even have a bottomless brunch special and for $29£ you can get all you can drink cocktails (certain varieties) along with one main course dish. All I can say is, "Be careful what you ask for!" Staff were fantastic and the view is unbeatable! The restaurant itself is a little quirky, I mean it's Indian and Italian... Don't usually see that combination at least in my experience. I did find that they seem to do the Indian better than the Italian though. Although the Italian was definitely not great, it was good. Cajun chicken was not really what I expect from Cajun but it was pretty good. The pasta was just OK. Tasted sort of like a cacio e pepe which tends to be bland. Onto the good stuff, Indian food. The chutney and sauces that came out before the meal were absolutely fantastic. I don't know if I've had a better fig chutney (I think it was fig) and the spicy chutney was also incredible. So the "careful what you ask for" part: My daughter and I tend to have a very high threshold when it comes to spicy foods. That said, we did stay away from the hottest menu items and went with some thing in the high'ish range. To be frank, we hadn't found a lot of spicy in Northern Ireland that even remotely tested our limits so we were confident this would not be an issue. I'm not even sure what we ordered but everything was a searing hot blur on both sides of the table, mine and my daughters, from then on. The flavors were wonderful but this just hit different... We were staying at the Everglades Hotel, which is a little out of the way, and we were too tired to go out so we ordered from Mama Masala. They delivered right on schedule and the food was hot. Because of other Yelpers, we were careful not to get too spicy food, and it was just right. The lamb curry was particularly wonderful. Nice blend of flavors and spice with tasty lamb chunks. We had been touring Northern Ireland and Ireland and were a bit tired of the food, so Mama Masala's Indian cuisine came to the rescue. read more

This is a superb restaurant with an amazing view over the Foyle. It's very well managed and run with the best front of house staff-I'm surprised they were beaten at the Irish Curry awards!! The Italian menu is traditional and also has an Indian influence. I had a chicken tikka pizza with a tomato base of ginger garlic and spices. It was fantastic- just like Pizzas in India and Vancouver!! For main I had three pieces of Tandoori monkfish cooked expertly and served on a sizzler with onions. The meat was juicy and tender and the sauce was a proper sauce, not a watered down version so many places serve. This had heat, taste and flavour. I mopped it all up with a tandoori roti and keema nan (again plenty of keema). For those folk who live in Londonderry/Derry you guys are lucky. For everyone else...you better make a trip!! read more

"Authentic" Indian and Italian food in one restaurant? Methinks not. Unsurprisingly neither cuisine was done very well. Not bad bit certainly nothing worth writing home about. Very starch-heavy set menu, not particularly flavourful. Too noisy to hear the person sitting across from you. A fire alarm went off for about 3 minutes at one point and no one said or did anything. Tacky decor with creepy santa dolls for the holiday season and a giant monitor with a fire crackling away on it (perhaps that's what set off the alarm). read more

Came here on our first night of vacation in Derry. We were craving something spicy and vegetarian at 9 pm on a Monday so this place fit all the criteria. It's about 0.5 mi from the city centers, just off the river. We actually got a table overlooking the river so had some great people watching. The restaurant has a both an Indian and Italian menu. Interesting mix but we kept to the Indian menu so this review is mainly for that. Their takeaway shop is downstairs while the restaurant is upstairs. We ordered the aloo gobi (cauliflower and potato In a tomato sauce) and Chana masala (chickpeas in sauce). We asked for both to be on the spicy side. The dinners come with either rice or nan. My wife picked nan and I got rice. They didn't have a mango lassi on the menu but we asked if they could make us one and they obliged. It was quite tasty, not too sweet. I really appreciated that they made it for us. By the way that he reacted to my request, I guess he doesn't get too many folks asking. The food came fairly quickly and was quite tasty. While we asked them to up the spiciness, it could have been spicier as it didn't really register for us. I guess extra spicy in the UK isn't really spicy for those who are used to Korean or Thai or Indian spice. Favourite restaurant in Derry - took an American friend here who thought the Indian-Italian combo might make things questionable but both cuisines were absolutely spot on. Service was excellent, view over the Foyle superb, we asked to customise some menu items and they didn't hesitant, cooked up a delicious meal. Ordered way too much for the three of us and doggy bagged everything to have another superb meal the following day! read more
