Italian Chardonnay because its 80 degrees outside

Mama Cella's is one of those spots that makes you feel like you've stumbled into someone's family kitchen. It's tiny (tables are definitely a little close together), but honestly that just adds to the charm. The red-and-white checkered tablecloths also are a nice touch. My husband and I split a large Italian classic pizza and a honey lime chicken salad, and both were super fresh and delicious. (although I must say that I regularly ordered the antipasto salad and I must say that it still wins ) The service is always wonderfully friendly, welcoming, and it really feels like they care. Attentive without being overbearing which is great. Parking in front can get a little dicey at peak times with all the other restaurants around, but it's worth a short walk.

We ordered takeout from Mama Cella's while in the area, and were so delighted by every delicious item! I'm still thinking about the Penne Alla Cardinal weeks later. And that pizza crust was so chewy in the best way! Service was prompt. Excited to go back and dine inside some time soon to experience the full ambiance.

It took a long time for the hubs and I to make a decision on tonight's dinner (how did adulting become one long and frustrating back-and-forth on evening dining?) We found Mama Cella's on, like, page 6 of 9 on Yelp, and ordered with a sense of urgency, given they were closing in 34 minutes. I couldn't pass up the Penne Alla Cardinal ($19), and my husband opted for his go-to Italian meal: penne pasta with marinara sauce and a meatball ($14, plus $6 for the meatball.) We both also added a side salad ($5) because vegetables. Fifteen minutes later, we were back at the hotel with two piping hot bowls of pasta, a packet of garlic bread and small containers of greens and croutons. The salad, though basic, was refreshing and tasty. I never feel like I'm given enough salad dressing (ranch, in this case), but that could be me and my need to over-sauce salads, effectively canceling out any nutrition coming from the veggies. But y'all, that Penne Alla Cardinal? Insanely good. You wouldn't think that something that looks so simple - sun dried tomatoes and a tomato cream sauce - could taste so good, but it was incredibly yummy. I had to force myself to slow down and chew to stop myself from inhaling the plate in record time. And the garlic bread was the perfect side for the pasta. The bread was saturated with butter and garlic, slightly crispy and slightly chewy. I got my hand slapped trying to snag one of my husband's pieces of bread. Speaking of the husband, he was in his happy place, chowing down on the penne and the meatballs, which he said were really good, some of the better meatballs he's had in a while. We both really enjoyed the meal, and he said the staff was friendly and welcoming when he walked in to pick up our order, which we appreciated, especially since they were just about ready to close for the night. We're going to keep this restaurant on rotation for those nights where we don't want to cook and maybe want to eat before we make the drive back down home after a day at the office. Though maybe not too often, because it's not the most economical of meals. But it's worth it!

Nice little family run Italian restaurant in Rancho Bernardo that my friend recommended to us. It's small so it's best to make reservations in advance. We were lucky to snag their last table on a Friday evening. Service was stellar. Everyone was friendly and warm. We were checked on often and our dishes arrived in a timely manner. The food was hit or miss. I ordered the clam linguine with spicy red sauce. It was on the heavy side and loaded with clams, but a bit plain. The clams didn't taste fresh. We also ordered the chicken parmigiana and that was pretty good. The chicken was moist and crispy. The garlic bread was delicious. Really enjoyed that. We ordered the tiramisu for dessert. It's one of my favorite desserts but theirs was pretty plain. And I didn't like all those shaved almonds on top. Overkill and that's all I was tasting over a plain tiramisu.

My husband's family's been living in Rancho Bernado since the 80s and finally tried out this restaurant that has been there as long. It did not disappoint! I'm just gonna talk on behalf of my husband and my mother-in-law and my son dishes. My husband got the lasagna and he said it's the best lasagna he has had (outside of Italy)! My mother-in-law got the eggplant Parmesan and she said it was fantastic! My son got the cheese pizza and he loved it! My husband tried the pizza and said it was so good. The service was excellent. waitress is one of the owners or is part of the family business. Very cute little restaurant not a lot of seating but very cute and quaint! :) So I was disappointed because there wasn't a gluten-free pasta available most Italian restaurants these days will have the option since there's a lot of people that can't have gluten so I was kind of disappointed about that. The only thing that I can get on the menu was the salad with some grilled chicken and it was OK I wouldn't say anything special at all. But my family did enjoy their meals so this review is mostly, based on their experience and not my personal own, so I personally probably won't go back there because there's nothing really special for me to eat there because I am gluten-free and I also don't eat meat but a lot of other Italian restaurants I can always find some thing like gluten-free pizza or I can find gluten-free pasta to eat

I ordered chicken parm to go for $24. It took about 25 minutes and was ready when I arrived. The chicken appeared to be filleted. It lacked flavor and was disappointingly thin for the price. There was hardly a full-sized serving of pasta, and the sauce lacked flavor. The garlic bread was about 3 x 2 inches per piece. Meh . I was excited to try this place since I live in the neighborhood but for the price, it was very disappointing. I won't be back:-(.

What a hidden gem in Rancho Bernardo! If you are looking for a cozy and intimate place for classic red gravey dishes, this is the place! The staff is very friendly and food is fresh! The Antipasto salad was fantastic! The lettuce was fresh, the tomato was sweet, and the deli meat was tasty and plentiful. We enjoyed the service, food, and casual atmosphere.

The size of the restaurant really shows just how much love they prepare the food with. The quality of the food prepared is excellent. The best seller on the menu is the Antipasto salad if you look at the menu. The salad is a best seller for a reason, it's excellent. When I visited most people ordered the salad along with pasta entrees, chicken entrees and other Italian dishes. My group shared the Antipasto, Penne Pasta with meat sauce, Chicken Parmesan, Meat ravioli and Shrimp Fra Diavolo. All of the dishes are excellent in taste, freshness and flavor. I found the prices to be excellent for the portion size. The service was excellent and the dining room was small, and welcoming.

    Lunch special spaghetti!

Came for the lunch special...super crowded..go after the lunch rush closer to 1pm if you don't want a wait. They only have one waitress working. Although she is great, super nice and as attentive as she could be it's just too much for her. There are a lot of regulars so know again you will have to wait if you come during "lunch hour". Food portions: Lunch special is so worth it! $12 for a pasta dish and bread! Large portion (way more if you eat there...don't take out) Salad $4.50 is extra...very sparse but still good. My mom and friend had a glass of wine both over $10.50.....seemed a little steep.... Overall it's worth the wait and the waitress running around.... -mom had eggplant parm...she said it was "better than expected" being that she's the Italian and cook in the family

    Nice dinner crowd on Tuesday!

Is there a private room for 15-20 people?

It doesn't appear that there is. It's a small place with the single dining area. Buon appetito!

Does Mam Cella's offer gluten-free pasta, bread or pizza?

From what I see and have read ...not an option.

Does Mama Cella's take reservations? I have a party of 12.

Not sure but they only have one space that would accommodate that many people.

Pizza Wasn't the Only Thing Getting Fired Up Outside…read more We weren't even customers here, but after what I saw outside this place I definitely won't be one in the future. We were standing on the sidewalk near the red seating area in front of Filippi's Pizza Grotto for about ten minutes finishing a smoke. I had recently experienced a flare-up of a chronic illness, which significantly affected my well-being. During this episode,I had felt the need to smoke as a way to manage the heightened stress and discomfort caused by my condition. Right as we finished and were about to leave, a police car pulled up (it honestly looked like the officer was just stopping by to grab lunch). That's when an older lady employee from the restaurant suddenly came outside and said, "Do you mind moving down? The smoke is going into my restaurant." Fair request. We immediately responded respectfully with "Sorry miss," and started walking away to avoid any issue. But instead of leaving it there, she kept escalating the situation while they were already leaving, repeating things like "This is a family business, have some respect!" -- which didn't really make sense considering we had already apologized and were doing exactly what she asked. What made the whole thing feel strange was the timing. We had been standing there for around ten minutes already. If the smoke was truly bothering the restaurant, why wait until the exact moment a police car pulled up to come outside and confront us? From the outside, it honestly looked like the presence of the police suddenly gave her the confidence to make a scene and try to draw attention to us even though we were already complying. It appears she wanted to get us into legal trouble with her making it a bigger scene in front of the police. Another thing that didn't sit right with me was that we were the only Hispanics standing in the area at the time and the only people she chose to confront. I'm not saying that was the intention, but from a bystander's perspective it definitely didn't look great. Also, I'm still confused by the "this is a family restaurant" comment. What exactly does that mean in this situation? Are people who smoke not allowed to eat there? Because we weren't even customers at the moment we were simply standing on a public sidewalk and immediately moved when asked. If someone respectfully complies with your request, there's really no reason to continue escalating the situation or trying to involve the police by drawing attention to it. If this is how people are treated outside the restaurant, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence about how customers are treated inside. It appears that if you're Hispanic or a smoker you should steer clear of this place. I wouldn't be surprised if she has ICE on speed dial.

I got the burrata pizza. This was my fault cause i was still expecting sauce but there was none. Which I kind of understand but for $19 I would have rather just got a burrata platter as like a dip. The dough was honestly amazing. Crust is very fluffy, closer to the center is extremely thin. Overall it was good and fresh but I wouldn't pay $19 for it again. Sister got the spicy salami. Again the dough was good. Sauce was good definitely a more savory red sauce. Salami was fs spicy, we love spice but this fs had a kick. Overall good I think it could have been great with a hot honey. Pizza is on the bigger side. There's only 4 slices but it's more like 8 regular slices. More than enough for one person. We both only had half and saved the rest for home. To wrap it up, the ambiance is good for a nice night out but the food is only ok for the price. Very fresh and good but I would rather spend less on a good pizza than more on a gourmet place. Next, we got a glass of prosecco. I told the waiter that I only like wine that tastes much more sweet then bitter or strong and he made a perfect suggestion along with giving us a sampler of 3 different wines which was so generous. I got to try them all and pick the one I liked the most, but even the samples were a generous size. For main course I got one of the current options for the cheese wheel pasta they make in front of you in cacio e pepe and my husband got the formaggi pizza with truffle mushrooms. My husband absolutely loved his pizza and the crust was one of the best he's ever had. My pasta was fresh and had a ton of sauce and cream so they didn't skimp at all. I could tell easily that they use very high quality Parmesan because i'm a Parmesan connoisseur and could taste how potent it was. They let me have as much extra as I wanted on without limiting since I enjoy a lot on it which was also a plus in my book. Next time I would get a pasta that's a little lighter, because it was a more heavy dish and it tends to make me feel pretty full after which is totally a me thing, but they have so much on the menu to try that I'm sure I'll love whatever I get even more next time. Lastly, dessert. We got a regular tiramisu and it was absolutely amazing. They put a ton of cream which is exactly what I look for. It wasn't too espresso or cocoa strong and had a perfect ratio. The cream was so light and fluffy that we had to get another one to bring home and eat tomorrow night! I had seen a previous review on here about someone not liking the tiramisu here and it not meeting their expectations for a more upscale Italian place but I've been to quite a few authentic Italian gems and this one had tiramisu up there so I'd have to disagree and completely recommend! The service was impeccable. Every waiter was kind and prompt, constantly making sure we were taken care of and getting what we needed. The atmosphere was also a plus for us because we have a 1 year old baby and there was enough room where we weren't too cramped or crowded in, and it wasn't too loud or overstimulating. The place was very clean and taken care of as well as the bathrooms. All in all, I loved this place and I will be coming back. I would definitely recommend Monello for a nice little date night, and don't forget the tiramisu.

We were set up in the back of the restaurant in our own private outdoor area, which felt perfect for the group. The first hour was drinks, and then the food started coming out slowly, all served family‑style -- which I loved. We tried two delicious salads, and there was plenty of food for an event of about 50 people. Next came the Focaccia di Recco, which is my absolute favorite thing they serve here. I honestly come just for this. It's served with a honeycomb on the side, and drizzling the honey over the warm, cheesy bread is next‑level. After that, pizzas came out -- simple, toasty, and really good -- followed by pasta with chicken and sausage served on the side. Everyone left with full bellies. The service was great, and they even wrapped and boxed all the leftovers for us. One thing to note: they do the whole photo‑taking and printed‑photo sales pitch, kind of like what you see at amusement parks when you first walk in. The photos are cute, but it can feel a little invasive. Overall, a lovely restaurant and a great event experience.
