Beautiful little intimate restaurant tucked away on the 2nd floor, with brick walls and a grand piano +/- live music. I have been there a couple of times. Their menu is modern australian, with a good selection of vegetarian dishes. Most dishes I've tried there has been pretty well done. Though the oysters weren't amazing the last time I went - fresh, but ?malnourished. The pork neck with kimchi was delicious, and the pork was juicy and tender. If lunch in a CBD food court isn't floating your boat and a little bit of class is the order of the day, may I suggest reserving yourself (and friends if they're so inclined) a seat at Malt Dining's bar for their lunch menu. For around $25 for lunch and a drop from behind the bar, you're sure to walk back to the office with a taste of the good life. And, if their lunch time temptations are a gateway introduction to the rest of their dining offering, then it is easy to see why Malt Dining is one of our city's premier dining destinations. Four of us dined here for lunch a few months back and were all delighted with our menu choices. I opted for the Shaved Lamb Sandwich with Fries Tzatziki, Spinach, Soy Orange Glaze, Tapanade. It is worth noting that it is more of a 'one-slice-of-artisinal-baked-bread-open-sandwich' situation than a two piece affair, but delicious none the less. If I had my time again I would most likely have ordered the beef cheek and mash that one of my dining companions ordered. It's perfectly portioned self looked like the hearty and filling lunch time decadence that is missing from most office workers life. And that's where this adventure pauses for now. The setting is small and intimate, great for a night out with your loved one. The staff are impeccable with service and speed to deliver food was great. I had the duck which was a little cold on arrival but delicious all the same. We skipped the entree due to a late lunch. The sides were the star in my opinion, we grabbed everything minus the fries and they were delicious. Wonderful spur of the moment dining experience! We were lucky enough to walk right in and grab a table for dinner. Our server was very attentive and friendly. She urged us to order quickly as there was a table of about 20 that was seated before us and she didn't want our order to get too delayed. So I splurged on the steak with hand-cut chips and my daughter got the main rye pasta. We also got a side of zucchini. The food was perfection! I've had Malt on my list to try for years but somehow just never got there. I was inspired by great reviews and attracted by the extensive Whiskey selection in the bar. I had expectations of a great restaurant with a fine dining experience and didn't hesitate when we were looking for somewhere to celebrate Mr G's birthday. Unfortunately the reality wasn't quite in line with my expectations. I like to think I'm realistic, understanding from my hospitality days what can go wrong or be a little off on some days but I think this went a little further which is why it's only a 3* for me. First up, the bar downstairs is lovely. Great ambiance, lit for intimate conversations or lingering over the cocktail of your choice. The service was friendly and quick and made a great first impression. My first impression of the restaurant was not quite as good. The greeting smell of seafood bisque was strong and mouthwatering for me and got my hopes up. Unfortunately the lighting is all wrong and I felt like they were preparing to clean up for the night rather than serve me a great dinner. As we discovered talking to the maitre d later, it's a recent change but one they hadn't really seen the full impact of. Bright sconses lighting the place like an office, not a restaurant. The artwork gone from the walls left the place barren as the remaining styling was more rustic charm than stark modernism. To the food: the current menu is 95% mushrooms/truffles so I would not advise dining here if your not a fan (unfortunately Mr G was limited to selecting the only mains without mushies). We were advised this will be changing some time in August but something to be aware of. The prices are on the upper end of the scale and the menu reads well but unfortunately our meals were not quite up to standard and had very fixable issues that the kitchen should have worked through by now. The hand made tortellini was underdone (beyond al dente) which took away from the delicate crab flavour, the granita on our oysters was icy cold but missing any wasabi/lime that was supposed to enhance the flavour. My mains of pan fried barramundi was amateurish in my view, served with peas and asparagus, very tough/gluey pan fried gnocchi and a butter sauce that was devoid of the saffron mentioned in the menu. The high light for us was the pork collar served with apple gel, Jerusalem artichoke and toasted hazelnuts. The pork melted in the mouth and the flavours were spot on. If only the rest of the food had matched the standard of this one. The staff were great about taking our feedback but in my view the owners need to decide if they are casual bistro or a special dining room and bring the pricing and product up to scratch to match the vision. If your asking $40-50 for a mains I believe the experience should be special. If the opportunity was there I may give them a second chance to see if they listened to anything we said but I would balk at the pricing to do so as it sits right now. read more

Malt bar is my local situated across the road from work. It's small and cosy so get here early for a table and if you have more than 6 people you'll struggle to get a table that fits you all. On a good day the outside seating is great but even there you won't be over 8-10 people. Awesome selection is spirits including some excellent scotch options and the cocktails are solid. I came here on a Tuesday afternoon and the bartender greeted me super warmly! From that moment on, the day just kept getting better and better. The bartender started chatting me up in a friendly manner and we had small talk while I was waiting for the rest of my party to arrive. We ordered food but stayed for the drinks. The spring rolls were OK. I thought the portion was fine but slightly overpriced. The drinks were another story. They were absolutely superb! i went on a tour de cocktails and loved all of them. If you love fruity cocktails, you will not go wrong with the Berry Blush (Wyborowa vodka, lychee liqueur, lemon juice, pineapple, peach & vanilla gomme & cranberry juice) or French Collective (Wyborowa vodka, Crème de Cassis, lychees & berries, pineapple juice & maraschino syrup). They top the French Collective with berries which is awesome. I changed it up a little bit and had the Alpine Spice (Wyborowa vodka, Jägermeister, lemon juice, ginger beer, fresh chilli, mint, coriander, & ginger). I asked if they could take out the ginger and they were happy to leave it out. While I had cocktails, the other beverage at our table was the Stone Wood Pale Ale that just kept coming! The service was great. He was so friendly and made us feel so comfortable in the space. We would have stayed longer had I not had another obligation. What a wonderful afternoon! read more

Well established Malt Dining adds to the growing trend of multi-level establishments with a restaurant and bar. Housed in an old market building that was built in the 1800s, the interior keeps much of the original feel, from the exposed brickwork to the timber flooring and the open peaked roof. There are three levels to Malt - the ground level bar, an upstairs restaurant that is aptly named "Attic" and the below ground cellar with a private dining room. The historic appeal begins before you even waking in the front door with the cursive hanging sign above door. Traversing the creatively lit stairs takes you to the spacious dining room. One of the first things noticed was the live piano music quietly playing, adding to the inviting ambience. I was seated in the corner giving a full view of the dining area. The peaked roof with exposed wooden beams have an English tavern feel, with a creative touch of a row of wooden seats hanging from the wall. Matching the ambience is a tantalising modern Australian food menu with many creative dishes of a fine dining calibre. The is also a fixed price tasting menu and set lunch menu, both available from Monday to Thursday only. I ordered the Fennel cured salmon for an entree and the Duo of duck for a main. After ordering some complimentary bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar was brought out. Side note, more restaurants need to do this, balsamic and bread is underrated. Cured salmon is a favourite of mine at the moment and Malt did not disappoint. Served with split snow peas, pea mayonnaise, wasabi sponge cake, citrus snow and topped with a strip of strawberry leather, it was a well balanced mix of sweet and savoury. The wasabi sponge didn't seem contribute much, however. The duck was an equally tasty and creative dish. It showcased two different cooking styles and parts of the duck, pan fried breast and confit leg, served on a bed of black olive and barley and a piece of sweet potato fondant on the side. A drizzling of rich orange gastrique completed the dish. The breast had a lightly crispy on the outside and a soft centre and the confit leg was succulent and tender. Both pieces of meat were de-boned. The bed of olive and grain added some depth to the dish. My dining experience was completed with a dessert of a Carrot and mandarin panna cotta, served with cardamom crumble, honey and walnut cream. Chosen purely because the concept of mixing carrot, mandarin and walnut sounded interesting, it was a refreshing creamy mix with just the right amount of nutty finish. The dish was topped with a dried piece of mandarin and a sliver of carrot leather, adding an intriguing but pleasant fruity note. A well thought and creative dessert. Service was on point with the friendly wait staff explaining components of each dish and how they were cooked. Malt Dining was a fantastic dining experience, backed by its longevity in a great historic location. read more

I only went to the bar, so can't comment on the food. But my husband and I went here for after dinner drinks, as he's a massive scotch fan and their selection was really great. I had a belini cocktail as I'm personally not a scotch fan, but my husband had a great scotch and could have stayed their all night trying their extensive selection. Cool dark atmosphere for late night drinks in the city. Only complaint is the bar staff was a bit 'too cool' and not very friendly. But if you know what you want just order and pay and leave them be, if you're looking for guidance than hopefully you get someone a bit more friendly read more

Malt's an interesting venue. Split over three levels, and obviously trying to punch above its own weight, it straddles the financial district and the Eagle Street hub. We arrived for a 6:45 reservation, and were seated immediately. The space is lovely, if a little safe, with exposed brick walls, beam rafters and a grand piano in the entrance. The wait staff were great, and very well versed in their knowledge of the menu, and wine list. I ordered the chicken, complete with heirloom vegetables and a gorgeous sauce. It was tender, tasty if a little on the pricy side. Mains average $36, and I'd wager some people would struggle to see the value in it, considering from ordering until serving we twiddled our thumbs for 40mins. Overall a decent take on Modern Australian, but I won't be rushing back. read more

From the outside, it's very easy to miss the entrance to Malt. Plenty of people manage to find it, though, and it can be tricky to find a spot at the bar after 5pm on a Friday. Upon entering, you'll forget that the sun's still up outside; the dark, whiskey-bar décor and dim lighting will transport you to a cool, shadowy place where the cocktails are delicious. Be patient waiting for a drink; the bar isn't big enough to work through the queue too fast. Given its central location close to Eagle Street, I imagine that this bar's rush time is Friday afternoons. It is open on Saturdays, though, so I'm looking forward to popping in on a Saturday night for a cocktail and sampling the restaurant menu. read more

There's a reason this restaurant is constantly in the top 5 best restaurants on Urban Spoon. Such a funky feel in the bar downstairs, with an amazing selection of drinks (the mojito was PERFECT). The service by the wait staff in the restaurant was faultless - they were all friendly, efficient and knowledgeable of both the food and wine. The pianist played the perfect background music which wonderfully complimented the sublime food. Be expected to pay more than usual for dinner at Malt, but believe me, it is very much worth it! read more

Went here for a leaving do. Nice bar downstairs and super service from staff in restaurant upstairs. Staff are extremely knowledgable about the food and gave some great recommendations.
