Us and the Nigerians probably invented shade centuries ago. That being said, I know this place is incredible because my parents raved about it!!!! They loved it! They called me immediately after they return home from their weekend trip, and had nothing but wonderful things to say about their stay. They said the location is beautiful and not very far from where they live in Howard County so they felt well rested when they returned home. They loved their room and were huge fans of the art gallery in the common area. Talking to the gallery curator might've been my mom's favorite part of their stay. She kept talking about how beautiful the art was and how she enjoyed talking to the curator, and my mom is not even a big art person so I was surprised to hear this. My dad who loves to eat, said the breakfast was fantastic and enjoyed the multiple courses. They also enjoyed that they had the opportunity to introduce themselves and meet the other guests during breakfast, their favorite guest was a woman named Ms. Gwen who was celebrating her 86th birthday. Apparently, she was the life of the party! They also enjoyed walking around the property and the neighborhood. They didn't go to the spa (because my brothers and I didn't pay for that part). However, they said they want to go for another weekend visit next year and they'll consider checking out the spa. They also said that Ms. Sheila was wonderful and they had a fantastic time and they're looking forward to going back next year. They didn't take any pictures for me to share, but I can say if my Ghanaian parents loved this place, you'll love it too! And I have to give a shoutout to Nicaila Matthews Okome for introducing me to this place when she featured the owner, Lisa, on her podcast, Side Hustle Pro!

Were given great instructions via email on how to get in and out of the house at our leisure. It was clean, quiet, and amazing. It's like old world charm and modern day had a baby. Great mixture of both decor not only at the house hit the surrounding area. GPS will take you to the front of the house at 506 Cameron Street. To access the house and parking, take a right on Pitt Street and then an immediate right on Washington Way. The back of the house has five parking spaces, feel free to park in any of the spaces in our lot. If you plan on parking, please send us your car model and license plate information.   The parking lot covers the 5 spots to the right; directly behind the house. Parking behind the house is on a first-come, first serve basis, and only one car is permitted per room. Jeff drives a large Ford Tremor and was able to get in just fine. If you need additional parking, there is a lot across the street at 517 Cameron Street or there is also street parking.   You are directed to enter through the black gate and then through the purple side door. Accessibility from Cameron Street is from the iron gate and alley in the front. All of our doors have electronic keypads. you are asked to always enter the code to lock the door when you exit the premise, and deadbolt the door behind you after entering.  When you enter the house, to the left of the purple side door is the kitchen that was once owned by George Washington. This kitchen was built in the 1700's, and the rest of the house was built around the kitchen in 1815. They encourage you to take a step back in time and check it out!  To the right of the purple door is the common space. The William Harrison Suite is up the stairs on the 3rd Floor, all rooms are labeled. All fireplaces are non-functioning and are prohibited for use.  All smoking and open flames to include candles and incense are strictly prohibited.

Joe, the owner, is very kind and hard-working...he handles cleaning, cooking, yardwork (a huge lot that would take someone minimum one full day a week to take care of), greeting and guest check-in, and accounting for a 200-year-old building with six or seven rental rooms. It's an impossible task for one person, and that's clearly reflected in the property's cluttered and only lightly cleaned appearance both inside and out. Our two room "suite" was very dusty. Out of season holiday decor, stuffed animals and character decor are out of place in this historic home. The listing photos and website are quite outdated and don't show the current state. With some additional help and TLC, this place could be wonderful again.

They also went above and beyond for us when we arrived. We got there three hours before check-in and asked if we could leave our bags so we could start exploring and come back later to check in. They checked that our room was already clean and offered to let us check-in early without any fees or extra hassle. I couldn't believe it; that was so nice of them. It let us have more time to enjoy the city which we loved. We stayed downstairs in the Shanghai room. It was cute and cozy. I loved the shower and the robes to use during our stay. The bed was also very comfortable with extra pillows in the closet. Breakfast was good. The first morning was spinach florentine. The second day was a lovely dish with asparagus, phyllo, and a mushroom sauce. This is in addition to a continental style breakfast. The sunroom has complimentary beverages available. I took advantage of the coffee, tea, and lemonade. They also have a water cooler. This was really handy because they provide a couple bottles of water in your room when you check in. It was so easy to refill the plastic bottles so we had water to take with us; that was perfect for the morning we went to the zoo. They also have sherry and snacks in the afternoon. All in all, this has been one of my favorite places that I've stayed when traveling. I've already recommended it to another woman I work with who is planning to travel to DC with her husband later this year. I'm looking forward to coming back in the future as well.

Great location, about 3 blocks from the northern escalator at Du Pont Circle. Plenty of room to spread out, it was just my wife and I but 6 could get cozy in here and 4 could be comfortable. TV, free wireless internet, excellent location and a pleasant hostess. The basement apartment is self sufficient, so we did not have the "bed and breakfast" experience of sharing, but that's OK for us.. Our host, Dana, was very friendly and, since our sight-seeing plans were kind of up-in-the-air, gave us lots of good advice on places to go and things to see. The room was really cute and clean. The bed was amazingly comfortable -- one of those adjustable tempurpedic mattresses. I'm not sure if every room has one or if it was just our room, but it sure made it hard to want to get out of bed. There is free wi-fi and continental breakfast downstairs in the morning. This place is a great alternative to the pricey hotels around DC -- it has a private, relaxing feel and yet is close enough to the Metro that it is also pretty convenient. We would definitely stay here again.

We were served at an upper level, and anyone who likes to drink a lot might be persuaded to eat at the lower level where the bathroom was. There is an "office" there that has terrible signs touting locally-made potato chips, T-shirts, and other gifts. I hope they're not relying on these as an income stream. Very nice server... with too many to wait on our floor. Service was a bit slow, but you have to accept this as par -- anywhere you go. No worries. I had the Eggs Benedict, a Boozy Hot Chocolate, and the highly-acclaimed "Donut." The eggs were very good, but the potatoes bites were soggy... might have been cooked a minute or two more. The Boozy Hot Chocolate seemed far more chocolate than anything else. Live, and learn. The "Donut" was good, but wasn't what I'd expected. It was more the consistency of French toast, very doughy, and served with whipped cream. The fact that I didn't care for it didn't mean that it's bad. The only thing I'd change in my experience was that I tried unsuccessfully to flag down our server to bring some coffee to me. We ran out of time before the check came (as 5 of the 6 had to go back to work -- yes, on a Sunday) Still, the menu looked interesting and I'd probably come back -- but probably at an off-peak time.

Unfortunately, life threw us a curveball and we had to cancel. We called right away, hoping the hotel might show a little understanding, but instead, we were immediately charged $500. My wife was crying on the phone, even asking if we could at least pay part of it, but we were told no exceptions were possible. I understand policies exist, but sometimes empathy goes further than rules. It's disheartening when a place that should represent hospitality forgets the human side of it. And in fact we were hoping to reschedule our reservations until we saw the charge was already placed.
