Was impressed with this big restaurant, very clean and had a cool open kitchen concept. Bartender was friendly and service was pretty quick. The bar had a few large screen TV's with various sports on and there is a big (separate) game room area for kids to be occupied while parents can enjoy a drink. However I did find it weird that the men's bathroom has a one way mirror that overlooks the playroom while using the urinal? A few reasons I couldn't go higher than a 3 on this experience. First of all it has to do with the "quick" service. I ordered a bowl of soup, which was huge! It came out hot and pretty tasty... but my main course came out only minutes after. So I had to make a decision... power through my soup in hopes to still have hot food when I was finished. Or eat them both at the same time... I chose the latter. For my main course I had the Fish and Chips. 3 pieces of fish, two that were stuck together, served on top of a small pile of over done fries. The fish was crispy on the outside but a bit mushy in the inside. the bartender, who was very nice and friendly, was way too busy to refill my drink because she was busy making drinks for the entire restaurant. I finally stopped a waitress to get a refill. Judging by the atmosphere and the relatively good crowd, this seems to be a well liked local place. So I have to believe that I maybe my fish and chips were just a one off. I also thought that the entree was fair priced at $15, but $10 for the soup was a bit much. (And now that I look at the menu (the next day) the soup is listed at $5.99...makes me wonder why I was charged $9.99??). Maybe the $6 is for a cup? It doesn't offer a cup or a bowl on the menu, just a price of $5.99. Shame on me for not noticing and asking I guess! read more

My brother and I got the Turkey Club and the Thai Peanut Chicken Chop salad. Wish I had taken a before pic, but all I could do now is two empty plates. Well, the salad was enough for two people, so I have half to take with me. (We are up here for work so this will be a great lunch tomorrow on the RV.) Both had great presentation and excellent taste. We also sampled a few different beers before settling on one for each of us. If I was in the area, I'd definitely come here again. The bartendress recommended the Lobster Roll. Had a reservation for today. Been here an hour and 40 so far. No food. Sat 10 minutes before a waiter even came to the table. Drank our drinks have had to ask for refills. Can't comment on the food has not come yet. This is an absolute disaster compared to last year. Won't do Mother's Day here again. Also my drink glass was chipped. Let the waiter know. He took it refilled wife and daughters drinks and I have no drink or glass now. So food came complete disappointment. Fries were cold and dry. Food had been sitting under the heat lamps while they served others. My family and I have worked in the restaurant business over 30 years. Just wanted to tell them. Dump the plate and start over. At least you'd have served hot food even if was a 2 hour wait. Oh well. So summary Food terrible, service terrible, and ambiance was non existent. Resturant is clean, food choice excellent, food quality very good, ambiance good, service good, on this Sunday night. Decided to give Mallards a second try again tonight. Last time my wife and I both got fried cod dinners; both had obviously been fried in dirty oil and were extremely greasy. Tonight, it was slightly busy and took 15 minutes to get a glass of water after being seated immediately on arrival. The only saving grace tonight was our appetizer, which was amazing. Our entrees were subpar. My wife ordered the filet mignon Alfredo; the steak she received was well done and approximately 3 slices. I ordered the Salmon New Orleans; their menu indicates the salmon should be topped with lump crab, however mine was simply sprinkled with the smallest amount. Wow - great food and excellent service - 4.5 stars! I stopped in for lunch with a friend. We ordered a lot of food including drinks, appetizers, lunch, and dessert. Every mouthful of food was good! I don't hand out many 5 star reviews so I'm calling Mallards a 4.5 - right now. But if everything is just as good when I stop back for dinner, I'll probably upgrade them to 5 stars. Much of the food is made in-house from scratch. And it shows. They flavors were all wonderful. I particularly liked the potato soup, the hand battered shrimp, and the salmon plate which had some wonderful savory items like capers and an awesome cream cheese spread. The apple pie with vanilla ice cream & caramel drizzle was excellent too. The restaurant is really big too. They even have a balcony area for special events and overflow seating. Mallard's is sadly to say not even close to the one that closed at Bayport. The menu is a regular menu with nothing outstanding and as usual at restaurants that don't have to much creativity deserts are always the same. I am not saying going to the extreme vanguard food which is sometimes too little and too eccentric and even expensive. The other issue is that almost everything in the menus is hot and extra hot. I wrote before. "Being around at restaurants for long time I am seeing more and more and more the tendency of putting into the dishes and uncontrollable amount of hot, indescribable, inexpressible, ridiculously hot spice ingredients in the preparation of the food. The restaurants use as propaganda the "gluten free". Now, the medical situation with gluten affects only 1.4% of the world population but 15% of the world population has peptic ulcer ( GOOGLE it) and 30% of the population gastritis. The hot spices like jalapeños, Chocula, schug, and many more in those quantities will produce more damage. The Celiac disease is not a game nor the rest of the diseases mentioned above. Therefore, please, be more open minded and when preparing the food leave the option, Gluten Free or Spice Hot FREE, thus everybody can enjoy the delicious food, and the great service." Hosts,waitress's, bartenders, and staff in general have little or no concept in what a bar restaurant service should be. On our arrival there was a bucket with a mop in it up at the bar next to the bartender sitting at the bar playing on their phone ( this was 5:30 PM) Waitress took our drink order but couldn't deliver the drinks because she wasn't old enough to serve drinks. Tried Mallard's in New Richmond, WI, to check out the lobster roll and the fish & chips. Both were awful. What little lobster was in the roll was chewy and tasteless; the overcooked, leathery fish was the toughest cod we've ever had, encased in burnt batter. Service was slow (one server for the whole area) and, considering the bad food, the prices are ridiculous. Maybe it's just this location -- some friends love a different Mallard's near them -- but this one is a definite no-go. read more

Honest review here. We were actually planning to go to a restaurant down the road from Mallards, but we arrived to find a sign on their door saying they were opening a couple hours late. So we did a quick check of Mallards menu and decided to give it a try. What a great find! We started off with cocktails. They make a nice Old Fashioned. We ordered the meatball appetizer thinking that if we didn't like it we would try somewhere else for dinner, but those meatballs served with home made marinara and ricotta where undeniably terrific. We looked over the menu again but were having trouble making a decision so we asked our waiter, Hansen, for a suggestion. He named three items: the lobster roll, jambalaya, and Nashville hot chicken sandwich. We opted for the jambalaya. It was great: shrimp, chicken, andouille sausage, onions and green pepper in a smokin' hot sauce over risotto is a wonderful fusion of flavors. The dish is spicy without blowing out your tastebuds. It is a generous portion. We split the dish and could not finish it. Mallards is a fun place. It is casuals with eclectic music playing in the background: The Beatles to John Mellencamp to Luke Bryant. The menu is atypical which makes it fun. With lobster rolls, fried walleye, shrimp and grits, and blackened salmon folks who prefer fish will be happy. With surf n turf, blackened filet, Korean chicken tacos, and meatball marinara those who prefer meat or poultry have plenty of options. The service is good and friendly. Had breakfast at Mallards in New Richmond this morning and was thoroughly disappointed! Service was very slow and unorganized. Food took forever to come out and 75% was cold when it did come out. Nashville hot chicken sandwich had good flavor and lots of potential but was cold when it was served. Only bright spot is the biscuits and gravy which is just as good as other locations. Other Mallards locations have been great very disappointed in my first experience at our local Mallards. read more

Had dinner here last night. Service was horrible [tip reflected that]. Had to get our own silerware and ask for refills on the drinks. Never once did she ask how everything was. Save your money. Walleye bites was our appetizers-frozen and gross. jambalaya was good, buger was good - would have been better with mustard [had to ask for that half way through my burger]. This is the type of restaurant New Richmond really needed. We have all kinds of fast food and bar food but good, "home cooked" meals are few and far between around here. I wouldn't say this is your typical steak house type vibe but it's kind of a more laid back version of that. The food is really good, more seasoning and flavor than you receive at a fancy steak house. Portions are more than enough! I like that the servers wear more casual clothing, it's more fitting for location. The prices are reasonable for the type of food you're getting but it's definitely not a place most people could afford to feed a family at too often. Worst food. Mashed potatoes were cold, lobster Mac and cheese was ice cold and no flavor. My steak with the surf and turf tasted oily and was the size of a half a deck of cards but that might be too big. Waited over 30 minutes for our server to come back to the table but I had to hunt him down and told him that my husband's meal was cold. No apology nothing. Our second time going since we moved to new Richmond and the food was phenomenal once again. First time we got the pizza and loved it, this time I got the steak Alfredo and it was some of the best Alfredo I've ever had. Steak seasoned and cooked to perfection, sauce was delicious. I can't attest to the service here, because I've always ordered takeout due to COVID. Each of the three times I've ordered the barramundi, it has been overcooked. The last time, it was so overcooked it wasn't edible. It's such a shame to take a beautiful piece of fish and ruin it. My experience with cooking a filet like this is 2 to 3 minutes, tops. I've always loved the Forest Lake location whenever I've been there on work, and this time work took me to New Richmond. I wasn't disappointed! At the Forest Lake location, I've only ever ordered the jambalaya, because it's absolutely phenomenal - one of the best jambalayas I've ever had. I couldn't help but order the same here, and it was just as good. I ate at the bar, and the service was a tad slow, but I could tell it was for good reason. The bar was packed, and the main bartender clearly had her work cut out for her. It might have been frustrating, but I could see that there was at least one bartender who appeared to be in training, so they're clearly working to alleviate that issue. We have always enjoyed mallards in Bayport, but living in new Richmond it was not the most convenient dining choice. Now that's all changed! This location is actually far nicer with better ambience than the Bayport location. The food remains excellent; three of us had our favorite lobster rolls, while the fourth had barbecued ribs.We all went home full and happy. Highly recommend. read more

Then when we ordered it took 45 min to receive 3 small items, when it was brought out they had the wrong dish. Very disappointed. High price for that type of service from a restaurant. went for a belated Valentine's dinner, excited to go for a nice dinner. We were sat and when my husband asked for a beer menu, we got a long excuse about one being made. We asked for water and I ordered a drink. The waitress (didn't get a name, blonde with facial piercing) brought my husband water, thought she would bring mine with my drink. She eventually brings my drink, no water and walks away without a word. Our menus were down for 10 min to show we were ready to order. She then took drink orders from new tables and then took orders at 2 tables that were sat after us. After she entered their orders and checks on others, she came and asked to take our order. At this point 20 min had gone by. We asked for a check for the drink and we were leaving. She said ok, brought a check for the drink and again walked away. At no point did she apologize or anything. We understand that staffing is short...and we have had long waits before, but the waitstaff has always been so great that we still enjoy the meal. After this experience, we have no desire to go back. We will make the drive to Hudson or Woodbury over your local establishment. read more
