I watched as the guy molded a giant mound of shaved ice and selected strawberry and mango. I commented that I hadn't had a snow cone in years and he said snow cones are different than shaved ice. I asked how and he explained that the shaved ice keeps the flavor better whereas with a snow-cone, you get ice pieces and the flavor soaks right to the bottom...he was clearly knowledgeable! I wasn't convinced until I tried it. It was refreshing, without chunks of ice to bite into, and the flavor stayed even at the top of the shaved ice mound. But as we started to wend our way through these dark, unlit side streets, the rain became torrential and we turned around to look for main road and lights. So here we were on a beautiful Sunday and came across Rita's and even though we just had a filling lunch, we stopped in. And crazily enough, we got a parking spot right out front. Though the road is very busy and I don't suggest parking on it with kids in the car. Just drive around the corner and park. I had no idea about other parking because we were in an area that we were unfamiliar with. My wife got the black raspberry flavor and I got chocolate banana mixed with campfire marshmallow. Wow!!! So freakin' good, and creamy and delicious. Can I explain how good it was? It was so good that I don't need to compare it. It's packed with flavor but not overly so. The chocolate banana was like eating a chocolate covered banana. The campfire marshmallow tasted like I was at that bonfire. I was in heaven. I'm still in heaven. Why? If you do, you're likely to be a little disappointed since their ice is crushed, not shaved, resulting in a completely different texture and consistently. Don't worry though, Kona Ice is a fun and refreshing treat. They have a machine that crushes the ice in one second, and another that packs and shapes the ice. There's also a dispenser on the outside of the truck that allows to you choose and add your own flavors if you wish, but they do have their own creations available that they will make for you (like my favorite, dreamsicle, which includes a cream whipped into the top of the ice). Reading from the menu on the truck, all flavor options contain no artificial sweeteners, no high fructose corn syrup and no peanut derivatives. The flavors have even been packed with Vitamin C. They have an array of syrups you can add and the option to have ice cream on top and bottom (volcano style). The ice cream is soft serve so it melts a little faster, but the creaminess is there. I do wish they'd switch to a thicker, creamy, scoopable ice cream which honestly wouldn't be a bad choice if they brought in flavors because they could sell them as scoops and give you the option for what flavor of ice cream. There is seating inside and outside, but outside is always my choice because you get to look out at the lake across the street. The mango peach was very good! Tasted perfectly balance between mango and peach with neither over powering the other. The coconut lime was outstanding! I wish I would have bought more. I chose the strawberry Hawaiian shaved ice bowl with chocolate drizzle and Moochie pieces. It's not a true Hawaiian shave ice, if you've had it in Hawaii. However, the strawberry flavor was very real and fresh tasting. The chocolate drizzle made it taste like a chocolate covered strawberry. The Moochie squares were just an OK addition to the bowl. It's $9.50 for the bowl I got. I thought that was a little expensive since that's the price I paid for a shave ice in Hawaii. I sat down on a shaded patio table set next to the market, and in less than five minutes on a 73° day, it was already almost a bowl of soup. Good thing I grabbed a straw because that's the way I ended up eating it. They do give you a small compostable scoop, which is way too small. It's also served in a paper dish, which I appreciate the sustainability effort, but it turned very flimsy since my shave ice had melted. Overall, I think the product tasted good but was a little overpriced and I did not like the serving methods.
