I can not say enough how much I love this salon and the owner, Taryn. She has been doing my hair for about 10 years now, and I will not let anyone else near it. I can say, I have tested her abilities with hair dye many time (from blonde to dark burgundy back to blonde and then on to red & black) and she has NEVER let me down!!! She is amazing!! I can't even count how many times people have complimented my hair and I am always sure to pass her information on to them!! I started going to Malihini after I got sick of overpaying at a nearby Aveda salon. Taryn cuts my hair now, and I've been happy ever since. She's quick, very open and receptive to feedback, and has always been flexible in terms of scheduling. Most of all, I'm always happy with the cut when I leave. She cuts my son's hair as well. He's five, and is always excited about going in because he gets to play video games in the chair while getting his hair cut. Bummer that Kara W. had a bad experience, but I think that's atypical. Taryn is the owner/operator and was short-handed for a brief period after her partner flaked out on her. I'm willing to bet she was spread thin on the day Kara W. came in. Taryn now has a new partner and things have been running smoothly since, especially considering they seem to be much busier these days. read more

I was going to Malihini Salon and couldn't get in one time, so I went to another place that is very well known and have 'expert' stylists, and I went to one. Well needless to say I wasn't impressed and my hair was a little brassy when it was done, and on top of that, it was double the cost and they didn't give me the 25% for new customers because 'expert' stylists do not give them and I wasn't told that until after I was done. I am only reviewing the highlights/haircut I got from the owner: after several people recommended going here, I came and was very disappointed. The highlights were placed well and I just wish the color had turned out great. After she did the highlights she had me sit under the dryer(old school ) then had me at the shampoo bowl and told another stylist(who had a client) to rub toner on my hair until the yellow is gone! Very strange considering they charged me almost $200.00 for a partial highlight and cut. I'm going to assume they don't do highlights very often? Will not go back. read more

I had my first appointment schedule 7 days before and when I got there the Taryn, the owner said that I didn't have any app. Worst and she even tried to do something just said "sorry" come on... I am giving three stars because workers were friendly and welcoming. The location is clean and convenient. But the hair service was not good for me. I went in for a cover up of my grays. I noticed the hairs exposed to my part were covered, but when I got home and flipped my hair over, the rest of my grays were not even colored. I tried calling and leaving a message about this, but I never received a phone call back to correct it or apologize. I thought this was a little unprofessional since I paid so much and was willing to give them a second chance. read more

One star only because I couldn't do any less. I walked in on Sunday, very surprised they were open. The only person there (if you don't count the mouse running around) said she could cut my hair. I asked for about an inch off my layers to shape up the cut I had. I am in my sixties and have had numerous haircuts but none, none, have been this bad. Crown in back is seriously chopped up, balance of head is uneven and just awful. Sides are different lengths, although I pointed it out twice. Extremely disappointed. I was hoping a shop that had been in business for several years and close to my home would work out but not this one. read more

Let me start by saying that I have an extremely low, if not non-existent tolerance for pain. So sure, I decided to give a Brazilian wax a try lol. Mostly because I am 8 months pregnant, can't maintain myself and found a Groupon for a great price. I was greeted by Crystal, who was also my waxer. She was friendly and kind - she gave me directions and made me feel comfortable, explaining that I would be extra sensitive because of the pregnancy and it being my first wax. Full disclosure - there was a lot of pain. More than I could have imagined. It honestly felt like my skin was being ripped off. However, Crystal was very encouraging and supportive, explaining what I could expect and telling me I was a champ. Bless her heart, I was writhing in pain and cursing like a sailor but she remained calm, calming and professional. In any case, the pain wasn't her fault - it's the nature of the job, and again, I'm a weeny. I can say that the pain subsided quickly after she was finished and I am very pleased with the end result. The masochist in me booked a follow up appointment with Crystal in 4 weeks, so I will definitely go back for round 2, as well as a facial. read more

I have very thick, long and unruly hair. I asked someone whose haircut I admired who they saw and they said Taryn at Malihini Salon. I have been going there for over a year now and am very happy. I go a few times a month to get my hair straightened to make it easier for work. They are always friendly and glad to see me. (Not all stylists are since my hair is so unmanageable). Taryn gives a great haircut, she is definitely an artist. I recently branched out and booked an appointment with Abbey who also works there. She did a fantastic job straightening my hair. I would not recommend this salon. I did not have a good experience. I had an appointment for 2pm with the owner. I waited 45 minutes after my appointment time before she was able to cut my hair. I was a new client, she never introduced herself or apologized for the lengthy wait. She only took 20 minutes, at most, to cut my hair. I was charged $45 for a dry cut with no shampoo or style. I even questioned why she didn't wash my hair and she blew it off. I later went to her website and her price for a "quick women's haircut with no shampoo" is $25. I had never asked for a quick dry cut. Her price for a Women's cut with shampoo, blow out & style is $45.00. So she charged me for services she did not provide. The establishment is modern, clean and comfortable. You are always greeted and welcomed when you walk in. Kasey is great! When you are sitting with someone for 2 plus hours, you want to make sure you have a great time AND get great hair service. Kasey does both of these. She has a great personality as well as loves to do hair and does great work. I went in for the first time when my husband bought me a face/hair package for this last Christmas. Since then, I have been going back to to Kasey because she does great work on hair (highlights and cut). She takes her work very seriously and wants to make sure the client is always happy. The price she charges for highlights, touch ups, cuts in cheaper than I have had in the past. I think this is a great Hair Salon and Kasey is awesome!! read more

I had gotten a leg wax done with Christi and it was awful. I left with wax all over my legs and when I got home I had to shave because she had missed SO much hair! When the salon first opened, I brought my 5 yr old son to get his hair cut and after he wouldn't go anywhere else. Soon after, my husband tried it out and Taryn is now his regular stylist. I had been going to the same salon and stylist in Austin for the last 10 yrs, I have curly hair and it is difficult to find someone who can really work with it. I spoke with Taryn about my hair at one of my son's appointments and soon after gave it a go. I absolutely love the cuts and color she had done to my hair! I got butchered here on April 4th. I read all the good reviews of how they listen and do what you ask. I called a head to see if they had anyone that was good at layers. They said yes, well.....When I got there I explained and demonstrated that I just wanted the layers trimmed up and keep the length. I don't know if she did not understand or if I made her mad, but I lost at least 3 inches in length and she just kept chopping at the rest until I said stop. I thought about dying my hair green and pink and just letting it stick out randomly like it was, but at 50 something I didn't think I could pull that off. So I get to live with what I have for a several months as my hair grows very slowly. So I hope this will warn others. read more

Very unhappy. Purchased a Living Social Deal for this salon. I called and made an appointment and mentioned the voucher as instructed. The lady (owner I presume) gave me an appointment for later that day. When we arrived about five minutes early, we found it closed with a sign saying she had gone to the beauty supply store. I called the number and she answered, apologized and said she was just leaving the beauty supply store and would be right there. 20 minutes later she still had not arrived so we left. The owner gave my child a very good haircut, probably one of the best we've had. But she was very impatient with my child and not very friendly. She didn't try to talk to my child at all, no small talk. She was a little too stern when trying to get my child to look in the right direction. And her phones, cell phones, kept ringing. Maybe she was having a bad day? After we left my child said "I never want to go there again". Disappointing, because the actually haircut was very good. Took my 8 yr old son for his haircut here for the second time. He had a decent cut the first time which is why we went back. But this time it was super disappointing. It was just overall a bad cut. Very choppy and uneven. He has a cowlick but I expect a professional to be able to handle that. I understand he is a kid but we paid for a service. read more

Don't go to this salon!!! Very rude! I took my two boys 10 and 13 and both haircuts took a total of 9 minutes. I could have done one of the haircuts better I must say. I was charged for 2 full price haircuts (one of them wasn't even a bang trim she cut the back of his neck; 2 curls) and she didn't even wet their hair! The owner heard the entire process and never got involved....crazy. I told Abby, the hairstylist I was looking for a new hairdresser for my boys and never even introduced herself to us; she almost seemed disgusted that we were there! Will NEVER go back and I will tell everyone I know. Such a bummer because the owner is actually quite nice. read more
