Sumo Sushi & Grill was located conveniently close to our hotel, and with a sushi craving hitting me hard, I talked everyone into coming here for a late lunch. While they do have a la carte options, I felt like the all you can eat was a better deal, especially if you plan on ordering more than a couple items. Their fish selection is pretty limited, but I was excited that they had a decent number of tuna items. I went a little hard on that and ordered a bunch of tuna cut rolls and nigiri. They do have a lot of rules at this place, though we found the ordering process pretty straight forward, and the waiter was pretty helpful in explaining everything. There are only a couple items on the menu that cost extra, but be careful. Overall, I thought the sushi quality was pretty disappointing. The tuna nigiri was especially bad, with the tuna rolls being a little more appetizing. If looking for a sushi restaurant in Amsterdam, you can probably do better than this, at least I hope. If you don't mind low quality fish, this place will suffice, however, if you are used to good sushi, you'll likely be disappointed. Food aside, service and ambiance were both nice. No complaints in that department.

But the limitations and restrictions on the "all you can eat" aspect of it really bring it down. You can only order 5 times, like 5 pieces of sushi or 5 things. They have options, but not THAT many. Also, you're time restricted etc. It just makes everything less fun and kind of a pain. The portions are also small, so I mean, it really wasn't all I could eat.

Kaiko - Loved how he cut the nigiri in half. Great for sharing.

The interior is very quite small and no-frills but the service and especially the food was to die for. The prices reflect that as you may see but if you want to splurge once in a while or for a nice occasion Kaiko is the place. We were really sure what to order so my girlfriend got the sashimi plate and I ordered the sushi set, the big one whichever that was. We even added a few appetizers because we weren't sure what was going to come out and an extra deal, since it's my favorites and it didn't show up in the sushi set. Just really the freshest sushi either of us have had, with perfectly cut pieces and laid out beautifully. We also ordered a few bottles of sake which just were randomly chosen. When she brought them out in these strange square serving bowls she told us to salt the rim. Nothing we had really done before but it complemented the sake nicely. We had a lot of funny things which came out of our mouths that night while the delicious food was going in... After trying the omelette sushi, "every other egg in the world is bullshit". When seeing that they made to go orders, "it's like putting gold into Styrofoam".

Their nigiri, sashimi, makis are all great. They are fresh, and comes in in good sized portions. However, Kaiko's problem is its server. The lady who works there is absolutely horrifying. She is always mono-toned and I swear I have never seen her smile. Nope, not even once. Not only that, it is practically impossible to make reservations via phone. Not because Kaiko is always full, it's because the lady can't or doesn't want to do her job. When I called to make a reservation one day, she literally said "sorry, fully booked" and hung up. I called back and asked for next availability and it took a good 20 minutes trying to figure out when I can make the damn reservation - I basically had to ask her day by day. Her english is absolutely horrible, and her Dutch is mediocre - maybe she's okay in Japanese, who knows. OR maybe....she just doesn't care and has absolutely zero regards to Kaiko's customers. Even though Kaiko's sushi is great, her attitude totally ruins the whole dining experience. If she's so unhappy and miserable to be working and serving there (from the looks of it), she should probably look for another occupation.

Normally I don't expect too much from all-you-can-eat sushi place, but the experience here is an exception. Every item was freshly prepared per order. You are not picking out half cold food from a buffet. You are picking 4 items at a time. The chef makes them with warm rice and crispy seaweed. Once you finish a round, you can pick 4 more, and so forth. I liked every item I tasted: Eel sushi Salmon (both sushi and sashimi) Tuna sashimi Grilled sea bass Wonton soup with shrimp BBQ spare ribs BBQ Peking duck The staff are very nice and attentive. We couldn't possibly ask for more. Highly recommended.
