Everything Valerie L. and Lisa I. have written about Dorys is exactly how I feel about her too. She was among three make up artists that were recommended to me when I was searching for someone to do hair and make up for my wedding. What appealed to me and my matron of honor (who was also scouting out vendors for me!) was that Dorys made her subjects look pretty yet natural. Plus, I was intrigued with the whole "airbrush" deal. I had no idea you could airbrush people in addition to pictures! I am glad that I agreed to do a run through session with Dorys a couple of days before the wedding. Per her request, I gave her some pictures of hair and make up styles that I liked and she did a great job replicating the styles on me! What I liked about Dorys and doing the run through was that she wanted me to be totally comfortable with how I looked. When I told her I wasn't too sure about the lipstick color, she changed it to a more berry shade and I was super happy! (Little things like that matter, you know?) I loved how the airbrushing turned out, how she did my eyes (I've got the weird predicament of having eyelids but very Asian slanted-eyes so a lot of artists don't really know what to do with me.) Something important to mention - after I left my run through my appointment, my fiance and I went to check in to the hotel where we would be married. I noticed that the curls in my hair fell flat right away. I was very worried that this would happen the day of my wedding. My hair is fickle and will sometimes refuse to hold a curl for the life of me. I emailed Dorys to let her know what happened and that I felt more comfortable curling my own hair and then have her style it. Dorys' assistant emailed me back that it wouldn't be a problem. The day of the wedding, Dorys was on point. While she did arrive 15 minutes late (which can feel like an hour for an anxious bride!) she quickly did my Maid of Honor's hair and then went to work on me. I had curled my hair before she came but left the styling to her. Ever the professional, she told me she understoond my worries about the curls not holding with the hairspray she used the other day. But looking at me, all she saw were flyaways. Would I reconsider using hairspray if it was aerosol? I told her that if she thought it was best, go for it. So she did and my curls lasted the entire time!!! Dorys also finished a little bit early so there was plenty of cushion time to go from the room to the ceremony location for pre-wedding pictures. I am so glad that I decided to splurge on having someone else do my hair and make up because it was something I didn't have to worry about. And because I did have a run through with Dorys, I knew exactly what she was planning to do and how it would turn out. I highly recommend Dorys to anyone that wants to have a professional take care of her hair and make up on her big day. Not only do you not have to worry about how you look but you will also feel really good about how you look for your pictures! PS: I advise you to use your own lipstick for touch ups during your wedding day. The gloss Dorys gives is great but doesn't add as much color as your trusty lipstick. Maleana honestly wasn't my first choice but I planned my wedding in about a month and a half and Dorys was free. I got hair and makeup done. Airbrushing was highly worth it. Stayed on perfectly and my skin looked flawless. I wasn't uber impressed by my eyelashes. I actually brought my own with me (which I was charged extra for...understandable since they had their own there but theirs weren't very good). When I got a chance to look at them when we were done with our one and a half worth of wedding & photosession, one eyelash was so loose it was coming off in the inner corner. I think they could have been WAY closer to the lash line. Makeup-wise, other than the unimpressive lash job was great! After the run-through session I talked to her about what I would change, emphasize a little more, etc. She listened. Did a beautiful eyemakeup job and the airbrushing really did look incredible. My hair turned out GORGEOUS. In fact, it was so relieved I went to her. I had always envisioned my hair would be a few inches longer when I got married but the wedding came up quickly and my hair wasn't there. When I mentioned this to Dorys, she offered extensions! I had my hair done the week before the wedding and met up with her to match the extensions. I was a little nervous about the extensions since we didn't do the run-through with them but she matched them perfectly and my hair ended up looking just like I'd imagined- length and all. And I got to keep them to use afterwards! I had to buy toupee clips to sew on to reuse them but I honestly still use them to this day (they're real hair and easy to clip in). Well worth the money to have someone match them up for me. Dorys was really awesome and very professional. Since we just had a little wedding on the beach nearby, Dorys was nice enough to let the videographer come in and spend time shooting me during (getting in her way a little bit) as well as letting us hang out a little bit afterwards on a Sunday afternoon to let us get some great shots. Her studio is really cute and airy and looked great on camera. Very laid back. I would definitely recommend Dorys! Also perfect for getting married on Waialae beach (in front of Kahala hotel)- super close by. Only took about 5 min to get there. :) read more

I am SO glad I didn't settle for anything less than working with Maleana Costmetics. Planning a wedding from so far away, and not being able to have trials of anything until your arrival to Hawaii is nerve wracking enough--the last thing any bride wants to deal with is find out their hair and make up suck for one of the biggest days of their lives. THANKFULLY, I was not disappointed. Dorys actually did not do my hair or makeup. I'm sure she's fabulous--she seemed nice enough (albeit very busy)--and I was assigned to Liz for my big day. I went in for my trial run, and immediately made a connection with Liz's personality and with very few directions, she knew exactly what I was looking for. All i can say for the trial run is: when all was said and done, I teared up because it was the first time I actually felt the rush of "wow...i'm getting married, ", and I looked like a beautiful bride. The only other time I had this feeling was when I picked my wedding dress On the day of, Liz worked her magic not only on me, but my MOH and mom. They both looked STUNNING. She did another amazing job with my hair and make up, and even with the humidity and wind from that day, my curls lasted far longer than I ever imagined. Liz joked with us, laughed with us, and most importantly made me feel so calm at one point, where I felt I was going to have a melt down (it had been raining all morning). She helped me breathe, reminded me to breathe, and talked in a soothing voice. I couldn't have been assigned a better stylist to be with me on such an important day. I was in a wedding in Kapolei and the bride hired a team of stylists from Maleana. Dorys did most of the BM's hair and the bride. She asked me what I was thinking of doing with my hair and without much direction, she did exactly what I asked for. Above that, she even did it expeditiously. I received a lot of compliments on my hairstyle at the wedding. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the name of the makeup artist that did our makeup, but she did a fabulous job on mine. I requested airbrush which - for you ladies that perspire easily - I highly recommend! Not only did my skin look flawless, but the makeup stayed in place despite the heat and humidity. Pricing was reasonable for both makeup and hair services. As a bonus, each of us received a Gold Card for 20% off future Maleana Cosmetics purchases. I've been married for three weeks to the day and I can't say enough great things about Dorys and her awesome team of hair and make-up stylists. I first met with Dorys in February when my now hubby and I flew out to Oahu to plan our summer wedding with all our hired vendors. I scheduled a hair & make-up session with her and she was very accommodating since I had to push my appointment from the Friday afternoon date to Monday afternoon due to bad weather (we had our outdoor engagement photo session scheduled during this trip too and immediately after my hair & make-up meeting with Dorys). Her studio is located outside of the Waikiki craziness in this very dated building. Don't let the outside fool you though, her studio brings in a ton of natural light which is ideal when she's trying to make you look beautiful in preparation for your big day. She also sells veils, which I purchased one from her since I only wanted to wear it during the ceremony (and it only cost me $50 bucks). It was important for me to look as natural as possible and not have caked on make-up where my hubby wouldn't be able to recognize me. I also wanted to wear my hair down with long loose curls, she did just that and the hubby was happily pleased with the finished look. Fast forward to August 5th when Keiko, Lena and Kendall showed up at my hotel room to start on hair & make-up for my six bridesmaids, junior bridesmaid, two flower girls and both Moms. I appreciate that they all showed up on time because with the size of my wedding party, it can get a little chaotic with getting everyone ready timely. Dorys was the last to show up and as scheduled as noted on our agreement. She worked her magic with me and I couldn't be more delighted with how my hair and make-up turned out. She is so efficient with her time, I love it! Why the five stars? When you have a huge wedding entourage and you're all ready earlier than scheduled, that makes me super happy. Our photographer appreciated that as well since we were able to enjoy the pre-ceremony picture taking moments without feeling rushed for time. 4 stars for my fabulous wedding artist Jennifer; but minus 1/2 a star (so I really wanna give them a 3.5) for the fact that I had to color in my brows myself, because of how much it cost to just have my MOH and myself done (there's a minimum charge AND an off-site charge-- sigh), and because (as another Yelper's already mentioned: the lip gloss was way light-- I wish I'd read that review beforehand, and at least applied some liner before applying the gloss). This is maybe as high a rating I'll ever give a makeup artist, though. I HATE makeup: somehow, most makeup artists who've worked on me haven't figured out that what works on haole faces doesn't work so well on my Asian one. So 99.99% of the time, after my makeup's been did, I usually end up looking like a 40 year-old drag queen. My trial session with Jennifer was no exception. Although, she did do an amazing, gravity-defying job with my hair. BUT, for my wedding day, Jennifer arrived on-time and relaxed; and after I showed her tons of photos of Asian female celebrities (why hadn't I thought of that before?), Jennifer ended up making me look... female... and... pretty! Nowhere close to a cakey-faced man impersonating a woman! I couldn't believe it. I still can't. I'd still recommend them; but I'd caution about the cost, the gloss, and I'd make sure you're ready to provide them with plenty of direction. I read the mixed reviews about Dorys and was initially not going to chance it on on my wedding day. After my first choice wasn't available and the trial with the second didn't go well, I decided to do a trial with Dorys. I'm so happy I gave her a chance. I brought pictures to the trial to give Dorys an idea of what I was looking for. She worked quickly, and I was happy with the results, so I decided to book her. She takes notes and pictures of what she's done so she can recreate the look on the wedding day. She emailed me the pictures the day after so I could see how it looked on camera and let her know if I wanted to make any adjustments. I did email Dorys a couple days before and asked for a few tweaks to my hair and makeup. On the day of the wedding, she arrived on time and texted me from the parking lot to let me know when she was on her way up to the room. She made the adjustments I requested, and it turned out even better than the trial. My Maid of Honor also had her hair and makeup done and was happy with the results. We were done on-time without having to rush or stress. I took off a star because as Dorys was getting ready to do my makeup, she realized that an important piece of her airbrush machine was missing. There was no one available to bring the part in time, so she had to do traditional makeup instead of the airbrush makeup that I wanted. She felt really bad and gave me a certificate to come in for a free makeup application. Even with the traditional makeup, it felt light and did not sweat off all day. At the end of the night (10+ hours later), my makeup still looked great, but a few tendrils from my updo had started to come loose. read more

I booked Maleana Cosmetics for my June wedding. It was an outdoor wedding at Lanikuhonua. My main concern was that I didn't want my makeup melting by the end of the day. Especially since their would be no air conditioning. I opted for the air brush makeup and boy was I glad I did. My makeup was flawless the entire day even after all the dancing we did. My hair and makeup on my wedding day was PERFECT. My bridesmaids and the groom (yes he had touch-ups) looked awesome, too. I had two trial runs with Dorys because I wasn't really sure what look I was going for. She was so patient with me-- I changed my mind about my hair style 3 times throughout the course of our correspondence. ...Should I do it up or down? ...Bun or pony? Well, in the end I decided on a curly low side ponytail-- on the day of the wedding! She did exactly what I wanted and I felt beautiful. The makeup was great- just make sure you tell her exactly what you want. After the trial I decided I wanted a little more drama in the eyes and no lipgloss. (I hate lipgloss.) She noted the changes I wanted in my file, and viola-- I couldn't have been happier with the end result. To top it off, she gave my Maid of Honor a makeup kit and showed her how to touch me up throughout the evening so I didn't even have to worry about it. Perfect! I had my trial hair and makeup done for my wedding with Dorys. The hair was spot on, just like the photo I brought! BUT the makeup was pretty bad. I'm not too picky with make up. I don't like looking like a drag queen, but i also do like looking like i have some makeup on. My eyes looked so boring, nothing special. I could have done what she did. I got married a few weeks ago in HI and had a truly incredible experience with everyone at Maleana. I live in NYC and knew nothing about hair and makeup stylists in Hawaii, so I booked Dorys and her team on a recommendation from our wedding coordinators at Aloha Wedding Planners. Maleana did hair and makeup for myself, my mom, and 2 bridesmaids. I cannot say enough positive things about Dorys and the two stylists that we worked with, Liz and Benji. Dorys was extremely prompt in all of her communications with me, was patient and helpful when I needed to change the time and type of services, and I found her prices very reasonable. She is so nice, too, and exceedingly professional throughout the process. Liz, who did my styling, was incredible. I had a vague idea of what I wanted and she put together a look that I really loved. She also did my engagement styling, and I loved her work for that, too! I got so many compliments on all 3 of the stylings that she did for me (trial, engagement, wedding day). She is also a joy to be around - she has a terrific personality, makes you feel at ease, is funny, and has an ability to calm you down during the most stressful of moments. Benji was terrific also - all of my attendants really enjoyed working with him, and I loved how their looks turned out. Like Liz, he is very calm and brings a great sense of humor to keep you stress-free and happy throughout the process :) One thing that I really appreciated was how clear everything was - Dorys checked in with me to confirm timelines, appointments, and make sure that I knew what I needed to do to prepare for the various things. If you are looking for the best of the best when it comes to makeup and hairstyling - especially when it comes to your wedding day - go with Dorys and her team at Maleana. I searched the internet like crazy for a stylist when I was getting married in Hawaii; living in CA, I knew I would have to search from a far, and was skeptical at first, especially since my choices seemed so limited. I was really interested in a natural look, and it seemed like every other makeup artist in the area offered up a caked-on, heavy make-up look that just wasn't me. I stumbled across Maleana and it was like a breath of fresh air. I picked up the phone and spoke to Dorys herself, and she was so personable and friendly, and even offered to meet me at my hotel early in the morning to do my hair and makeup for the big day. Since it was only me choosing to get my hair and makeup done, I did have a minimum price to meet, but I picked out a couple products from her makeup line (which are pretty amazing, too, by the way! especially the mineral liquid powder foundation) and that price was absolutely worth it. There is nothing better than looking and feeling great (and not having to lift a finger yourself!) I chose to go with the airbrush foundation, which I was very impressed with...it stayed put all day and I looked refreshed, and it also covered some unfortunate blemishes that chose to pop up for the occasion. I have sensitive skin, and nothing Dorys used on my skin irritated it at all. Dorys also did an amazing job choosing the colors she used for my eyes; they really popped in the photos. My hair was also fantastic - i went with a half up/half down look with some "beachy curls" that lasted all day, even when the trade winds picked up. I got married at Turtle Bay and Maleana did the hair and make up for myself, three bridesmaids, and my mother. All I can say is, "I love Maleana!" Everyone loved their looks. My mother, who never ever wears make up, was wowing people with her great look. But not only did Maleana totally deliver on the day of their wedding, I needed hair and make up for an additional day with my photographer. She's so sweet and accommodating. I just cannot put enough good words about her service!!! It was actually raining that day (booo) but the hair and makeup last all day!!! I've used makeup and hair artist in Houston for my engagement pictures and they are nowhere as close as Dorys' service and work!!! I have to say, Dorys is one of THE best vendors I have work with since I started wedding planning. Dorys is very talented and I was really happy with my hair and make-up for my engagement photo session. She also did a great job when we did my trial for my wedding... HOWEVER, on the Wednesday before my wedding she left me a message saying that she had spent the night in the hospital because she was having bleeding (she was pregnant). Her doctor put her on bed rest for a week and she wouldn't be able to make it for my wedding. Amazingly, I didn't freak out because she said she was sending one of her senior stylists, Juliana, in her place and she said she had the utmost faith in her. Yeah, well...let's just say, she's not Dorys. My H&M on our wedding day did not look like my trial at all. She didn't put enough product in my hair so the curls fell very quickly. The top was lopsided (it was half up) and I had to ask her to fix it multiple times. She kept saying, "I don't know what you mean by crooked." One side was flat and one side was poofy! Ugh. Needless to say, I was very stressed out. Plus we were running late. I also didn't like my makeup. It was way heavier than Dorys had done...the eyeliner on top was super thick and the bottom was a little thicker than I like. I told my MOH that I thought I looked like a drag queen! So I made her lighten the bottom liner. I should have done the same with the top and I'm kicking myself about that now. Plus, during the ceremony, one of my lashes was coming off!!! That was a little scary/annoying/stressful/distracting. All in all, I feel like I didn't look my best on my wedding day and I emailed Dorys to let her know. All she did was apologize and say that she had never had a problem before. She didn't offer me any compensation and I didn't email her back to ask her for anything. I can relate to CB's Comment /Review. She was pregnant and going to give birth 2 weeks before my wedding. I contacted her assistant..and her assistant said Dorys could not do it..So I kept looking around and 3 days later, Dorys called me and said she was going to be able to do our H&M I was hesistant because 2 weeks after giving birth seems a bit soon, but she reassurred me over and over and over that she was going to be up for it Do we did a trial run and she did a fantastic job! However...1 week after the trial, she emailed us telling us she cannot do the wedding, but her "senior stylist" could. I asked to look this "senior stylist's" portfolio...and Dorys said., that this senior stylist did not have one...but that "she is very good". Sorry but if I am going to be paying almost $700 for H&M I want to know beforehand if someone is qualified based on looking at thier previous work~! Needless to say, I felt very duped because I had already paid $75 for a trial run, when Dorys triple reassurred us that everything was going to be OK and AFTER the trial...she says she can't do it. Ohh, and I was not about to go pay another $75 for another trial run with someone I don't know is even any good??? I understand that pregnancies are all different and nothing is for sure...but she should have just TAKEN OFF for three months, instead of trying to be MONEY HUNGRY and trying to book potential brides ONLY to let them down in the end what a headache read more

Dorys and her assistant did an excellent job on our hair and makeup for my wedding day. She showed up on time and though I was very distracted with guests arriving, she was able to finish all of our hair and makeup on schedule. They did an amazing job with the makeup. Of course it started to rain during my ceremony (!). I was so worried my makeup would melt. Through the rain, the heat in Hawaii, and my tears on my wedding day, my makeup stayed put. I was happy at my trial run, but the makeup was not me, Dorys made me feel so comfortable to even nitpick the smallest details and on my wedding day I was just astonished at how beautiful I looked! All my bridesmaids and mother in law looked beautiful and they all agreed it's the best makeup they've ever had on their face. We also opted to do airbrush and it was a life saver in Hawaii. Our makeup stayed put the whole night through dancing, tears and sweat! I have beautiful photos that captured her talent and would highly recommend anyone to her. I was so nervous how my makeup would turn out and we were all incredibly happy! Love the fact that they can travel to where your wedding is so you don't ever feel rushed. I hired Dorys for my wedding several years ago and then worked with her again recently as a bridesmaid. She is very professional while easy going. Because she's also a photographer, she has a great eye for how much makeup needs to be applied in order for it to look good in person and on the photo. Dorys is GREAT! I had her do my hair and makeup for my recent destination wedding in Oahu. She came recommended by my photographer. I had been trying for weeks to book and appointment with other stylists in other salons and could never get anyone to call me back or respond to emails. I never had that problem with Dorys. I left her message and she called me back the same day and after a bit of chatting she sent me over a quote which was much more reasonably priced that the other places I inquired with. I had a trial session booked with Dorys a few days before the wedding and ended up getting stuck in traffic on the North Shore for hours. I called Dorys and she agreed to wait for me until I made it back to town. Unfortunately I was so late that we didn't have time to actually do the trial but we were able to talk about what I wanted and I showed her the photos I brought. She didn't end up charging me anything for this day - which I was very grateful for. The day of I arrived at her shop and we got straight to business. She was prepared with all the makeup and hair tools necessary for the look I wanted - no wasting time. Throughout the process she kept asking if I liked what she was doing which made me feel very comfortable and in control. I never said no so one can assume she did an excellent job! The final result was done in just over an hour - very fast for what I was expecting and I must say I looked beautiful! She sent me away with a little touch up kit just in case. My appointment was at 9:30am but I wasn't getting married until 5:00pm so I was worried about how the hair and makeup would hold up. I stayed in my hotel room all day so the humidity wouldn't affect the "do" and was sure to not move around too much. By the time I got dressed the hair and makeup was still perfect! We drove the hour out to our destination and I dabbed on a bit of the invisible blotting powder from my touch up kit and I was good to go! Never was a fan of her makeup, very "fairy" like and soft, not right for me. Had makeup and hair done for a recent wedding and a few of the girls' hair fell out completely. We had to re-pin up the hair after the ceremony AND stop by a beauty salon before the reception to buy hairspray and have the hairstylists pin it up. What a mess. To their credit, the hair was beautiful when it was initially done. I wasn't a fan of the soft makeup, but they were willing to work with our preferences and it came out fine in the photos. The bride looked beautiful and at least HER hair didn't fall out. read more

I was referred to Dorys and her crew by my wonderful wedding planner. I value her opinion greatly so I had no issues booking my wedding services for myself, my bridesmaids, and my moms. I even had a trial session a couple days beforehand and even though the studio is in the most inconspicuous little building, once you find it, it's gorgeous inside. I met Dorys, the owner, and Liz, my stylist. They are awesome. My hair and makeup trial went off without a hitch. Dorys even took photos so I could see them later. The day of the wedding, we were running a teensy bit late. Darn 35 mph speed limit! Liz and Zaira were here and ready to rumble. They were sweet and understanding and once we got started, everything ran like clockwork. All of my girls looked lovely and although I changed up my hairstyle at the last minute, I'll never regret it. It was gorgeous; just the way I wanted it. Thanks, Liz! My makeup, done by Zaira, was perfect...heavy on the eyes, light on the lips. She really got what I was going for. They both did! Dorys was awesome and I HIGHLY recommend her! My makeup came out just the way I wanted it and my hair (and bridesmaids) stayed in place all day and night. She listens very closely and gives you exactly what you want. On the day of the wedding, she arrived on time and stayed on schedule according to the timeline. She even had time to put eyelashes on my bridesmaids and put flowers in my flower girls hair, without us even planning for it. I got the flowers for my hair and the flower girls hair through her and I highly recommend that you do, since she knows what type is best. Since most of the makeup artists (with great reviews) were booked on my wedding day, I didn't have too many choices and still decided to go for this company. It turned out my experience was not a good one. The owner of this company didn't really care much about the fact that it's a girl's wedding. She did a careless job. All I felt was she wanted to get things done and leave asap. (She only spent 20-30 mins on both my hair and makeup. can you imagine how fast it was?? I remember when I was a maid of honor, the artist worked on me for more than 30 minutes! not to mention this time myself is a bride!) And she was not on time with a ridiculous reason! Plus my mascara looks ridiculous on the close-up photos. It was so ridiculously uneven and weird. Especially when my eyes were close or looked down, the bad job of my mascara showed even clearer. I used her for my wedding. I was very displease with her professionalism. She charged more than my contract stated on my wedding day. I was unaware of this until several days after (my mother payed). After a few email wars (on my honeymoon) she refunded the extra money charged. She then emailed me on my honeymoon asking me to pay for my hair trial that I paid cash for on the day of, once I reminded her of that she then remembered. I would give 3 stars for hair and make up overall. I thought she did a better job the day of the trial than she did on my wedding day. It was a GREAT experience, and this is from someone who never, ever wears make-up of any kind and has had wash-n-go hair for many, many years! I used Dorys for H&M for myself, 3 bridesmaids, mother and MIL for our wedding in Nov 2012. I had sent Dorys pictures before arriving and she replicated it perfectly for our big day. I have had so many compliments on it (on the day of, then later with pictures). The make-up, which was especially worrisome for my mom, was perfectly light and natural. My mom had had a terrible experience for my sister's wedding that was so caked on, she washed it off before the ceremony. Dorys and her senior stylist (whose name escapes me now) were patient and reassuring and made everyone in my bridal party so happy with the final result. My only problem was with the tan line coverup. The lines were still very visible and the airbrush makeup did run a bit onto my dress when we were out in the hot sun. read more
