I like this place. Its a really cute little theater just off of Madison Ave. It really fits in perfectly with the surroundings, and like all of Madison, has a little flare and a little flavor. Since its a little theater, it doesn't get every movie that comes out, but most of the major ones you can watch here. I also don't think it has a 3D viewing theater, but I could be wrong about that. Either way, this place is pretty awesome. Just like all movie theaters in Memphis, its a little pricey, but much less pricey than some of the others. Its a nice place, and deeply loved by the Midtown population, as well as by The MCA and Rhodes College students, who go their frequently. read more

I really felt like I had to leave a comment on here after reading the recent reviews on here. Coming from someone who spent 5 years in the theater industry, Malco Studio on the Square is truly a great spot for downtown and midtowners. The building may not have the throwback vintage look or mega high tech modern feel that some people are looking for but it does have a good mixture of late 2000s theater look + mid 2010s technology. The bar is a great touch; one that took my theatre way too long to add. I don't order the desserts but they're a unique addition. The price food concessions is pretty typical. Most people don't realize it but theaters make next to no money on ticket sales. It all comes from the concession. So if you're complaining that you couldn't get a free cup even though it would mess up inventory, then maybe you should go to a drive-in which can offer lower concession prices due to low operational costs. It may just be a paper cup but it's no different that asking for a free box of candy. Yes, the theater seats are a little old. That happens when you have thousands of people sitting in them over several years. No, they're not going to replace the seats quickly. It's expensive to reupholster or replace theater seats. Like I said, all the money comes from concession so it's not like theaters are bringing in mega bucks (hence so many theaters closing). The managers do have a responsibility to track damaged seats and replace them throughout time. Mine never did it simply because of the high cost. There is going to be popcorn leftover from the previous show. I was floor staff (theater janitor) for 4 of my 5 glorious years at a 20-screen theater. There's time between shows to clean but not if people start seating themselves too early. Also, if you're understaffed that day and 1 person is cleaning all X number of seats in a theater, they probably won't have it looking brand new when they go to their next theater to clean. It also doesn't help that customers spill popcorn, shove napkins in seats, stick gum to their armchairs, and leave their non-theater garbage in the rows. As far as this "just being another theatre," well, yeah. It literally is just another theater. There aren't a whole lot of innovative things to put in a theater ever since they switched to digital projectors and put in touch screens for ticket orders. This space does hold indie Memphis film screenings and seems to be a good meet up for all types of films lovers. And because of that I believe that Malco Studio on the Square has something to offer that a lot of theaters don't anymore. read more

Studio on the Square is my favorite movie theatre in Memphis. When they first opened, they were the place to see the small independent films in addition to blockbusters. It seems that the Ridgeway theatre has overtaken the Studio for the small independent films, though Studio does still provide theatres for the IndieMemphis film festival. It was fun to see so many out of towners running around when I was there on Sunday. Theatres are a nice size and seating is comfortable. Floors are usually sticky, though. Sound can sometimes be an issue. The snack bar options offer the usual suspects as well as some lovely choices from Ciao Bella. My companion enjoyed a Ghost River beer and some cheesecake. read more

If I had a choice, this is where I'd prefer to go see movies in Memphis. It's cozy, serves alcohol, and plays some not mainstream movies. It's close enough to so many restaurants that you can have a "dinner and a movie" outing without having to park more than once! I've had dinner at Bosco's followed by a movie at this Malco more than once. And they definitely serve some more enticing snacks than just hot dogs and popcorn- hummus and pita bread at the movies? Yes please. And I enjoy the sitting area, where you can wait for your friends if they're the straggling type. Also, I have to tell you a kinda embarrassing story. Once I came here with friends and we bought beers to sit and wait for our straggling friend. I hadn't even taken a sip of my beer yet, but I went to set it on the table and somehow I missed. Yeah, I missed the table. My full glass of beer shattered in a big mess all over their floor. I was mortified. But without missing a beat, the concession worker poured me another and grabbed a mop. I felt really dumb and apologized profusely, but the guy just laughed it off and said not to worry about it. I'm the klutz who spilled(broke!) my beer, and they gave me another for free. That's pretty awesome, and the kind of thing you don't forget about when it comes to a business. Sidenote: I see a lot of backlash about the No Weapons sign here. It's a business owner's choice to ban guns in their establishment. Give it a rest. read more

Malco theaters offers a number of choices for Memphians, from the teen filled and blockbuster showing Paradisio to the foreign and indie film showing Ridgeway 4. And then right in the middle is the Studio on the Square. Located in the middle of newly hip Overton Square, this locally owned movie theater gives you the chance to see popular movies in a theater free from kids doing what kids do. It also gives you a chance to watch a movie with a locally brewed beer. The parking (as noted by Joelle) is tough. The new garage makes it better. And yes, I would also like to see more indie options here. But otherwise this is one of our best theater options. Four stars! read more

I was with my friend and she was over 18. We were going to see pet Cemetery but they wouldn't let us see it. The worker was extremely rude so we waited outside. When we walked back in we were looking at other movies to see. Their was another worker now and he told us to listen to his coworker and stop trying to sneak in..awful! read more

I really like this theater because you can order booze. There, I wrote it. There's nothing better than sitting in comfy theater seats with fruit, crackers, and a grown up drink. You can mellow out and completely relax and enjoy the strong A/C. There's a little seating area when you first walk in where you can order a decent selection of food or drink -- this is definitely not your typical Skittles and popcorn place. This theater feels less chain-like for that reason and it feels very Midtown. I've seen several movies here, my first being 'Milk', and I've been coming back ever since. read more

This place is as good as it gets for me. Being a midtowner you get used to certain things and intimacy is one of them. Cozy and cool and all that is what describes Malco on the Square. You are offered local eats and even wine inside at their small concession area which lets you know its more of an adult centered theater so no riff raff of bad kids yelling through the movie. Then they have good show times and its located in the famous Overton Square so if you don't want to spend your money on overpriced movie food you have plenty options in walking distance to choose from. Its truly the perfect dinner and a movie place. I love it and I prefer it over any other movie theater in Memphis. read more

I love everything about this place. I love the decor, the ambient lighting, the fact they serve beer and there are rarely children in attendance. You can't expect every new movie to play here, nor the best technology but if you are an Independent movie lover you can always find something here. This is definitely our go to movie theatre in Memphis. Yes, it helps that it is right around the corner from our house, but it is also quaint and charming. I have never found it overly crowded and overwhelming like some movie theaters can be which is very refreshing! Also, they serve beer and wine, and have some healthy movie snack options which I can really appreciate. Try their chicken Caesar wrap. I was happily surprised, and now look forward to it as an option other than the sometimes overly buttery popcorn that you find as most movie theaters (I admit it is a guilty pleasure however). It is also great that this theatre is located smack dab in the middle of the newly blossoming Overton Square, so there are plenty of options for places to go after your show! read more

Not so much about the theatre as the clientele. The last two movies we've seen have been miserable because of rude people. We saw Les Miz with someone behind us enjoying a LARGE bag of potato chips brought from home and a girl in front of us on the cell phone..going out and coming back. AND we even waited 'til after the holidays. During Thanksgiving holidays we saw a movie with two women behind us talking so loud they couldn't even hear me when I turned around to ask them to be quiet. We finally got up and moved to the front row. We don't seem to have this issue at Ridgeway Four. I will say Studio is always clean the staff is nice. read more

I have always liked the fact that they show the movies that are less heard of and also a pretty decent beer selection doesn't hurt. My biggest complaint would have to be the popcorn in this place. It's pretty terrible. But again, the delicious beer, good flicks, and pretty righteous staff are all I need. read more

This is a great theatre, never too crowded. While you won't be able to catch any 3D movies here, you can see foreign and limited release independent films that many other locations don't show. The staff is always friendly, the floors aren't sticky, and the screening rooms are smaller and quieter than the bigger theatres. They have the old standards, like popcorn, candy, and soda; you can also get beer, wine, and fruit and cheese trays. read more

We love this theatre. We have started making it a routine to see movies here nearly every week when we used to never go to the movies. Ever. I will break it down. Staff: Very friendly, usually smiling, prompt, a little unamused, but no complaints Food: As others have stated, it is much more grown-up than other theaters because they serve wine and beer, along with "fancy" food like sausage and cheese plates. I can't comment on the quality because we've never gotten any of that stuff. However the usual movie fare (popcorn, hot dogs, pretzels, etc) all fine. I recommend walking to Bogie's if you have time to kill, though. Less junky food and so delicious! Seating: Most of the theaters (I think there are only 5) are small, cozy, and seat maybe 50. When we saw The Hobbit it was in a theatre we hadn't been in before and it was big and similar to the usual stadium style seating in bigger theaters, probably seating closer to 150. Movie quality: Great! Just like any other good theatre. Big screen, high quality sound, etc. Patrons: This is probably my favorite part. Every time we go we can expect a mature audience who actually turns off their phones and doesn't otherwise ruin the movie by being loud or getting up. We've only been during the day, so I can't speak for night crowds. I assume it's probably the same. It's never crowded. Overall it's a very clean, nice theatre. They play all the big movies, and sometimes there is a foreign film or some other indie type movie playing. I've never seen a kids' movie playing here. Convenient for Midtowners. I hate to ever leave Midtown, and with places like the Studio, who needs to? It may not have 3D capability or all those other obnoxious bells and whistles, but this is a place that stands out, when it comes to a movie-going experience. From the cozy lobby with it's fascinating selection of movie posters to the range of specialty beers and foods at the concession, it has that little extra 'oomph' that makes it the only place I frequent for films. Comfortable seating, smaller theaters, friendly staff, and clean restrooms also add to the appeal. read more

Cool place, not a modern mega theater typically found in the burbs. It is more like a retro type place (lobby furniture and decor). There was plenty of room between aisles, stadium seating and beer and wine. I like it, nice urban location and neighborhood. Usually studio on the square has awesome cheese and sausage boxes which is pretty much my reason for going there. Recently they were sold out after they told me on the phone they had them. So that's pretty lame. I hope they get more cheese and sausage boxes soon read more

This theater is one of two in the Memphis area that shows movies besides the blockbusters and kiddie movies. It's nice to have some choice and see movies that may not have widespread teen or family appeal. I agree with a previous reviewer who pointed out parking difficulties and indifferent employees. But those are minor inconveniences that I can live with for the chance to see movies that might not screen in Memphis otherwise. Thanks to Malco management for showing movies that appeal to adult viewers at Studio on the Square and Ridgeway. Maybe consider showing some of these at Forest Hill? It would be great to shorten the commute! read more

This is a nice cinema. However it is a mistake to say this is a arthose or even a venue for independent film. They started as a arthouse. The owners called it a "gift to the city" . Today that gift shows nothing but hollywood mainstream movies. Midtown needs an arthouse cinema showing indie off beat films. Maybe Landmark will open one day. Great venue but its sad they do not attempt to bring indie film to Memphis to the area of Memphis that really loves indie film. read more

The atmosphere has changed a little as the popularity of Overton Square has grown, which is okay. Staff at the box office is not personable and when we stopped at the desk to have our ticket torn (we bought our tickets, then had dinner and were told to just stop back by on our way in), the girl working the desk wouldn't even look over at us, so we just walked in. The concession stand was fine and the line moved fast. The movie we saw was packed, but everyone was quiet, well behaved, and the sound/picture were fine. However, the theater was filthy! I get it- Malco is building new locations, Ridgeway Four was redone not that long ago, but the clientele here is still primarily adults instead of teenagers and families frequenting Cordova and the Paradiso. Can we all agree some updating is needed to fix torn cushions and broken seats? Is it too much to ask for the popcorn from the previous show to be swept up from the floor and there at least be an attempt to mop the sticky floor? There's time in between shows for this reason! read more
