Walking around 18:30 in Birmingham looking for a place to eat is no easy task, as everything in…read morethis city closes at ridiculously early hours. So this is how I found The Blue Piano... because it was the only restaurant open. From the outside, it doesn't look like a restaurant, but more like a small office or hotel. The whole entrance and first look of it was quite intimidating because it looked like a place I could not afford. But surprisingly as I scanned the menu, the prices were reasonable. The waiter was helpful and attentive. The cuisine is Southeast Asian. I ordered the jackfruit and rambutan red curry and chicken ho fun. Both dishes were delicious and well seasoned. I have no complains during my experience and time here. Every factor from the list I consider important when eating in a restaurant (food, service, price, location, décor, and other random factors depending on how I feel on my day) was checked. This is the perfect restaurant to have dinner whenever you want to impress friends or that special someone, or you just want to feel posh even though you aren't. Highly recommended.

The venue itself is a little like being in someones house and the welcome you get in similar. So friendly! I asked for a Bloody Mary and despite it not being on the menu was made it no questions asked :) After a drink we decided to share one of the two sharing platters. It consisted of some sort of savory cake, top hats and chicken satays. Everything was honestly amazing....fresh and generally spot on. The star for me was the satay sauce...it was literally perfect. Just the right amount of spice! I am 100% going back for a full meal here asap so expect a full review. This is a great find and somewhere I will definitely be taking friends to.

I'm going to let you all in on a massive secret that only the people of Kings Heath probably know…read moreabout.... Blue Ginger is AMAZING! I have found finding a genuine Singaporean/Malay restaurant extremely difficult in Birmingham until I found Blue Ginger. The first thing that strikes you about Blue Ginger, located just off the Kings Heath High Street, it's it size. O.K, it's not the biggest place and I would strongly recommend that you must book a table before visiting, but to me adds to the highly personal nature of your experience at the restaurant. Staff are so knowledgeable and friendly that you feel like you are best mates with them. On the subject of the staff, the day I visited, I surprised my friend as it was her birthday. I had spoken to the waitress working there that night on the phone previously, and we organised a special chocolate brownie with candles in, and we both serenaded my mate with "Happy Birthday" to her joy and embarrassment! The plate even had a heart and smiley face made of Roulade! For the starter, I would urge you to try the Sweet Potato Fries, These are not normal Fries friends, but wrapped in rice paper and deep fried with a tinge of Ginger. You get 4 pieces which we shared. They sound mad, but need to be tasted to believed. I must warn you, the portions are HUGE! You might struggle to finish the main on it's own even without steamed Jasmine rice. And I'm not ashamed to admit I had to take half my meal home and I never take my food home! I had the Chilli Tofu Stir fry which was quite fiery but the waitress said that the spice level can be adjusted. It was jam packed full of delicious vegetables and tofu. The Pineapple worked very well with the Chilli. My friend had the Mushroom and Aubergine curry, which she told me she has every time she has been to Blue Ginger. It's that good! I just managed to squeeze a vegan sticky rice pudding which was made with coconut cream, and unlike any desert I have had before. Although there is lots of veggie/vegan food on the menu already, on Monday nights, they have a fully Vegan menu which I am looking forward to trying soon. I wish I had my phone to take some pictures, but even more reason for you to go visit!

But the food was bland and nothing that I couldn't have cooked at home for myself and boyfriend. We haven't been back, but reading everyone's reviews am tempted to go back but for a sit in meal. It's always packed when we walk past in the evenings.

I'll be honest, I'd never heard of Singaporean food until I stumbled across this unique little brasserie. I've since learnt that Singaporean food is inspired from cultures all over the world. The food on offer predominantly consists of a selection of Malaysian, Japanese and Chinese delicacies. I went for the express lunch which gives you 2 courses for only £5.99. The management team have a guarantee in place that if your food is not ready within 30 minutes you get it for free. I was ready to count the seconds hoping it would be a couple of seconds past but luckily for them, they served it ready to go in 15 minutes. I went for the chicken soup to start followed by the beef with ginger & spring onion which kept me full all afternoon. The food was OK but I would have preferred it to have a little more taste as it was rather bland.

I wasn't sure what to think of this place after reading rennie w.'s review! I was wandering back…read moreand forth: from the bluu bar, mechu, mcdonald's, nando's, and all the other restaurants in and near paradise forum. I finally decided to come here to be sort of "wild" and try Singaporian food. Not really sure what Singaporian is since I can't ever say I've visited, but now I have! very much similar to Chinese food, but ... not sure what the differences are. I'm Korean.... =P ** So, as I showed in the picture, I ordered the Penang char kway teow (spicy). WHAT, you ask? Yeah, that's why I made sure to take a picture! Don't ask me! PENANG CHAR KWAY TEOW. I'm not even sure how to quite say it, and the gentleman had a soft-spoken voice, so I couldn't quite figure it out. PENANG CHAR KWAY TEOW - 7.95 GBP It's flat rice noodles stir fried with the Chinese pork sausage (which I was not a fan of!) and prawns, crunchy bean sprouts, and fish cakes. I'm not sure where the fish cakes were ... maybe I confused them with what appeared to be eggs, though? I thought I saw some yellow cooked eggs, which I was quite happy about, but yeah! the dish was pretty tasty. While it had a nice shine, it wasn't overly greasy. The portion size was decent for 7.95 GBP. **I straight up do not like the Chinese pork sausage. I have no judgment on the Chinese pork sausage that was used here. Generally, I think the Chinese pork sausage has a very strong "sausagy" type flavor, which (personally) makes me want to gag... so, it had nothing to do with this restaurant --- just not a fan! and I learned that I'm still not a fan of it. The SERVICE was a little slow at first. It took my server several minutes to get to me, but nothing outrageously unreasonable. It was fine. My server was helpful... The DECOR is quite nice. A modernized "singaporian" (okay, maybe not singaporian since I'm not sure what that would look like!!) but a lot of nice RED decor. The chairs in the restaurant are a nice leather-like seat with firm padding. The restaurant and bar is quite spacious! The BAR seemed to be a little more happening than the restaurant area. The bar was somewhat crowded when I first arrived at 19:00. However, when I left at 20:00, there were people standing around, sitting at the bar and all the other bar seating/tables. There were a lot more people that followed me. Probably about 8 parties or so came to the restaurant after I did. There were plenty of tables ... so, I don't think seating will be a problem. I hope you take a chance and visit this place. Three stars doesn't mean it was horrible, I would probably give it more of a 3.5 out of 5. I would want to go back a couple more times before I give it 4 stars!! Happy eating!
