I wanted to visit Malahat Chalet because of the epic mountain and water views but the food and staff were less than stellar during our arrival and throughout our brunch. First off, they only had one cook every weekend. They're short staffed because of covid, but it's not just having one cook, but also the food was not good. The eggs were runny, the pancakes were a bit dry and the dessert wasn't that appetizing. One of their greeters had no idea what she was doing and another staffer had to correct what she has done multiple times during my one visit. The only thing I liked was the large glass windows and the mountain views.

This is what the house keeper did while we were out for the night after our wedding might. Very nice

I think I may be the first to review the accommodations here. My Wife and I stayed there in one of the suites as a wedding gift from my mother-in-law. We stayed there the night of our wedding and another night after. It was in July and it was a hot one out too. First impressions. The place is really nice, you can tell it was recently renovated. The view was spectacular as you can expect and it was layed out nice. One BIG issue though for summer. The place was HOT inside and for a newly renovated hotel, you would expect there to be A/C. It was bordering on 30 degrees out and it really took away from the comfort level, especially since our room had a loft where the bed was. Head rising and the like, it was pretty uncomfortable. Not like we were doing much sleeping the first night har har, but still. Can't a guy just get a little cool air? Other than that it was quite nice, the big tub at the window was a nice touch. If it had A/C it would be 4 stars. If you area looking to stay somewhere nice in the Fall to early Spring then go for it but I would avoid it in the summer if you are looking to do any cooling down.

I can't wait to check out in the morning. The bottom line is that you do NOT get what is marketed on their website. If I could rate zero stars, I would.

Even the view of the Saanich inlet that is the main draw on the promotional material, is kind of meh. Yes, it's a nice view. It's interesting that the soaking tub as depicted on the website and brochures are what is supposed to be the living room, not in the bathroom. But the view also, if you look from the tub or standing next to the large view window, includes some construction material and detritus/garbage below the lodge that you can also see. That took some of the awe out of the view. I could deal with the worn condition of the room and furnishings. The room was clean, the furniture didn't break if you sat on it. The fridge worked. The shower and toilet worked. What was annoying was that you had a really hard time reaching someone if you needed something. There is an "office". I must have been lucky when I checked in. There was a young lady in the office, which was packed with all sorts of papers, cleaning supplies, etc, almost like a hoarder's place. I checked in and got my key to the room. I unpacked and then had a question. So I walked back to the office. No one there. Called the number listed. No answer, it's a cell phone and the voicemail is full or not set up. Same thing when I wanted to check out. Wasn't sure about the check out process. Again, no one there. Tried to call the phone number listed. Got the same result and finally after waiting a while, a human voice. Got some instructions how to check out and left. It was frustrating. I just got the feeling that the owners or managers who ran the place were not very invested actually dealing with the guests or running the place professionally.

Well, yes the rooms are dated and the furnishing is like gramma's house but the value for what you pay is spectacular. Sure you could stay at the Malahat Mountain Inn with their $200/night charge and get IKEA furnishings and a tub beside a bank of windows that over-look the Finnlandson Arm. But really (and I've stayed there), too close to a noisy highway, have a bath and your rooms' humidity is unbearable and if it's foggy you have NO VIEW and your stuck on the top of a mountain. Deer Lodge is located beside the hamlet of Mill Bay, has a super market, liquer store, subway, A&W, McDonald's, Tim Hortons and other coffee shops and restaurant all located 1 minute drive or 5 min walk. Rooms are huge and equipped with Micro, fridge, fireplace and deck that looks out to the ocean. If you are looking for a place close to Brentwood College for son's/daughters events. As we visit Mill Bay every year for the Brentwood College Regatas, Deer Lodge is the ideal place, waking in the morning and watching the races from the balcony with our first cup of coffee. The prices are competitive and just a 2 minutes walk to town. The owners are very nice and responsive to customer needs. I am not so sure I wanted to write this review as I don't want to give away this gem, but in fairness they deserve all 5 stars and a couple more.

Certainly a place I would stay at when back in the area and in need of a place to stay. The rooms are furnished, recently refreshed and the bathroom looks new. The linens seemed clean as one would hope! Breakfast, well, it's a gift with purchase and certainly not anything to write home about. While I understand some of these chain type hotel breakfasts can be the same, most will at least change it up and rotate. Every single day was the same thing. The second was the soft, distant piano music as if someone was in another part of the hotel offering a welcoming serenade. Then I notice the decor is perfect as is the architecture. I would not have been surprised if an ancient Majordomo or Concierge came out of some hidden nook to greet me. The exterior and interior appearance is perfect. The people were great! Always right there to assist. Our room was super clean and well maintained and the bed was great (if a little high for my short wife). I had a couple of requests after we arrived that were handled promptly and with ease. Breakfast was attended to by a charming hostess trying to anticipate our every need. Not the largest selection, but certainly more than adequate in a clean and pleasant library setting with an inviting fireplace. Disappointingly, they'd lost their old Bassett Hound "Waddling Dog" earlier this year. Pictures of and referrences to him were all about still. Connected inside the hotel was a great local Pub offering local beers & ciders plus tasty foods. We had a lunch and a dinner there. Again, here the staff was super attentive. Probably the most surprising of all was the nameplate, Quality Inn, which I think of as third tier accomodations. THIS was absolutely on par or even better than some Choice or Clarion properties I have stayed in.
