I think this place is more aptly named a bed and breakfast rather than an inn or hotel establishment, but that's just my take on it. The Assistant Manager was pretty rude when he figured out that I only had a debit card to place a reservation, and when I finally booked the Baker suite for a night, they placed me in the Carroway suite, which they claimed was an upgrade. Note, the Victorian furniture looks and feel authentic, but the place is old and run down-the wall fixtures, room amenities, shower head, bathtub all look a bit rusted, old and dubiously clean. The view was awful-neither an ocean or garden view as their website attests to, and the rooms don't look as beautiful as the pictures. When I was unable to connect to their Wifi, the front desk guy explained to me that it was difficult sometimes to get reception. Same problem when I brought my laptop down to the lobby area and tried to pick up a signal. In the morning, the Assistant Manager, whom I confirmed was the same guy who was so inhospitable to me on the phone, asked me how my stay was, I told him I had a pleasant stay. I then asked for the free continental breakfast that went with my room, and when they took simply forever just to bring up a fruit salad (the only thing I ordered), I left without breakfast. There is also no room service for food after 7:30pm, I found and I had to order out to a local Japanese restaurant. The same Assistant manager insisted on taking the information to my debit card to charge any other room fees I may have accrued, even though they already had my aunt's credit card information to pay for the room. During my stay, I walked over to the Willow Stream Spa at The Fairmont Empress Hotel, and received a far more warm welcome. I think I'll stay there next if and when I ever return to Vancouver Island. The city of Victoria is well worth a visit, but I wouldn't recommend staying at The Gatsby Mansion. Doubly regretful, since I love Fitzgerald and anticipated a thrilling experience on different levels. The Gatsby Mansion (Belleville Park), I found, was not originally named thusly so, and the small brochure detailing the history of the establishment didn't provide a reason why it was named after Fitzy's novel. :( read more
