So much Love for Malaga Springs Winery that I got on the waitlist to get involved in the wine club! We stumbled upon Malaga Springs Winery a few years ago while camping about an hour away. There was a major accident blocking the thoroughfare and we had to take a detour over the mountain through the sno park. This significant detour gave us an opportunity to see landscape we wouldn't have known existed. Unfortunately, there was a food truck that day and the accident meant the food truck and winery had many fewer visitors than anticipated. So they were really glad to see us. We met Al, the man who owns the place with his wife Kathy. Through our tasting and eating, we began learning about the Malaga Springs Winery story. It began our love affair with the place. Every summer since, we make our way to the winery bringing new people with us almost every time. I wish everyone who made their way there was required to read the history of the place, how it all came to be, before they began their tasting and nibbling. It would really enhance their experience. I think it's so important I'm adding it here: MALAGA SPRINGS WINERY HISTORY The happy circumstance of Kathy and me finding this site, as well as learning that the area got its name from grapes planted in the late 1800's as the railroad was being constructed to Seattle, was another stroke of luck. We were lucky again to have found, after a long search, what we believe to be grape plants from the original stock. The owners have let us take cuttings, and we are attempting to start a small vineyard from these cuttings, with the aim of producing what would have been the local wine years ago. In 2010 we opened our tasting room, and as people have discovered us, our traffic through it has increased as has the production from the grapes, as they mature and come into full bearing. Our sustainable straw bale buildings, as well as our farming styles are well suited to the natural environment, with all the wildflowers and critters still at home in the mostly undisturbed valley grasses. In 2010, we opened our new and dedicated tasting room to handle the increased visitation, and also to give us more flexibility with large groups and events. As in all our buildings and grounds, Kathy's design skills and artistic sensibilities have created beautiful and unique spaces that speak to our vision of and love for the natural world. GEOLOGY Malaga Springs Winery came about as the result of some happy circumstances, historical cataclysms and just plain good luck. The virgin soils, which form the backbone of the winemaking enterprise, were deposited as a result of the glacial Lake Missoula floods near the end of the last ice age. Their unique nature, both mineralogically and how they hold moisture, is part of the key to why our grapes produce such dark, complex and balanced reds, and luscious, floral and fruity whites. The spectacular basalt cliffs that literally form our back fence also perform a double function; they are solar collectors during the day and heating during the night and early morning hours. They also underlie the deposited soils, so that the grapes roots penetrate and surround this terrific source of minerality. Al and Kathy's wines are delicious, affordable, and made with love. Everything about this place is made with love. Unpretentious. Friendly. Human vibe. Genuineness. Authenticity. So many adjectives I use to describe Malaga Springs Winery, Al, and Kathy. Unlike most other wineries in Chelan, Wenatchee, and there area, Al and Kathy don't hire a marketing crew and they don't toot their own horn. They let their space and their wines speak for itself. Because you have to go there on purpose to find them, they are underrepresented and still folks don't know about them. They're found word of mouth. What a lovely winery. My husbands family is from Malaga, Spain so of course we had to come here and check it out. Al was lovely and there were so many friendly locals in there who gave us wonderful traveling tips we ended up driving the north cascade loop towards Canada at the suggestion of others there which was a lovely diversion on our trip. Al and my husband discussed the special grape Al has which is near and dear to my husband that until meeting Al he could t have imagined grew in the US. It was a really special experience for us. I really enjoyed the Malbec and the Viognier. This was 1 of 2 places we hit that day and it was a great day!! We wish Al and Kathy much continued success!!! Thanks so much. read more

There are a lot of interesting wineries in the Chelan/Wenatchee area. But to me, Malaga Springs is special. The first time we went, there was a road closure, so we had to travel on narrow roads over a mountain, so it made it feel very adventurous. And then the wines were nice too. Now, even with normal traffic, the road to Malaga Springs still feel like a small adventure, with narrow winding roads, some which are gravel. But what makes it extra special is that Al and Kathy built the place from scratch. That means planting the grapes, building the buildings, and creating the wines. On top of that they do most of the work themselves. How they manage is beyond me. But the wines are varied and good. The property is beautiful. Al and Kathy are friendly, as are many of the regular clients we have met on several occasions. read more

If you are looking for a beautiful setting and a relaxed atmosphere, then this is the place to be. If you are looking for a warm and welcoming environment, then I would not recommend this place. The gentleman that works the tasting room had nothing to offer and we had to pry information out of him. I don't understands how you can work in customer service and have the personality of a cold fish. Unfortunately, this place does not warrant a second chance. read more

Excellent wines in a lovely setting, but the drive up the gravel, dusty road is not for everyone. The wines are worth the drive. The Zin port is outstanding. Winemaker Al was informative and patient, answering our technical questions with understandable responses. read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE. Guy here was so beyond rude I would NEVER come back. He was insulting, rude, inconsiderate and didn't tell us anything about the wines. Their "tastes" were literally a spit of wine it's a joke. DON'T come here. Unfortunate because the property is beautiful but the service is crap. read more

The road to this winery is very off putting .. Signs posted along the road state private property not inviting but I suppose that keeps out those not serious about the final destination. Countryside, venue itself pristine. Wine tastings offered were a complete variety and tasty. The value was valid in light of the discount when a full bottle was purchased. However.. The owner and his wife are very unwelcoming almost to the point of rudeness. Try as we might to engage in conversation we were met with sarcasm and aloofness. Perhaps it was obvious that we were just passing through (allthough one in our party is a local and I can guarantee she will not return nor will any of her many friends now) because two other patrons who were obviously regulars were greeted in a much more gregarious manner. So..just a caveat for travelers.. Maybe choose a more deserving establishment. read more

We recently visited Malaga Springs during the Red Wine & Chocolate event. We were here a few years before and decided that we had to visit again! We spent quite a bit of time tasting the wines and chatting with the winemaker, Al. He has also dabbled with brewing and distilling, which my husband is also interested in, so they had a great time discussing the process. After the tasting, we each enjoyed a glass of wine as we chatted. The wines were good, and we ended up coming away with a few bottles. It is quite a drive and hidden in the hills, but it is definitely worth it! There was still snow on the ground when we visited, and Al took a great photo of us outside the winery. Great fun ! The owner is on site to greet you, and share the story of their Wines. Husband and Wife run winery. Malga Springs Winery is worth seeking out. Also there are a couple wineries in the neighborhood :) The wines are great a varied, I'm not a wine buff but the folks I was with are. We left with a mixed case. They also have a helicopter to shuttle you from Winery to Winery for a great price. read more

Such an amazing venue with wines that were perfect! We had never been here, but chose to visit with some friends from out of town....best decision ever! The wines were outstanding, the grounds amazing! We smartly brought a picnic...... and were encouraged by the wine maker, to enjoy the grounds...no better place for their wine, outdoor space and our food! Dear Residents of the Wenatchee Valley, If you have not yet made the journey out to the Malaga Springs Winery -- down the windy Cathedral Rock Road out in the Malaga foothills -- you are missing something sublime!!! The winery grounds are made up of 40+ acres of vineyard and exotic, pristinely-landscaped gardens with breathtaking views of the basalt cliffs and the Columbia River Valley. The tasting room is inside a Spanish-style, rust orange stucco structure that displays elegant Indo-European decor (thanks to the winemaker's wife), delicate pottery made by the winemaker himself (and he doesn't call himself an artist!?), and barrels and barrels of wine... As if the ambiance wasn't enough to draw you to this inconspicuous treasure, the wines are truly superb...the reds in particular (which for the most part, remind me of dry, Italian-style reds)! The number of varietals offered is extensive, especially for such a small winery (around 400 cases per year). Pal Al makes it all -- luxurious Zins (buy the '07 and try '09 from the barrel), both bold and soft Cabs (Sauvignon & Franc), complex Syrahs, and a few off-the-beaten-path varietals, including a soft Beaujolais and a Sangiovese! The whites deserve recognition as well -- the Chenin Blanc was my favorite (it was the driest), but the Viognier and Muscat Canelli offer a well-structured, off-dry white wine for a sweeter palate. Yesterday, My friends and I drove out to this winery. It is a nice drive from Wenatchee. The owner "Al" has a great personality, and seems to be a wealth of knowledge, but is also down to earth. The tasting was free. The wine was great, and the prices were completely affordable. Al and his wife Kat built the place from the ground up, he also makes pottery. I have been to more wineries than I can count, and being in the industry I would highly recommend this place to people who want a good experience, not just to get snockered. read more

Thoroughly disappointed! Drove to the winery on 7/31 with the intention of doing a tasting since the winery gets good reviews. Winery opens at 12:00 pm and we had arrived a little early and are sitting in the parking lot killing time until it opens. About 20 yards from us we observe a teenage boy with red hair to be walking in the grass and stop. The teenage boy pulls up his shirt and pulls down his shorts he is wearing and begins to urinate in the grass. We are shocked and amazed! We assume the teenage boy works at the winery because he goes over to the main entrance and enters the winery. Let me remind you, he has not washed his hands since he went to the bathroom. The teenage boy after about 15 seconds in the winery exits with a adult male we assume to be one of the owners or management of the winery? For health reasons we chose not to do a tasting and promptly left the premise. read more

It's a bit of a drive up a windy small dirt road but worth the visit. This location and the Martin Scott Winery were our backup plan after the Chelan/Manson fires halted plan A. Next, time, these will be our plan A. The setting is beautiful (grape plants, beautiful gardens, beautiful architechture). The person serving our large, anannouced group our tasting was very friendly. The tasting was free and we found a few favorite wines to bring back home. read more

My wife and have visited Malaga Springs a couple of times. We Have also visited several other wineries in CA, OR, WA and ID. The wine is exceptional! This vineyard is producing wine as good, or better, than any we have tasted, including Napa. Unlike Napa valley, the wine is tasted with no pretense or pressure. They were working on a new tasting room when we were there in 2016 that looked impressive. If you have a day in Wenatchee and like wine check this place out. read more

Worth the drive! This winery is located high in the hills and on a dirt winding road, but it is a hidden gem to visit. The winemarker, Al, is very friendly, knowledgeable, and the time with him tasting flew by. It was very interesting to hear the history and the process of building the tasting room - ask about it when you visit! We came away with 3 wonderful bottles to enjoy... and then we will visit again! read more

A beautiful ride up a winding road, down a winding dirt road, up and up, small signs, then you get there, and it feels as if you are in New Mexico,the grass packed stucco covered tasting room right in the winery, barrels all around, handmade pottery, flowers, and then there is the winemaker Al. What a guy, makes really fine tanany reds, and a good viognier.Opening any bottle you would like to taste, and the prices are very reasonable. A long winding washboarded gravel road of a drive only to find out they were closed. Posting your hours on your website is my suggestion.

Others have commented on the drive to the winery and the grounds so I will focus on what is most important - the juice! The first pour, a Cab Franc, didn't suit me but it played set up to my favorite of the bunch, the 2007 Reserve Syrah. Another favorite was the 2009 Malbec. The others were all solid and I do mean there were a bunch. A great thing about Al was that he poured every wine he had for sale. What a great idea for a tasting room, letting customers try all of the wine for sale before they have to obligate to a bottle. This does not happen at every tasting room in the area. read more
