Sukiyaki Soup Base, Spicy Dry Mixed Pot
    Ruby C.

I tried mala tang for the first time at Mala Town. I came back to satisfy my hot pot cravings, and it hit the spot again! With mala tang spots popping up everywhere, Mala Town still tops my list. It's only $14.99 per pound. I like the premium ingredients and their super clean self-serve setup. I've been to both their Upper West Side and Jersey City locations. The JC one is located at a food hall inside Harborside JC with ample seatings and restrooms. Lunch special: Get 10% off for two, and 15% off for three. Available Mon to Fri 11:30 AM - 4 PM. *Spicy Mixed Dry Pot 醇香麻辣拌 I highly recommend their dry pot. It's a brothless dish made with satay sauce, bursting with sweet and savory peanut flavor. It's the perfect summer alternative if you're craving hotpot but don't want to sweat through the meal. It was spicier than I expected, even though I chose the mild level!  To cool off the spice, I got their old Beijing yogurt (老北京酸奶). It is creamy, slightly tangy, and not too sweet. So good I could drink it every day. *Sukiyaki Soup Base 壽喜燒湯底 If you're sensitive to heat, their sukiyaki broth is a great option. They also offer other soup bases like beef bone broth, tom yum, and tomato. The meat quality is top-notch, and they refresh the toppings regularly with new batches. My favorites were the wagyu, garlic beef, and mala beef.

This is an interesting place where you can build your own hotpot by picking your own ingredients. There are a ton of them to choose from and it can be a bit overwhelming. The servings with the broth are enormous! I liked what I picked, but it was a bit hard to eat. I think I will try it again as the concept is neat and I probably have to figure out what to include to make my experience better the next time.

The food and concept are great. Pick your own ramen ingredients. Food comes out piping hot, almost boiling. There is a condiment bar, and you can make your own recipe. Order ahead unless you get an hour and a half for lunch. You will be standing waiting for 30+ minutes to get your food. A little odd considering its instant or already cooked noodles. Overall I definitely like this place but it's not exactly conducive to having for lunch.

Food (4/5): We got the dry hotpot stir fry with sliced beef, fish, and a variety of vegetables and meatballs. The food was decent but they didn't actually mix the sauce of the savory dry mix but it ended up being quite good still. Service (4/5): You mostly just self serve by selecting your own ingredients and then they will stir fry it for you. Ambiance (5/5): It's inside a brightly lot and upscale nice mall. There are plenty of seats in the food court and overall looks quite nice

4 words to describe my experience: I WILL BE BACK! I loved the concept of building my own hotpot bowl from scratch as someone with particular taste. They had a variety of meat, noodles, veggies, etc to choose from. We both chose the beef bone broth after getting all the ingredients together. The bowls came out piping hot, and were super delicious and flavorful. We didn't even need to add any extra sauces, but they had them on the side just in case. Pro tip: get the medium if you want spice but still want to enjoy your food. The price is based on how much you put in the bowl. I had just enough food, but my friend got a bit extra because she was trying new things. Now I know exactly what I want in my bowl for my next visit too. 1000/10 for my first hotpot experience!

My Go-To Malatang Spot! They have a great selection of fresh, high-quality ingredients - you handpick everything, and pricing is by weight (which is why I shake off all the water like crazy lol). - - - - - - - - Malatang $14.99/LB ~ Beef bone broth 招牌牛骨湯 ~ My fav broth! Always medium or extra spicy, depending on my mood. Super flavourful & delicious when all the ingredients soak up the broth! Pair it with Nissin Ramen for the best experience! ~ Sweet & sour tomato 酸甜番茄湯 ~ Tangy, sweet, and super satisfying. Love it with udon, but it's a bit oilier than expected. ~ Chicken broth 金牌雞湯 ~ Rich, umami-packed, and slightly herbal. The least oily option, perfect if you want something lighter! ~ Spicy mix (dry pot) 麻辣拌 ~ Tastes great, but way creamier than I expected. It's drenched in sesame sauce, so if you love a nutty, creamy flavour, this is for you! My 6 Must-Order:1/ Crispy Grass Carp (脆鯇魚)2/ Crispy Pork (小酥肉)3/ Sliced Beef (肥牛)4/ Beef Tripe (牛柏葉)5/ Seaweed Knot (海帶結)6/ Black Fish Fillet (魚柳), Sub with Marinated Garlic Beef (蒜香牛) if unavailable Why 6? Because if you order takeout on UberEats/DoorDash, you pick 6 ingredients by default! I've ordered several times from the Jersey City location, and they never skimp on portions! - - - - - - - - - Will I be back? Yes! As a malatang lover, and with a shop so close to home, I've already been back multiple times.

(Overall: A) - Self-serve hot pot to go at $16/lb is a welcome addition to Jersey Copious Asian vegetable options and protein cuts to offer. The self serve sauce bar is a great opportunity for flavor development, which I feel the soup already does a good job with. Their packaging is very secure as well, making this a very safe takeout option. Highly recommend! Food: +1 Presentation: +1 Price: E Overall: 5 stars Insta/Yelp/Beli/TikTok: @amei_eats

1.5 Lb. Beef Bone Broth Base

We recently stumbled upon this newly opened Ramen place in our neighbourhood and handpicked all the veggies and meat we wanted with our noodles. The portion size was good and the soup and condiments were delicious. We will definitely be visiting soon. The hotpot however has very limited base options for vegans and vegetarians.

It's a convenient spot for a mala bowl and it's open surprisingly late. We stopped by past 9pm when the actual mall is closed but the food court was still open. You can pick your own ingredients and soup base. They'll cook it and a beeper will notify when it's ready. I recommend getting the fattier beef options so it isn't as tough. They charge by weight, so tofu and veggies will be expensive. There's a lot of sauces and dipping toppings on the side to add on. I got sukiyaki broth which is very umami and basically didn't really need a side sauce, but you can still dip the meat in chili oil, garlic and scallions.

If you are vegan/vegetarian or have any food allergies I would highly recommend to avoid this place at all cost. My "vegan" ramen included various slices of meats. That was neither a part of the item nor a selection. I was mentioned repeatedly that this was a food allergy. Spent the evening in the bathroom. Order elsewhere, it's not worth risking your wellbeing..

A new hot pot spot that had opened up a couple of days ago. It is by weight for 14.99lb. You can pick out different meats, vegetables, fish balls, fish cakes, tofu mushrooms and noodles. They will weigh it ans ask you what soup base so you want. I picked the beef bone medium spice. It was delicious and very filling. I will definitly come back and try their other soups.

In fact, it's very good--an authentic pan-Chinese spot happily frequented by the rich Chinese denizens of Jersey City. Here's what you should get: - Silky Tofu w. Century Egg: If you like your garlicky chili oil loaded with umami as only the Chinese can do, you'll love this. Think cold mapo tofu with tons of chewy century egg slices - Stir Fried Parsley Beef: A pretty decent noodle soup, though the beef was a bit too chewy and lacked the promised parsley from the menu. However, the broth was complex and satisfying - Peppercorn Beef: A lovely spicy dish if you want a dry noodle dish While English is spoken by the staff, you'll definitely endear yourself and get some extra small favors if you can speak Mandarin (e.g. getting extra bowls and plates for sharing, which aren't provided). With prices in the teens, this is probably the cheapest flavorful meal you'll find in the heart of Grove St. That is, until the newest outpost of Zhangliang around the corner figures out its capacity issues.

For their…read moredinner menu, you can do AYCE hotpot and bbq for ~$43pp, which also includes appetizers and some drinks. For alcoholic drinks, such as soju and beer, you can add ~$7pp for AYCD. The tables are spacious and the place is bright. We ordered a variety of meats and veggies for hotpot and bbq and it was alright. The hot pot is definitely better than the bbq as the meat quality was too fatty for bbq. Moreover, because they don't change the grills, the oils from the meat just pool onto the grill and the meats get really oily to eat after a while. We also got the fried chicken, spring rolls, and fried buns apps and I thought that the chicken and buns were good but the spring rolls were okay. The only thing I would have to say is that the service isn't the best. Although they are kind, half of the things we ordered never arrived or we had to constantly ask them to bring it out/check on our order.

I loved this place!…read more I came here on a late Friday night, probably around 8pm and was glad that they were still opened. We were greeted very welcomely and was seated right away. It was unusually cold in NY during this time (5/23/25) and initially we were seated by the door where we would catch the cold draft every time the door opened. We asked if we can switch seats and the waiter was more than helpful. I feel bad for not getting his name, because he was very helpful throughout the entire dinner service, but, I've been walking around in the cold all day and the only thing that was on my mind at that time, was a nice warm meal. I've done a lot of Chinese hotpots and this was the first that we get the soup and grill without a price difference. The selections were typical, some may say less than other places, but, I felt that less was better. When there is too much to chose from, you don't know what to pick or pick too much. The one thing that I did missed was fresh tofu. They had a variety of tofu but not fresh tofu. But, I probably shouldn't waste my stomach space on tofu for and AYCE, anyway, lol! We opt for an non-spicy and a spicy soup base. If you are like me and do not like mala (numbing spice), I would not recommend getting a spicy soup base. Even my cousin, that does like mala, said it was a little overbearing after a while. If you do love spicy, like me, they have a condiment station to make your own sauce and have several chili options to chose from that is not numbing spice. For the price and selections, I feel that it was very satisfying. I really enjoyed their homemade peach and kumquat lemon tea; but, order fast because once it's gone, you are out of luck! The place was clean and the noise level was average. I think this is the best Chinese hotpot place that I have experienced in USA and would definitely go back!

We had no problem with that and was seated right away. The servers came over immediately and asked us what we wanted to order for food and we put in a good sized list. The food came so quickly after ordering, except for the meat (beef and pork). We decided to give it some time because this has happened in the past, but by 10:30, we were starting to get full and we wanted to ask the waitress. She said she would ask and walked away. Then a waiter came by at 10:40 explaining last call and asked what we wanted to order and I repeated that we still have not gotten our meat and we might as well order more meat. He uses his headset to try and find out what's happening and I see him come out with trays of meat and he brings them to other tables, including tables that arrived after us and doesn't bring us anything. At this point, a third waitress asked if we want last call and we reiterate to her that we still have not gotten our meat yet other tables had. Finally, the last waitress was able to bring us our meat and even some additional dishes that we didn't order. We have had something similar happen in the past where they bring the meat last, maybe because it's the most expensive and they hope we get full off everything else and order less meat? (This is my personal opinion but when it happens more than once, I start to speculate) This experience was heightened by the timing of closing but was, regardless, extremely frustrating. The last waitress was extremely kind and attentive afterwards, to likely diffuse the situation.
