I have too many wonderful things to say about Laurena (and Sheri--see the third…read moreparagraph), so I think a little background story is in order, so you can truly get a full picture of how amazing she is and why I 100% recommend that you trust her with all of your bridal hair/makeup needs! My husband and I were married last Friday 10/26/18 (woo hoo!) and several months prior to the wedding, I had booked with a different hair/makeup vendor. I grew up in Hawai'i, but now live in California so I could not plan a hair/makeup trial in advance. Four days before our wedding, I had my hair/makeup trial and the results unfortunately were lackluster. Even my family and friends urged me to cancel services and agreed that I would be better off doing my hair and makeup myself. You can imagine how stressed out I quickly became! Thankfully, this makeup/hair vendor was very gracious and understanding in allowing me to cancel with such short notice however, my next big worry was how would I do my own makeup/hair (I am terrible at this!) and would it be possible to find someone with only FOUR days until the BIG day?! With all the other details of the wedding I still had to do, this was the last thing I wanted to have to worry about... The next day, after several unsuccessful attempts at finding hair/makeup artists available, I drove to Nordstrom at Ala Moana and walked into the makeup section, head down and spirits low, and hoping to find someone to help me find makeup that I could use to do it myself =/ Then I met SHERI who instantly brightened my day with her infectious personality and sincere interest in helping me any way that she could! I told her the situation, showed her pictures of my bridal trial, and not only did she make wonderful recommendations for makeup, she immediately called LAURENA, told her the situation, and provided me Laurena's website/contact information. After leaving Nordstrom, I quickly filled out Laurena's questionnaire on her website (it reviews types of services requested, you can even upload pictures of your desired hair/makeup looks). She responded to my questions within minutes and even requested pictures of my bridal trial so that she knew what to avoid, which I greatly appreciated. She reviewed my questionnaire instantly and to my surprise she was available!!! She literally sent me an invoice and contract that same day! I had to make a few changes to the services (as a few bridesmaids made changes to the type of service they wanted) and she quickly sent over the updated versions within minutes. With Laurena's user friendly website, her quick and friendly responses to my questions, and taking the time to review pictures of what I did and did NOT want, I was reassured instantly that I would be taken care of throughout the booking process and on the BIG DAY! A HUGE weight was lifted off my shoulders because from this moment-- all of my worries just melted away. Friday, our wedding day came in the blink of an eye and Laurena showed up to the estate in Hauula (which is far and she had no problem traveling here!) with to my surprise, SHERI!! They quickly came inside and got to work on our makeup and hair. What I loved about Laurena is that she made professional recommendations on the pictures of possible bridal looks I sent to her (I am clueless when it comes to makeup!). She pointed out that the picture I sent was beautiful but the eye shadow was a bit too simple and she wanted to make sure my makeup was still natural but had that WOW 'I'm a bride!' factor. Without hesitation I said yes to all of the above and the result -STUNNING makeup and hair that I have always pictured having on my wedding day and MORE. This is not an exaggeration, once I have pictures from my friends and photographer I will upload them asap! The way she did my makeup, she brought out my features in the most beautiful way and she curled my hair in a way that had that 'Victoria Secret-esque' voluminous curls I've always wanted. I also wanted the left side of my hair above my ear pinned and detailed with white orchids and she did this exactly how I wanted. Sheri also did an absolutely amazing job on my bridesmaids! They also were so in love with how she did their makeup and hair. Phew! That was long! But a short review would not have done Laurena justice. All in all, she was extremely friendly, professional, attentive, responsive to my questions, and so incredibly talented. I don't wear makeup or do my hair often but wanted to make sure that on my Wedding day everything would be flawless, and I can confidently say that her services exceeded my expectations in every way possible. Our prayers were answered when we found May. This review is a bit long because it isn't fair to only describe her as amazing, because she is so much more! First off, May is so incredibly talented as a makeup artist. She has artistic vision and works to emphasize your features versus a "copy & paste" makeup style. Secondly, she is also very organized and professional from communicating before the wedding, to the makeup trial, to the day of the wedding making it easy to discuss and confirm with her. To start off, we are 2 brides, so that is double the makeup! My wife and I typically don't wear a lot of makeup so it was difficult for us to voice what we wanted and know what would look good on us. We decided to include a makeup trial which I HIGHLY recommend all brides do. My wife showed May some photos of the makeup look and up-do hairstyles she liked. May was so talented and gave my wife exactly the look she asked for. However, this is why the makeup trial is important because, my wife ended up realizing that she actually want a more natural look because it would make her feel more comfortable and that she actually would prefer her hair down. May was so understanding and had suggestions on how she can create that as she knew exactly what my wife wanted! With May's expertise, my wife felt so comfortable and beautiful with her hair and makeup on our wedding day. As for me, I shared a few images with May and described to her the feel I wanted to evoke with my hair and makeup. I mainly spoke about the facial features that I wished to emphasize and those I wished to minimize and trusted May to create the final vision. She did just that! May gave me the fresh faced look and styled my hair to matched the vision I had but didn't know how to voice entirely. May also went the extra mile for us to make our wedding perfect. On the day of our wedding, I suddenly asked if she could support us on-site at the wedding ceremony and for photos afterwards. This was because we did a small photo shoot on the day of our makeup trial, at the wedding location, the wind was insane and our hair was in our faces for all the photos. The weather also looked to be about the same on our wedding day, so for our wedding, we didn't want the same thing to happen, and I presented May with this last minute request. When I tell you she is kind and caring, I can't emphasize that enough. She told me that she had something already scheduled but she understood why and that she will try. She shifted her personal schedule around asking for her friend to help to take care of her personal errands, to be able to accompanying us to the wedding ceremony and photoshoot afterwards. I almost felt undeserving because this was essentially a stranger we met that week, but she has such a big and kind heart and was so caring that she was willing to go above and beyond to make us look and feel good on our wedding day. During the ceremony she was always watching to make sure both my wife and I looked our best. I really can't express or thank her enough for her talent, time, and kindness. What appealed to me and my matron of honor (who was also scouting out vendors for me!) was that Dorys made her subjects look pretty yet natural. Plus, I was intrigued with the whole "airbrush" deal. I had no idea you could airbrush people in addition to pictures! I am glad that I agreed to do a run through session with Dorys a couple of days before the wedding. Per her request, I gave her some pictures of hair and make up styles that I liked and she did a great job replicating the styles on me! What I liked about Dorys and doing the run through was that she wanted me to be totally comfortable with how I looked. When I told her I wasn't too sure about the lipstick color, she changed it to a more berry shade and I was super happy! (Little things like that matter, you know?) I loved how the airbrushing turned out, how she did my eyes (I've got the weird predicament of having eyelids but very Asian slanted-eyes so a lot of artists don't really know what to do with me.) Something important to mention - after I left my run through my appointment, my fiance and I went to check in to the hotel where we would be married. I noticed that the curls in my hair fell flat right away. I was very worried that this would happen the day of my wedding. My hair is fickle and will sometimes refuse to hold a curl for the life of me. I emailed Dorys to let her know what happened and that I felt more comfortable curling my own hair and then have her style it. Dorys' assistant emailed me back that it wouldn't be a problem. The day of the wedding, Dorys was on point. While she did arrive 15 minutes late (which can feel like an hour for an anxious bride!) she quickly did my Maid of Honor's hair and then went to work on me. I had curled my hair before she came but left the styling to her. Ever the professional, she told me she understoond my worries about the curls not holding with the hairspray she used the other day. But looking at me, all she saw were flyaways. Would I reconsider using hairspray if it was aerosol? I told her that if she thought it was best, go for it. So she did and my curls lasted the entire time!!! Dorys also finished a little bit early so there was plenty of cushion time to go from the room to the ceremony location for pre-wedding pictures. I am so glad that I decided to splurge on having someone else do my hair and make up because it was something I didn't have to worry about. And because I did have a run through with Dorys, I knew exactly what she was planning to do and how it would turn out. I highly recommend Dorys to anyone that wants to have a professional take care of her hair and make up on her big day. Not only do you not have to worry about how you look but you will also feel really good about how you look for your pictures! PS: I advise you to use your own lipstick for touch ups during your wedding day. The gloss Dorys gives is great but doesn't add as much color as your trusty lipstick. Stayed on perfectly and my skin looked flawless. I wasn't uber impressed by my eyelashes. I actually brought my own with me (which I was charged extra for...understandable since they had their own there but theirs weren't very good). When I got a chance to look at them when we were done with our one and a half worth of wedding & photosession, one eyelash was so loose it was coming off in the inner corner. I think they could have been WAY closer to the lash line. Makeup-wise, other than the unimpressive lash job was great! After the run-through session I talked to her about what I would change, emphasize a little more, etc. She listened. Did a beautiful eyemakeup job and the airbrushing really did look incredible. My hair turned out GORGEOUS. In fact, it was so relieved I went to her. I had always envisioned my hair would be a few inches longer when I got married but the wedding came up quickly and my hair wasn't there. When I mentioned this to Dorys, she offered extensions! I had my hair done the week before the wedding and met up with her to match the extensions. I was a little nervous about the extensions since we didn't do the run-through with them but she matched them perfectly and my hair ended up looking just like I'd imagined- length and all. And I got to keep them to use afterwards! I had to buy toupee clips to sew on to reuse them but I honestly still use them to this day (they're real hair and easy to clip in). Well worth the money to have someone match them up for me. Dorys was really awesome and very professional. Since we just had a little wedding on the beach nearby, Dorys was nice enough to let the videographer come in and spend time shooting me during (getting in her way a little bit) as well as letting us hang out a little bit afterwards on a Sunday afternoon to let us get some great shots. Her studio is really cute and airy and looked great on camera. Very laid back. I would definitely recommend Dorys! Also perfect for getting married on Waialae beach (in front of Kahala hotel)- super close by. Only took about 5 min to get there. :)
