When a bride wants to cancel her hair and makeup four days before the wedding, you know that's not good. Here is my honest review of Jina, and I tried to be as objective and factual as possible. I felt like leaving a public review is necessary for future clients to make informed choices and for Jina to change the trajectory of her future actions as she promised she would to me. First, the good things. As someone who has gotten makeup from 3 different Korean artists specializing in wedding makeup in LA, Jina's makeup skills are good. She spent a lot of time during the makeup trial, so I can say that she is pretty thorough. I had specific feedback for her after the trial, which she was accepting of, and I think my actual wedding day makeup would've been good. I have no complaints about her skills. Reasons why I couldn't work with her anymore: #1 Biggest reason: Honesty issues. Mainly overcharging and changing the contract without consent. My first issue arose after the makeup trial. I already made a $100 deposit before the trial, which she said I would get back. After the trial, I signed the full wedding contract and paid for the requested wedding deposit as well as for the makeup trial. I asked if this price already accounts for the $100 deposit, to which she replied as, yes. I trusted her and signed the contract. When I analyzed the contract again, I realized that she had not accounted for the deposit. I contacted her, thinking it was just a simple mistake, to which she replied she thought I knew and gave her the extra $100 as a gratuity, and refused to give my deposit back. I still couldn't fully understand why she would think my $100 deposit became her tip, but since I already signed my contract, I just let it slip. Of note, right after I signed, she divided the contract into two pieces and took the top part of the contract which has all the cost breakdown and gave me the bottom slip, which only has the total amount. I had to stop her and ask if I could take a picture of the full contract. ***All brides, please ask to take a picture of the FULL original contract.*** As my wedding date got nearer, I requested for some adjustments: I added one more person (hair only, no makeup), and I moved, so I told her she may need to recalculate travel fee (my new house was 5 miles away). I made those requests on 3/5. She did not reply with the final and updated quote until 3/11, 5 days before my wedding. My original remaining balance was $1,095.50, and I was estimating my new balance to be around $1,258.50 based on a pricing menu I had received previously. However, she quoted me $1,780.50 with a photo of the original contract erased and altered with white-out. Confused about the $500 upcharge, I asked for an explanation. She did not respond, so after 24 hours, I sent her a message which expressed my concerns about her professionalism and breach of contract as she unilaterally altered a contract without my consent. She acknowledged that it was her fault for using white-out to alter a binding document without thoroughly explaining first. Jina, I hope you are no longer doing this for your future clients. Then, she offered explanations; the upcharge was due to early bird start time (which, in the original contract, she did not charge me for, and I interpreted it as the actual makeup starting time. She interpreted it as when she started travelling. I think there are some grounds for dispute here). The other upcharge was due to travel fee. She said that her formula for calculating is Travel fee= $150 + 5* distance, which was very different from the formula she put down on my original contract: Travel fee= $150+ 2.5* distance. She had upcharged me by double the amount (it is interesting there are others saying the same thing on other Yelp reviews. Makes me think this is not her first time). Only after I pulled out the picture of the original contract, she admitted to her faults, offered a full refund, and extended her apologies, which is the only reason she's not getting a 1-star rating. This is not about the money, this is about trust and professionalism. I paid a different HMUA more for my actual wedding. I couldn't stand the unfair treatment that I received, and I honestly was not going to be happy no matter how beautiful the makeup turned out to be if I got it from Jina. I hope this review helps considering clients. I am not saying you shouldn't get it from her, just be very careful and take pictures of the full contract and solidify prices before you pay for anything. And Jina, I hope this review serves as a reminder of your shortcomings and how your actions can impact someone's once-in-a-life event. read more

My review for Jina still holds strong, but I just wanted to thank her again for her hard work and share a few words on how great she is. As I mentioned before, Jina is hands down the best makeup artist in LA. I've done a lot of research and have experience with others, but was not able to find someone I was satisfied with. I'm pretty picky in terms of what I like and Jina is always very patient with me. If you bring a picture of your outfit, she's actually willing to look at it to choose the best look for you!! I also need to mention I have really really oily, acne prone skin. When Jina does my makeup, I know it'll last throughout the day without me having to worry about blotting every 10 seconds or running to the bathroom for a touch up. My fiancee got her wedding trial makeup & hair done at this place. Jina's instagram handle is @makeup_by_jina. While her beautician work was okay, her customer service lacks professionalism and communication skills. By the way, the hair was done by someone else (Jaynus Hair @jaynus_official). Jina doesn't respond quickly (our mode of communication was via text), which can be frustrating when you are trying to figure out all your wedding vendors ASAP. She didn't tell us where to go for the trial, until we had to ask the day of, which is unprofessional. We decided not to go with her because she never responded to the follow-up questions we had for her after she sent us the draft of the initial contract. Also, after the trial, she made her fees higher than what was initially quoted, and didn't offer explanation about that when asked via text.
